SAVF Silverjare reports favourably at AGM

The SAVF Silverjare old aged home in Bethal held its AGM on Friday 23 September 2021.

The Annual General Meeting was well organised and very informative. The Bulletin received a folder with all the necessary items neatly presented. Thank you to the organisers.

The meeting was opened in the usual manner with Ds Evert Bergh opening with prayer and a few words.

Ranelda Bergh addressed the group, speaking about “forgetting”. In a speech that had the occasional humour popping up, we were reminded that we all forget. When older people forget it is not because they are dumb or stupid, it is because… well… they forget!

She said that her 81-year-old mother always jokes “How do old people keep fit? They keep looking for their things,”

SAVF Silverjare
Ranelda Bergh addressed the group, speaking about forgetting.

“We all live with the frustration of forgetting,” said Ranelda, “I often walk to my room only to forget why. I then have to return to where I started just to remember.”

“What happens to our lives and those close to us when the Forgetting becomes strange?” she continued, “What happens if the Forgetting becomes a stumbling block, changing your quality of life?”

“How do you feel when the one that knows you the best in the whole world can not remember your name and face? What happens when your mother can recognise your picture as a child but cannot recognise you when you are seated in front of her?”

Sister Christa Botha spoke about Dementia, Alzheimer’s and related illnesses.

Sister Christa Botha spoke about Dementia, Alzheimer’s and related illnesses.

It is a sad reality of life that such illnesses affect some people as they grow older. It is not an illness that is easily diagnosed in the early stages.

She explained how they treat people with Dementia, Alzheimer’s and related illnesses. She also explained how to keep them occupied and how to help them keep their dignity. “We tend to take things out of their hands if they cannot do it,” Christ explained, “leave them to try and figure it out by themselves. Don’t take it out of their hands. Even if it takes them 10 days to accomplish the task.”

Hennie Jordaan, Chairman of the Service Management, thanked our Heavenly Father for His Kindness, Greatness, Love and Grace.

“Last year I said that I did not want to experience another year such as the past year but we are still gripped in the devastating grip of the Covid pandemic,” said Hennie

“We were very unfortunate to have lost people that have passed in this past year. The passing of residents that were here for several years made the loss so much harder.”

Hennie continued to thank those that contributed to the success of SAVF Silverjare, both the staff and the service management.

Hennie made an appeal to every volunteer to try and recruit at least one more volunteer for the next year.

SAVF Silverjare is a Home for needy, frail, aged persons of all racial groups above 60 years. They also cater for people, over 60, with physical disabilities.

Magriet Scholtz reported on the Home and its finances. “SAVF Silverjare continued, despite the covid restrictions and isolations, to render quality and professional services,” she said.

SAVF Silverjare
Magriet Scholtz addressing the meeting

The staff and volunteers when out of their way to make it possible for families to keep in contact with each other. They used every available method to help families to keep in contact.

The home serves 97 people currently. This includes the day-care patients that are looked after during the day before returning to their families.

It is also clear that the staff are emotionally drained due to several factors that include the loss of residents, colleagues and family.

One of the biggest fears is that the staff would bring COVID into the Home infecting the patients.

One positive from Covid is that more and more families are trying to care for their elderly at home.

Magriet Scholtz explained all the measures that they took to keep the home viable and stable.

“The audited financial statements are available for those that need to have insights into it,” said Magriet, “The contribution, compensation during the lockdown, from the Government was a mere R25000. We are extremely happy about it but it is a drop in the ocean.”

“Fundraising and Donations drop by over R530000 during the reporting period, but we managed to cut our expenses etc to cover the deficit. It took extreme financial control,” concluded Magriet. “I am very pleased to report that we ended the year with a positive financial position.”

A new Service Management Team was elected and it was unanimously decided to keep the same team as the past year.

Playing a round of golf at Graceland means playing on the best greens in Mpumalanga!

The upgraded irrigation system has allowed the fairways and tee-boxes to be in top condition and the greens have been hollow tined to maintain the rhythm of play on the course. The bunkers have been restored to the original Gary Player specification, the rough is being cut regularly and the reeds have been removed from the river. The current cart paths have been upgraded and the practice and chipping areas have been rebuilt to tournament standards.

Flat savannahs and highly challenging… the Gary Player designed 18-hole championship golf course at Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club makes use of natural features as the front and back nines follow paths along opposite sides of a valley. The course features a mixture of significant elevation changes, water hazards, rolling fairways and a strategically placed bunker.

This Gary Player golf course is a typical inland links course with undulating greens and relatively steep, grass-faced bunkers. Two streams twine through seven of the holes and several dams attract a variety of birdlife.

The signature hole is the par 3, 15th, a short but treacherous hole where only a well-placed tee shot will be rewarded. The green is well guarded with a water hazard short and up the right side of the green, while two well-placed bunkers at the back of the green catch any shot that is even a little bit longer. Crenshaw Bentgrass and Kikuyu provide ideal playing surfaces.

Slope Ratings

As of 3 September 2018, Graceland will be implementing a new handicap index system and a new slope rating from the championship tees is as follows:

Men
Slope rating club tees are 135 rating
Slope rating senior tees are 128 rating
Slope rating ladies tees are 123 rating
There are no more ladies and senior tees
Tees are played on yellow, white, blue or red with the exception of ladies.

Ladies
Blue tees 144
Red tees 138

Slope ratings in South Africa
For those who are not familiar with the concept of the Slope rating system, it is a USGA system that changes the ball game with regards to handicaps. A Slope rating determines the difficulty of a course which differentiates courses a lot better and adjusts your handicap according to each course. The higher the rating, the more difficult the course. The minimum or easiest is 55 and the most difficult or highest is 155.

The Graceland Pro Shop offers a wide range of golfing equipment. Between September and April, it is open daily between 07h00 and 18h00 and between May and August it is open daily between 07h30 and 17h00. For more information, please call 017 620 1188.

“Repentance” by Anton Knoetze

Secunda Reformed Church Morning service 26 September 2021

Luke 3:7-18 – King James Version

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

Also read: Secunda Reformed Church morning service 19 September 2021

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

Diesel rebates and social media

0

Diesel rebates and social media: Recent posts to social media started a string of negative comments.

Should there be cash rebates on Diesel sales? Why are some Sasol Filling Stations apparently offering rebates and others are not? What is the Diesel price supposed to be?

A recent post on the Facebook page “Secunda en sy mense praat saam” started a whole debate on the issue of so-called rebates. This Facebook page is managed by The Bulletin.

Here is the post (translated into English):

“This past Monday I filled with DIESEL at a Sasol Filling Station, Pretoria. After I have paid, the petrol attendant says that I should just wait for my refund and walk away. The driver then walked up with cash and placed it in my hand which I was very surprised about. I ask him about it, and he says it is an initiative of Sasol National to repay customers 30 cents per litre and it has been in force since the beginning of the covid pandemic. Have any of you had the same experience?”

This post caused quite a stir in Govan Mbeki with people complaining about never having received any monies as rebates. Some even want to support the Pretoria Filling Station from now on.

Sasol Diesel Rebate

Here are some of the comments from the Facebook post. (Some quotes are translated from Afrikaans)

  • Nope, and I only fill with Sasol.
  • No never received and will not
  • Someone knows something we did not know. But may the owners of Sasol garages who do give it to the people be an example to those who are greedy for money. Bless them.
  • At *Filling Station I know you get money back on your *-card, 15c n liter and I already have over R100 on my card wish the others want to do the same
  • Definitely not, now who takes the money if we do not get it. Someone gets rich.
  • No, the first time I heard about it, I was already rich.
  • I think we should all go to Sasol garage to ask the drivers why we do not get the money. We will have to stand together otherwise we will be laughed off
  • It will also only be on diesel that there is refund, if we are lucky. Petrol’s price has been set and such incentives will never be paid for it, there is legislation against it
  • This is Secunda here you will not find it. May that owner be blessed …
  • I already received few Rand back, because the pumps were not adjusted on a Wednesday morning when the price came down, but only 30c per liter. Aikona !! Sad that our loyalty is not also rewarded
Pretoria Diesel Price.

What is clear is that most people are uninformed about the Diesel price structures and what it is at the various Filling Stations, not only in Secunda but countrywide.

The Bulletin spoke to several people regarding the rebate.

Louisa Van Niekerk, manager at the Sasol Value Filling Station explained that their prices already include all the rebates and discounts that is possible to pass on to the consumers.

The price at the filling station in question is R17,55 and the price at the Sasol Value Filling Station is R16,37/litre (10ppm). This makes the difference a whopping R1,18 cheaper than the Filling Station in Pretoria.

The Diesel in Secunda also varies quite a bit. The Bulletin visited three other brands to verify their prices on Diesel.

This is what we found (brand names are withheld) at two other filling stations

  • Filling Station 1: R17,53
  • Filling Station 2: R16,93

It is clear that the facts were not verified when posting and commenting on the Facebook page.

It is easy to post to Facebook and other social media pages about experiences, but one has to consider all the facts first. What would the effects be of the uninformed posts to social media? What effect would this have on businesses and people’s perception of those businesses?

Please ensure that one has all sides of the story before posting. This applies to fake news as well.

Here are some tips to save fuel:

  • Close the car windows when driving. An open window creates a drag that increases fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent. For a person who spends R100 a week on petrol, a 20 percent saving could mean saving R20 a week, which adds up to R80 a month;
  • Use multigrade oil in your engine because it reduces drag;
  • Service your car regularly;
  • Use a logbook to record your fuel purchases and kilometre travelled to set new economic goals and to spot radical differences in the performance of your vehicle due to mechanical malfunction;
  • Establish lift clubs;
  • Switch to radial-ply tyres because they offer less rolling resistance and longer life than the cross-ply variety;
  • Avoid driving with under-inflated tyres because a tyre pressure that is too low not only increases consumption, but also markedly reduces a tyre’s life;
  • Avoid stop-start driving;
  • Accelerate slowly; and
  • Do not speed, the faster you drive the more petrol you use.

ANIMALS 101 – HUMANE ANIMAL CONTROL

0

ANIMALS 101 – NO ANIMAL SHOULD SUFFER, NO MATTER HOW YOU THINK OF THEM.

Since I have been involved in animal welfare, I can’t even kill an ant without thinking twice. In animal welfare, well at least the majority of us, care about ALL animals. They are sentient beings who can feel pain and suffer and none of them should have to. Today we will focus on rat and mice control and what to do when they become a concern.

When temperatures start to get cooler in winter times, animals will seek shelter in non-ideal locations. We understand that some people don’t want animals like mice, rats, snakes or lizards in their homes, for various reasons, however, please NEVER use sticky traps or rodenticides! They are inhumane and the animal suffers a slow and painful death. Instead use live traps, ultrasonic repellents or unpleasant scents.

We understand that in some cases rat or mouse populations might get out of hand, but then it is important to consult with your local animal welfare or humane societies, SPCA, NSPCA or humane pest control companies. Understanding your options and the level of risk and safety involved with pest control is the first step to finding a rodent control option that is best for your needs, humane and best for the environment at large.

ANIMALS
Source: South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

There is no such thing as “animal-friendly” poison. POISON IS POISON. It is designed to kill! Death by poisoning is arguably one of the cruellest and inhumane ways to kill any animal, whether you think of them as a sentient being or a pest. A poisoning incident is a crime and should always be reported at your local police station and the SPCA should be informed.

Also read: ANIMALS 101 – PETS AS GIFTS

When we talk about pest control you should first ask these questions:

  • Which specie of rat or rodent it is as the approach for control might differ?
  • How many is many?
  • Is it the odd mouse here or there or massive colonies?
  • Are they causing damage or a problem or do you just not like them?
  • Why are they there?
  • What will the impact of removal have on the environment?
  • Does the methods used pose a risk for other animals or kids etc.?

METHODS USED

Methods, where they are killed instantly and humanely, are recommended with large scale rodent problems. Glue traps, blunt force trauma and poison are certainly not the way! The problem with snap traps is, that many choose cheap traps that are not well designed. This leads to suffering. Some choose shooting, but for that, you will need a permit and it may not be in residential areas.

Source: PETA
animals

Rodenticides – A second generation of ultra-potent rodenticides creates a first-class crisis for people, pets, and wildlife. With rodenticides, it is an agonizing death for the victim and when other animals eat these dead rodents they can die too. For a rodent to get a lethal dose from a first-generation rodenticide it has to eat it more than once.

KILLING IS ONLY A SHORT-TERM SOLUTION

Killing rodents can only provide short-term control of populations. As with feral cats, if you remove a mouse/rat colony you will create what is known as a vacuum effect. This means a new colony will move in or the remaining animals will breed to capacity. Feral cats and rodent colonies form around food sources. Keep in mind, the need to control rats is largely the result of a lack of cleanliness in the immediate environment.

Sustainable control can only be achieved by reducing the rodent carrying capacity of the environment and one way is by reducing food and harbourage.

SOME OTHER OPTIONS:

  • Rat-proofing a building is the only sure way to deter rats. Killing them will only cause other rats to move into the newly available spaces.
  • After rat-proofing your building, give the remaining animals a chance at life by live-trapping and releasing them outdoors. There are guidelines for where, how far etc.
  • Using domestic or natural predators. If these predators are brought in you need to do it with environmental expert as it can lead to other problems. Owls and snakes are some of the most common natural predators. Foxes eat rats too.
  • Support Feral/community cat projects where the cats are trapped, neutered and returned. They help a lot with rodents control.
  • If you aren’t a fan of having cats or owls living with you, we recommend pranking the rats. Using cat litter, rubber snakes or owl feathers can work well. Therefore, tricking the rat into thinking that a cat or owl lives on your premises will scare the rat into possibly making a quick exit. Additionally, farmers and homeowners suggest placing tubs of used cat litter near entry points in your home. The smell will deter the rat.
  • Peppermint Oil, Steel Wool, Rodent Repellent sprays, Irish Spring bars cut up, Rolling Log Mouse Traps (no water), Catch & Release Mouse Traps can also be considered.

It doesn’t matter what the problem is, no animal should endure suffering, ever! If you have any “pests” please contact your nearest SPCA to ask what is the best way to address the issue safely!

Next week we will look at choosing toys for your pets.

GoedgeKeur – Is jou skool?

0

Laerskool Goedehoop is GoedgeKeur!

Is u skool GoedgeKeur? Wat is by jou skool GoedgeKeur?

Is my kind veilig by die skool?

Kinders is ouers se kosbaarste besitting.

Watter geleenthede is daar vir my kind?

Goedehoop moedig massa-deelname aan by alle Mini-Sporte soos bv.

Been A & B) verdeel is.

Gaan my kind wegraak in die massas?

37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?

50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
