Diesel rebates and social media: Recent posts to social media started a string of negative comments.
Should there be cash rebates on Diesel sales? Why are some Sasol Filling Stations apparently offering rebates and others are not? What is the Diesel price supposed to be?
A recent post on the Facebook page “Secunda en sy mense praat saam” started a whole debate on the issue of so-called rebates. This Facebook page is managed by The Bulletin.
Here is the post (translated into English):
“This past Monday I filled with DIESEL at a Sasol Filling Station, Pretoria. After I have paid, the petrol attendant says that I should just wait for my refund and walk away. The driver then walked up with cash and placed it in my hand which I was very surprised about. I ask him about it, and he says it is an initiative of Sasol National to repay customers 30 cents per litre and it has been in force since the beginning of the covid pandemic. Have any of you had the same experience?”
This post caused quite a stir in Govan Mbeki with people complaining about never having received any monies as rebates. Some even want to support the Pretoria Filling Station from now on.
Here are some of the comments from the Facebook post. (Some quotes are translated from Afrikaans)
Nope, and I only fill with Sasol.
No never received and will not
Someone knows something we did not know. But may the owners of Sasol garages who do give it to the people be an example to those who are greedy for money. Bless them.
At *Filling Station I know you get money back on your *-card, 15c n liter and I already have over R100 on my card wish the others want to do the same
Definitely not, now who takes the money if we do not get it. Someone gets rich.
No, the first time I heard about it, I was already rich.
I think we should all go to Sasol garage to ask the drivers why we do not get the money. We will have to stand together otherwise we will be laughed off
It will also only be on diesel that there is refund, if we are lucky. Petrol’s price has been set and such incentives will never be paid for it, there is legislation against it
This is Secunda here you will not find it. May that owner be blessed …
I already received few Rand back, because the pumps were not adjusted on a Wednesday morning when the price came down, but only 30c per liter. Aikona !! Sad that our loyalty is not also rewarded
Pretoria Diesel Price.
What is clear is that most people are uninformed about the Diesel price structures and what it is at the various Filling Stations, not only in Secunda but countrywide.
The Bulletin spoke to several people regarding the rebate.
Louisa Van Niekerk, manager at the Sasol Value Filling Station explained that their prices already include all the rebates and discounts that is possible to pass on to the consumers.
The price at the filling station in question is R17,55 and the price at the Sasol Value Filling Station is R16,37/litre (10ppm). This makes the difference a whopping R1,18 cheaper than the Filling Station in Pretoria.
The Diesel in Secunda also varies quite a bit. The Bulletin visited three other brands to verify their prices on Diesel.
This is what we found (brand names are withheld) at two other filling stations
Filling Station 1: R17,53
Filling Station 2: R16,93
It is clear that the facts were not verified when posting and commenting on the Facebook page.
It is easy to post to Facebook and other social media pages about experiences, but one has to consider all the facts first. What would the effects be of the uninformed posts to social media? What effect would this have on businesses and people’s perception of those businesses?
Please ensure that one has all sides of the story before posting. This applies to fake news as well.
Here are some tips to save fuel:
Close the car windows when driving. An open window creates a drag that increases fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent. For a person who spends R100 a week on petrol, a 20 percent saving could mean saving R20 a week, which adds up to R80 a month;
Use multigrade oil in your engine because it reduces drag;
Service your car regularly;
Use a logbook to record your fuel purchases and kilometre travelled to set new economic goals and to spot radical differences in the performance of your vehicle due to mechanical malfunction;
Establish lift clubs;
Switch to radial-ply tyres because they offer less rolling resistance and longer life than the cross-ply variety;
Avoid driving with under-inflated tyres because a tyre pressure that is too low not only increases consumption, but also markedly reduces a tyre’s life;
Avoid stop-start driving;
Accelerate slowly; and
Do not speed, the faster you drive the more petrol you use.
ANIMALS 101 – NO ANIMAL SHOULD SUFFER, NO MATTER HOW YOU THINK OF THEM.
Since I have been involved in animal welfare, I can’t even kill an ant without thinking twice. In animal welfare, well at least the majority of us, care about ALL animals. They are sentient beings who can feel pain and suffer and none of them should have to. Today we will focus on rat and mice control and what to do when they become a concern.
When temperatures start to get cooler in winter times, animals will seek shelter in non-ideal locations. We understand that some people don’t want animals like mice, rats, snakes or lizards in their homes, for various reasons, however, please NEVER use sticky traps or rodenticides! They are inhumane and the animal suffers a slow and painful death. Instead use live traps, ultrasonic repellents or unpleasant scents.
We understand that in some cases rat or mouse populations might get out of hand, but then it is important to consult with your local animal welfare or humane societies, SPCA, NSPCA or humane pest control companies. Understanding your options and the level of risk and safety involved with pest control is the first step to finding a rodent control option that is best for your needs, humane and best for the environment at large.

There is no such thing as “animal-friendly” poison. POISON IS POISON. It is designed to kill! Death by poisoning is arguably one of the cruellest and inhumane ways to kill any animal, whether you think of them as a sentient being or a pest. A poisoning incident is a crime and should always be reported at your local police station and the SPCA should be informed.
When we talk about pest control you should first ask these questions:
Which specie of rat or rodent it is as the approach for control might differ?
How many is many?
Is it the odd mouse here or there or massive colonies?
Are they causing damage or a problem or do you just not like them?
Why are they there?
What will the impact of removal have on the environment?
Does the methods used pose a risk for other animals or kids etc.?
METHODS USED
Methods, where they are killed instantly and humanely, are recommended with large scale rodent problems. Glue traps, blunt force trauma and poison are certainly not the way! The problem with snap traps is, that many choose cheap traps that are not well designed. This leads to suffering. Some choose shooting, but for that, you will need a permit and it may not be in residential areas.
Source: PETA
Rodenticides – A second generation of ultra-potent rodenticides creates a first-class crisis for people, pets, and wildlife. With rodenticides, it is an agonizing death for the victim and when other animals eat these dead rodents they can die too. For a rodent to get a lethal dose from a first-generation rodenticide it has to eat it more than once.
KILLING IS ONLY A SHORT-TERM SOLUTION
Killing rodents can only provide short-term control of populations. As with feral cats, if you remove a mouse/rat colony you will create what is known as a vacuum effect. This means a new colony will move in or the remaining animals will breed to capacity. Feral cats and rodent colonies form around food sources. Keep in mind, the need to control rats is largely the result of a lack of cleanliness in the immediate environment.
Sustainable control can only be achieved by reducing the rodent carrying capacity of the environment and one way is by reducing food and harbourage.
SOME OTHER OPTIONS:
Rat-proofing a building is the only sure way to deter rats. Killing them will only cause other rats to move into the newly available spaces.
After rat-proofing your building, give the remaining animals a chance at life by live-trapping and releasing them outdoors. There are guidelines for where, how far etc.
Using domestic or natural predators. If these predators are brought in you need to do it with environmental expert as it can lead to other problems. Owls and snakes are some of the most common natural predators. Foxes eat rats too.
Support Feral/community cat projects where the cats are trapped, neutered and returned. They help a lot with rodents control.
If you aren’t a fan of having cats or owls living with you, we recommend pranking the rats. Using cat litter, rubber snakes or owl feathers can work well. Therefore, tricking the rat into thinking that a cat or owl lives on your premises will scare the rat into possibly making a quick exit. Additionally, farmers and homeowners suggest placing tubs of used cat litter near entry points in your home. The smell will deter the rat.
Peppermint Oil, Steel Wool, Rodent Repellent sprays, Irish Spring bars cut up, Rolling Log Mouse Traps (no water), Catch & Release Mouse Traps can also be considered.
It doesn’t matter what the problem is, no animal should endure suffering, ever! If you have any “pests” please contact your nearest SPCA to ask what is the best way to address the issue safely!
Is u skool GoedgeKeur? Wat is by jou skool GoedgeKeur?
Is my kind veilig by die skool?
Kinders is ouers se kosbaarste besitting.
Goedehoop moedig massa-deelname aan by alle Mini-Sporte soos bv.
Been A & B) verdeel is.
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

THE UNIVERSAL SPIRIT OF STUDENT SPORT
Participation in sport and other recreational activities are considered important facets in the unity and holistic education process of students. To promote sporting values, means encouraging friendship, fair-play and co-operation among students who will one day occupy responsible key positions in education, politics, industry, economy and culture. It also means giving a new dimension to the student spirit of study and research in that individuals are given the opportunity to develop not just intellectually, but also morally and physically.
University Sport activities provides the opportunity for youth leaders of the future to meet and to foster lasting friendships which contributes to the development of a unified nation. Sport is considered an ideal vehicle for promoting mutual understanding amongst people with different cultures and histories. MPUMALANGA GOVERNMENT RECEIVES COVID-19 DONATION FROM SASOL
Sasol has donated mobile clinics, vaccine carriers, specialised medical refrigerators and freezers, and temperature loggers to the provincial departments of health in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State to support the rollout of vaccines in its host provinces.
Mpumalanga Government received their donation on Thursday 9 September 2021.
The donation was received by Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane at Nhlazatshe Clinic in Elukwatini, Gert Sibande District to augment its vaccination rollout programme.
Simon Baloyi, Sasol Senior Vice President: Regional Operations and Asset Services with Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane
Sasol has donated mobile clinics, vaccine carriers, specialised medical refrigerators and freezers, and temperature loggers to the provincial departments of health in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State to support the rollout of vaccines in its host provinces.
SASOL donated three fully converted panel vans to be utilized as mobile clinics, four vaccine cold storage fridges, five vaccine cold storage freezers, 30 vaccine carriers, 30 temperature scanners, one mobile science laboratory and launched the E-Learning programme.
Receiving the donation, Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane said the contributions will significantly bolster the number of vaccines and will help the provincial government to administer the vaccine rollout across the district whilst also preserving the longevity of the vaccine.
Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane’s speech
“This investment by SASOL will significantly aid our concerted efforts to achieve herd immunity in the province by the end of this calendar year.
“Thank you may not be enough, however we depend on you to demonstrate our gratitude to SASOL through the proper use of these facilities,” said Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane.
Recognising the challenge posed by the vastness of the South African landscape in enabling access to vaccines, Baloyi said Sasol decided to fast track its plans to donate equipment such as laptops, mobile clinics, and World Health Organisation-approved medical fridges, vaccine carriers, and temperature loggers to enable a much broader reach of government’s community vaccination drive.
“Our purpose as Sasol is to innovate for a better world. In line with that, our social impact approach aims to deliver effective and relevant interventions that enable the creation of partner leveraged social value,” said Baloyi.
Handing over the donation, SASOL Operations and Assets Senior Vice President Simon Baloyi encouraged the citizens to go all out and get vaccinated. Mr Baloyi shunned vaccination hesitancy and assured them that vaccines are safe.
Since the declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic in March last year, Sasol has:
produced and donated more than 1,6 million litres of alcohol-based sanitiser to frontline workers in hospitals, clinics, communities, as well as local and national government. These were distributed by its partners Stellar Transport, Reef Tankers, Imperial Logistics and Super Group Freight.
donated over 12 000 masks, 36 000 pairs of gloves and 5 000 safety suits and overalls towards frontline response efforts in its fence line communities.
converted several its buildings into quarantine centres for employees and their families.
transformed its mobile science laboratories, usually used for school education programmes, into COVID-19 screening and testing units.
donated a million litres of jet fuel to the Department of international Relations and Cooperation for the repatriation of South Africans stranded abroad: and
fast tracked the manufacturing of its own hand-sanitisers for use at its own operations, immediate fence line communities in Mpumalanga and Free State. This product was also distributed to employees of strategic partners.
In addition to the above, Sasol on Thursday, 09 September, also handed over a Mobile Science Laboratory and an e-Learning support programme to the Mpumalanga Department of Education to help address the challenge of poor access to technology especially for learners in rural and peri-urban areas.
“Our COVID-19 response has been multi-layered, consultative and collaborative to support efforts to flatten the curve with particular focus on our fence line communities within Mpumalanga, Free State, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal,” Baloyi said.
PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER WELCOMES HEFTY SENTENCE HANDED DOWN TO RAPIST AND MURDERER
Nelspruit – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela has welcomed a hefty sentence handed down to Sbusiso Nkosi, aged 36. Nkosi, who raped as well as murdered Nomcebo Simelane, aged 23 was sentenced on Monday, 13 September 2021 by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court which was sitting at Breyten.
Sbusiso Nkosi (36)
The court sentenced Nkosi after his guilty plea following overwhelming evidence brought forward by the state against him. The court heard that on 05 September 2020, Simelane was given a lift by Nkosi at a liquor outlet in Breyten after being requested to assist by his friend as it was late for her to travel alone at night. Instead of taking her home, he took a different route to a secluded area near the R36 Road. He then raped her and strangled her to death inside his vehicle.
Nkosi then dumped her lifeless body in an open field and fled the scene. The following day, he realised that her cell phone was inside his car and threw it into a sewage pipe in an attempt to ensure that no one would ever find out the truth.
Meanwhile, when her family realised that she was nowhere to be found, they went to report her missing at Breyten Police Station. Her body was then discovered next to the R36 Road on 06 September 2020. The SAPS members at Breyten worked relentlessly in their investigation and collected all the information which led them to the suspect. He was found guilty and sentenced as follows:
The accused was slapped with two life imprisonment terms for the murder and rape respectively and an additional three years imprisonment for theft. The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently.
Lieutenant General Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner has also praised the Investigation team, the Prosecution as well as the Judiciary for the sterling work done in this case which culminated into a well-deserved sentence. The sentence will hopefully serve as a deterrence to those who think that women do not deserve to live and be treated as human beings but rather suffer at their hands.
