ANIMALS 101 – FOUND ANIMALS

Animals 101 – What to do if you find a stray animal.

Many animals are roaming the streets and reported as lost!  There are always good Samaritans who take them in and keep them safe. Last week we looked at what to do if your pet is lost and how to prevent it. This week we will look at what can be done if you found an animal.

Before we list the possibilities, I want you to note the following:

  1. Always COMMENT and SHARE the ORIGINAL POST about the animal, not the shared version. If an animal is found the owner should UPDATE the original post.
  2. People are hesitant to take animals to the SPCA and many times, with good reason, however if you do not have an alternative, the animal is probably safer at the SPCA than in the street where they can be stolen or injured.  The SPCA, by law, may not refuse any animal. There is a pound period for a stray animal handed over to the SPCA. This is determined by the municipal bylaws and that SPCA’s policy.  It is usually around 5-14 days.  The SPCA is unlikely to advertise this animal during the pound period, so it is important to visit them and look for yourself, if you lost one or continue to share the “found” post with a note that they are at the SPCA.  After the pound period, the animal becomes the property of the SPCA and they can either euthanize (put to sleep) them or put them up for adoption.  Even though the local SPCA refuse to provide us with the statistics, they euthanize most of the animals brought in. This can easily be in the area of 80%. On a positive note, the SPCA policies usually can and should include that an animal can’t be removed from their premises, unless they are sterilised or microchipped (or collar ID) and pound fees are paid.  Some require up-to-date vaccination too, which is great.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND AN ANIMAL?

• If they are hurt, please take them to the local Vet or SPCA immediately. You can contact the emergency number of the local SPCA.

• Scan for a microchip at the local Vets or SPCA.

• Some Vets may take in stray animals for a day or two.

• If the pet seems recently groomed, contact local groomers to see if they recognize them.

• If there are signs of a recent operations or medical procedures, contact local Vets. This can include healing wounds, stitches, Vet shaved areas etc.

• If you can, take care of the animal (foster) until you find the owner.

• Post on local social media. Once is not enough!

• We do not suggest sharing specific marks or the sex of the pet. Ask the person who claims the pet to provide this info as well as photos for proof. Watch the animals’ reaction when a person claims the pet. There are scammers!  If you are unsure about this, rather contact one of the local animal welfares to assist.

• If you can’t foster, try and find a foster home and after 7 days organise adoption through one of the responsible welfare organisations. We usually refer cats to Feral Watch & TNR or Because Dogs and CO for any other animal.

• Take the animal to the SPCA if you can’t foster or find a foster.  The SPCA does not support fostering.

• If you hit an animal with your car, please do not be a coward and drive away.  Lie if you have to and say you found the animal, instead of leaving them to suffer and die. CALL the SPCA emergency number immediately and keep trying until someone answers.  Otherwise, try a local Vet or one of the other animal welfare organisations. At least they could humanly end the suffering or help save them.

• Please DO NOT REMOVE kittens. You said that mom ran away and left them. No, she is scared of you and will return as soon as you just let them be. If the babies are quiet and content, the mom is around. She might be searching for food or busy moving her litter. Unless they are in immediate danger, including moving cars, dogs, humans to inflict pain, bad weather, etc., DO NOT REMOVE. Contact an organisation for advice first.

NOTE: None of the animal welfare organisations has the resources to drive up and down to pick up strays or foster and therefore needs the community to assist with this.

Thank you to each of the heroes who take in these lost pets!

Sasol Rugby trumps Witbank 27-12

Sasol Rugby club beat Witbank 27-12 at Sasol Club on Saturday

Sasol rugby club beat their opponents in a game that showed the long break due to Covid. The game was marred by numerous unforced errors by both sides, although Sasol dominated the entire game.

The biggest problem plaguing the home team was fitness. It was clear that fitness needs to be worked on drastically and especially in the front eight. Too many errors were made when the heavier players decided to stand in the backline. This caused errors and broke the flow of the game. The flyhalf had to navigate around the group of props and locks to feed his backline on more than one occasion. This caused the team to play backwards before it moved forward. It also allowed the players from Witbank to move up and trap Sasol behind the advantage line. The home players then had to work hard to progress over the advantage line.

The backline showed a lot of promise when they played basic rugby and “let the ball do the work.” There were several brilliant breaks and runs that showed why they have been crowned Mpumalanga champions a few years in a row. Unfortunately, their tackling was rusty and this resulted in Witbank breaking through far too often.

The entire team can work on their commitment to tackling opposing players. At one stage there were three players watching their teammate trying to stop a Witbank player from moving forward, holding for dear life on his jersey.

The tries scored by Sasol were all brilliant tries that showcased Sasol talent. It also showed that if you let the ball “fly” it will prove successful.

Try from a scrum

The scrums did not seem to have any serious problems but the entire front eight should work on their fitness. Locks and props should be at all scrums and rucks when they happen, not when the ball is out and down the line.

A good scrum

The one area that is very worrying is the lineouts. The lineouts improved as the game progressed, but one cannot wait until the second half to start winning one’s own balls. The throw-ins should be on target and the jumpers should ensure that they catch the balls. What is very pleasing though is that as the lineouts improved so did the Sasol dominance in that area. It was not overwhelming, but the home team started to win a few balls that put Witbank on the retreat. Sometimes the good work would be undone by poor handling, and it should be improved, but the rucks around the lineouts showed promise.

Lineouts

The best way to describe the skills level of both teams would be to say that it showed the brake due to Covid.

The team from Sasol showed at times that the team that dominated the Mpumalanga rugby scene is still there, but it needs a lot of polishing. Fortunately, the home team have shown in the past that they can improve and put bad games behind them.

Steyn van den Heever and Jannie van der Merwe were chosen as Man of the Match

Man of the Match

Sasol Rigby has shown in the past that they play with passion. It is this comradery that drew people back to their games and filled the stands.

It is with passion in mind that Sasol Rugby will be closely watched over the next few games. No doubt they will take this game, and win, to build on their future games.

The Bulletin will be there to watch and report.

Try scorers for Sasol :

  • Steyn van den Heever x1
  • Dalton Smit x1
  • Marinus van der Merwe x1
  • Jannie van der Merwe x1
  • Mark Jacobs x1

Steven Jacob succeeded with one conversion.

Unfortunately the 3rd and 2nd teams did not win their games. The 3rd team lost 3-10 and the second team lost 17-29

Congratulations Sasol 1st team on a well deserved win!

It is alleged that on 16 April 2021, a group of armed men stormed the cash truck outside the service station at Kabokweni whilst the security guards were loading cash. FF+ condemns the Mayor’s devious actions

Aranda Nel-Buidendag, FF+ Councillor, condemns the way that the Mayor mislead the Municipal Council

Secunda – 14 May 2021, a very interesting ruling was given in the High Court of Mpumalanga Division, Middelburg where the Judge Mr Brauckmann ruled in favour of Mr Filani Mndebele in the disciplinary case of GMM against the Municipal Manager. On May 16 a ruling was made by Judge Braukman to have Mr Filani Mndebele re-instated in his post.

GMM Municipal Manager Mayor condemns
Felani Mndebele, Municipal Manager of Govan Mbeki Municipality

“The problem lies in the fact that the appeal was already submitted on 29 March at the High Court in Middelburg and without the approval of the council meeting on 30 March 2021.” said FF+ Cllr Aranda Nel-Buidendag, “During the Council meeting of 30 March 2021, a decision was taken to appeal the court ruling which the municipal manager Mr Filani Mndebele was implicated of misconduct in the 106 forensic investigation report.”

The municipal manager Mr Filani Mndebele was suspended in the middle year of 2020 with full pay. The former CFO Mr BB Sithole was also implicated with misconduct in the 106 forensic investigation report. The municipality did the disciplinary proceedings and before Mr BB Sithole could be found guilty of misconduct, he resigned (with immediate effect). The Municipal Manager was forced to seek legal advice and assistance at the disciplinary proceedings.

In December 2020, the High Court Judge ordered that the Municipal Manager should return back to his workplace and the ruling party majority was against it.

Cllr Aranda Nel-Buitendag of the FF Plus feels that the executive mayor Cllr. Nhlakanipho G Zuma misled the council on the 30 March 2021 because they cannot undo what they done on the 29 March2021. “The FF Plus and fellow opposition Party DA said that the MM must return back to work were the EFF sustained and kept quiet,” Aranda said, “the municipality is already in such a financial strain of outstanding debt of 2.7 Billion. The considering of the High Court action not included in the IDP budget for 2021/2022.”

FF+ Councillor Aranda Nel-Buidendag

The FF Plus said that the executive mayor’s big mistake was to appeal to the High Court on 29 March 2021 and not consider the council at all. Aranda Nel-Buitendag of the FF Plus said, “it is a bad thing for GMM to lose the court case and the community will bear the cost of the stupid decision and mistakes of the ruling party that will waste the very last sent of the municipality.”

So is die lewe: Musiekmakers

Joshua Bell and the Washington Post Subway Experiment

so is die lewe
Stradivarius Violin

Jy vra jouself af: Is my lewensmusiek ooit gehoor?

Topol in Fiddler on the roof sing: “ Each one of us is scratching out a simple tune / without making too much noise.”

Daardie handdruk, of drukkie, sê soms meer as duisend woorde.

Soms skreeu iemand se hele wese uit: “Sien my tog raak, hoor my, vat my hand!”. Onuitgesproke versugtinge, goed weggesteek. Toe hierdie lig vir my opgaan, onthou ek vele voorbeelde. Mense wat jy raakloop, wat vir jou sê: “jy het een dag vir my gesê…en dit het vir my so baie beteken.”

Gister het ek ‘n bejaarde egpaar besoek wie se kleindogter in ‘n motorongeluk oorlede is die vorige nag.  Deel van my pligte as tydelike aflospredikant. Dit was my lankterug aflospligte.

ANIMALS 101 – LOST PET GUIDELINES

Animals 101 – Why do pets get out & what to do if they do?

Millions of animals enter shelters every year in mainly three ways:  Surrendered by owners, confiscated legally from owners, or brought in as strays by good samaritans.

These stray animals are the LOST and FOUND ones you regularly see on social media.  There are so many animals in the streets and although there are some exceptions, most of them are shockingly allowed outside by their owners, including cats. We can share horror stories on why this is dangerous and irresponsible and how many never came home. How the one you thought was “streetwise” was hit by a car or the one you say “knows his way home”, stopped returning home.  If you think the streets are unsafe for your child, why would it be safe for your pets?

When your pets roam the streets, they also become a nuisance to others and sadly the cruelty against animals increases because of this e.g. poisoning and shootings. Other dangers include being attacked by animals or humans or stolen for dog fights, re-selling or breeding and more.

WHY DO ANIMALS ENGAGE IN THIS BEHAVIOUR?

  1. TRYING TO GET HOME – Have you recently moved?
  2. YOUR DOG’S HABIT
  3. MATING
  4. LONELINESS & BOREDOM
  5. YOUR DOG IS SCARED & HAD A FRIGHT
  6. SOMETHING EXCITES THEM
  7. IT’S EASY TO GET OUT

Also read: Welcome to Animals 101

The above can be addressed or prevented by:

  • Create a safe, secure and familiar environment.
  • Meet their needs with exercise and enrichment.
  • Spay/neuter your pets.
  • Don’t leave them alone for too long, especially social animals.
  • Some behaviour might require training and patience.
  • Teach them not to go out of the yard without you, even if the gate is open.
  • There are many ways to keep your cats safe in your yard.  This includes PVC roller bars, angled fences, catios and more.

TIP for in case they get lost – make sure you have a good photo of your pet to share when lost.  You can even make a flyer in advance. Microchip them (collar ID too) and register the microchip on more than one database with up-to-date details.

YOU LOST A PET – WHAT TO DO?

  • Act immediately and start searching as soon as you realize your pet is lost.
  • Share on your local social media pages or groups & neighbourhood watch. Include a photo, details, specific identifying marks, the area lost, the date, during which time frame and a contact number.
  • Contact other local welfare organisation.
  • Drive around in your area, put posters up, hand out flyers, search manholes or other hiding spaces.
  • Ask neighbours if you can search on their property.
  • Keep your phone charged.
  • Re-check spots.
  • Contact your local Vets to see if an animal has been brought in hurt or deceased.
  • Don’t give up. Some pets were reunited with owners after months and even years.
  • Vary your search times. Try and call for pets at night as sound travels further. Cats are more active at night, while dogs might be more during the day.
  • Some suggest putting out cats’ litter boxes or pets’ blankets as scent could help them find their home.
  • If your cat is used to being outside or your pet is missing for more days,  expand your search radius.
  • Offer a reward, but keep in mind it does create a future incentive for pet theft.
  • Birds tend to fly when their adrenaline levels are high. They generally fly up to the highest point they can land. Most pet birds today have never fully fledged, so larger parrots require more skill to be able to take off, land, navigate where they want to go, or climb down. You will have to wait until the bird is ready to come down.
  • Phone your local SPCA and send them an email with a picture & detailed description. Remember they have many animals coming in and various volunteers, so it is still best to visit them in person.
  • Continue to follow up with the SPCA and other organisations as well as share post.

NOTE: Always comment on and share the original post from social media as well as UPDATE the post if FOUND.
