Happy Mothers Day to all mothers

Happy Mothers Day from everyone here at the Bulletin to all our mothers.

We hope that honouring this one day will turn out to be a 365 day affair and you will be honoured every day for the rest of the year. Mothers are very special people so let us take a moment to thank the mothers in our lives for what they have done for their children.

Here is a little history on Mothers Day. Read the article on the History page HERE.

Mother’s Day is a holiday honouring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. In the United States, Mother’s Day 2021 will occur on Sunday, May 9. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards and other gifts.

History of Mother’s Day

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”

Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service.

Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.

Did you know? More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent.

Ann Reeves Jarvis and Julia Ward Howe

The origins of Mother’s Day as celebrated in the United States date back to the 19th century. In the years before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children.

These clubs later became a unifying force in a region of the country still divided over the Civil War. In 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation.

Another precursor to Mother’s Day came from the abolitionist and suffragette Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. In 1873 Howe campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be celebrated every June 2.

Other early Mother’s Day pioneers include Juliet Calhoun Blakely, a temperance activist who inspired a local Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the 1870s. The duo of Mary Towles Sasseen and Frank Hering, meanwhile, both worked to organize a Mothers’ Day in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some have even called Hering “the father of Mothers’ Day.”

Anna Jarvis Turns Mother’s Day Into a National Holiday

The official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900s due to Anna Jarvis’s efforts, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived Mother’s Day to honour the sacrifices mothers made for their children.

After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, in May 1908 she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same day also saw thousands of people attend a Mother’s Day event at one of Wanamaker’s retail stores in Philadelphia.

Following the success of her first Mother’s Day, Jarvis—who remained unmarried and childless her whole life—resolved to see her holiday added to the national calendar. Arguing that American holidays were biased toward male achievements, she started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and prominent politicians urging the adoption of a special day honouring motherhood.

By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Jarvis Decries Commercialized Mother’s Day

Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of Mother’s Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. Her version of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge and visiting one’s mother or attending church services. But once Mother’s Day became a national holiday, it was not long before florists, card companies and other merchants capitalized on its popularity.

While Jarvis had initially worked with the floral industry to help raise Mother’s Day’s profile, by 1920 she had become disgusted with how the holiday had been commercialized. She outwardly denounced the transformation and urged people to stop buying Mother’s Day flowers, cards and candies.

Jarvis eventually resorted to an open campaign against Mother’s Day profiteers, speaking out against confectioners, florists and even charities. She also launched countless lawsuits against groups that had used the name “Mother’s Day,” eventually spending most of her personal wealth on legal fees. By the time of her death in 1948 Jarvis had disowned the holiday altogether, and even actively lobbied the government to see it removed from the American calendar.

Mother’s Day Around the World

While versions of Mother’s Day are celebrated worldwide, traditions vary depending on the country. In Thailand, for example, Mother’s Day is always celebrated in August on the birthday of the current queen, Sirikit.

Another alternate observance of Mother’s Day can be found in Ethiopia, where families gather each fall to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, a multi-day celebration honouring motherhood.

In the United States, Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated by presenting mothers and other women with gifts and flowers, and it has become one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending. Families also celebrate by giving mothers a day off from activities like cooking or other household chores.

At times, Mother’s Day has also been a date for launching political or feminist causes. In 1968 Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King, Jr., used Mother’s Day to host a march in support of underprivileged women and children. In the 1970s women’s groups also used the holiday as a time to highlight the need for equal rights and access to childcare.

Kodenaam Vietnam. Dit was die groot ene.

Cassinga was per ongeluk gekry.

Die operasie se kodenaam was ops. Bruilof.

Toe word ops bruilof gepostpone, daar was n “security leak”. Die spioen Dieter Gerhardt was die oorsaak. – Ops Bruilof is gekanseleer.

  • Andries “Skillie” Human
  • Eddie Blackhouse
  • Mark Kaplan
  • JC de Waal

We will remember them

Thank you to Gerhard Claassens for the article

So is die Lewe: Blikskudder

So staan jy by ‘n besige robot in Kaapstad. No food, no job, children to feed. Please help. God bless.”

Jy is, sagkens gestel, skepties.

Gert Vlok Nel – Moenie my hier vergeet nie, Dixie

Kom wys my!!

so is die lewe

Jy is ‘n staatspasiënt.  Waar jy dieselfde prosesse deurgaan.

Want hy was uitstekend in sy werk.

Lees ook: So is die Lewe: Ek rus my saak, Edelagbare.

Hierdie plasing ruk my. “Ek is werkloos weens omstandighede”, beteken skielik vir my iets heel anders. Gestremdheid is ‘n baie wye term.

Gee my, soos vir Simson, net èèn keer weer my krag terug.

En ek besluit:  Van nou af help ek, so beperk as wat my vermoë is.

Police are looking for truck arsonists

POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR SUSPECTS WHO SET TRUCK ALIGHT AS WELL AS ROBBED THE KEYS OF TWO OTHER TRUCKS

NELSPRUIT – Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for suspects who set a truck alight, shot and wounded the driver as well as robbed the keys of two trucks, in three separate incidents which occurred yesterday, 04 May 2021, near Bethal.

In the first incident, the driver reported to police that he was driving on the road between Standerton and Morgenzon when he decided to park the truck on the side of the road to get some rest. Moments later he heard a noise outside, looked through the window and saw a man pouring petrol over the truck.

Sasol celebrates International Firefighters Day

Today is International Firefighters Day.

Sasol Fire department invited Langamed as well as Working on Fire to celebrate the day with them.

This celebration took the form of a small march from Charlie One (Sasol’s main outside gate) to the Fire station inside the plant.

Celebrating Firefighters Day

International Firefighters’ Day is observed each year on 4th May. On this date we remember the past firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all. At the same time, we can show our support and appreciation to the firefighters worldwide who continue to protect us so well throughout the year.

The Website “firefightersday.org” writes the following:

Firefighters dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property. Sometimes that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others it is many selfless years working in the industry. In all cases it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life.

International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time where the world’s community can recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.

Andre Labuschagne, Firefighter at Sasol Fire, said to the Bulletin “we are doing this in recognition of our fallen brothers and sisters right across the world.”

Here is a little history about International Firefighter’s Day as taken from the Firefightersday website:

Read more about the Firefightersday HERE

International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4. It was instituted after a proposal was emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999, due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire at Linton in Victoria, Australia.

When

May 4th (St Florian’s Day). May 4 is the feast day of St Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. St Florian was the first known commander of one firefighting squad in the Roman Empire. He lost his life, as well as those of his colleagues, for protecting the same humane ideas which firefighters all over the world share even today.

Firefighters in most European countries celebrate their day on 4th of May as a ‘Day of Fire Service’ as well as St Florian’s Day. This date is also known as St Florian’s Day worldwide and has been tradition for more than 150 years in Europe.

It is a day for emergency services to run events such as: memorial services; fetes, open days and fundraisers for relevant campaigns; long service and other presentations; and a media campaign to focus attention on the role, activities and key messages of firefighters and fire organisations.

For the community to:

  • show support for all firefighters worldwide.
  • recognise their level of commitment and dedication.
  • remember those lost or injured in the line of duty.
  • say “Thank you”.
  • and, as a mark of respect.

Symbol

A piece of red and a piece of blue ribbon pinned together at the top (blue over red). The combination of the two ribbons (5cm long x 1cm wide) pinned together should form an internationally common recognised symbol when worn. The IFFD ribbons are linked to colours symbolic of the main elements firefighters work with – red for fire and blue for water. These colours also are internationally recognised as representing emergency service.

Ribbons can be worn on uniforms and lapels on May 4, on the Sound Off and to mark respect for fallen firefighters. The ribbons could also be used to decorate trees, car antennas, letterboxes and other display areas by the community to show their support for IFFD and firefighters.

Sound Off

Often communities remember human sacrifice through observing a minute’s silence. For International Firefighters’ Day this is recognised in the form of a “Sound Off” – to reflect on the commitment and sacrifices of firefighters’ worldwide in a truly poignant manner for emergency service workers. The Sound Off is held annually on the first Sunday of every May for firefighters to stop and remember our fallen and past members in an international show of support.

Opening false cases can land you in hot water.

THE PUBLIC URGED TO REFRAIN FROM OPENING FALSE CASES

NELSPRUIT – Police management in Mpumalanga has sent a stern warning to members of the public not to open false cases as such acts that can land them in prison. The warning comes in the wake of the arrest and court appearance of Promise Lawrence Mnguni, aged 29 who intentionally fabricated a robbery case on 16 April 2021.

According to the report, Mnguni is said to have opened a house robbery case. He then told police that on the day in question, he heard a strange noise in the yard of his employer’s house, a place where he also resides. According to him, his employer was not at home at the time of the said incident. He then further informed police that he went to investigate and when he drew near the door, he saw seven armed men whose faces were covered. They (suspects) then instructed him to go back to the house, where he was told to open the doors of all the rooms.

Mnguni also told police when he reported the matter that the suspects took three car keys, three television sets, two cars, a black Mercedes Benz A 250 with registration number FP 32 YR GP and a black Polo with registration number JXZ 994 MP to an estimated value of almost R 300 000.

A robbery case was opened and police began with their investigation with anticipation to bring those responsible to book. On 23 April 2021, the investigation team went to Mnguni for further probe. The astute members noticed some inconsistencies in that some of the information that he initially mentioned in his statement, did not tally with the one he gave them when they interviewed him. Mnguni is said to have indicated at first that there were seven suspects who attacked him but later during the interview, he mentioned only four suspects.

Police then told him about this discrepancy, he then admitted that the robbery was staged. He further informed police that all the things he earlier told police during the opening of the case were fabricated to look real, meanwhile, it was untrue. Police then informed him that his actions amount to a criminal offence hence his arrest and a charge of perjury laid against him.

Mnguni has already appeared before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court for having made up a story that did not exist. His first court appearance was on Monday, 26 April 2021, where he was remanded in custody and the matter was postponed to 10 June 2021, for further investigation.

The stolen items have not been found as yet however, the investigation thereof is underway.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Major General Thulani Phahla has further conscientize the community that opening false cases have a huge negative impact on the fight against crime. ” When someone falsely opens a case, resources that were supposed to have been used in areas where they were needed most are then wasted. Other criminal activities can occur in other areas whilst manpower is misdirected by those who act irresponsibly,” said General Phahla.
