Kedi Art Atelier is a registered art school with Con Spirito. Kedi Art submitted 10 entries this year, of which 6 of my students took 7 winning places in the competition,” said Adriana.

The competition is open for school children country-wide and in Namibia and this first round’s standards are very high according to the Founder and Director, Mrs Lizelle van Staden.

As it is the Organisation’s 20th year anniversary, the theme was “Celebrations” and the participants had a choice of graphite, paint, pastels, mixed media, wax crayons, collage, colour pencils, charcoal and photography. The children could enter one artwork in every category. The entries opened in January and closed on the 17th of February this year and the physical artworks were to be sent in by the 28th. Judging took place during the first week of March and the results were released on the 8th of March.

“I encouraged my kids to think further than the normal celebratory images of balloons, fireworks and streamers but to be daring and creative and boy, did they show up at this ‘party’!” said a delighted Adriana, “I am very grateful that they’ve done so well and VERY proud of every single one of them who entered and worked so meticulously on their projects.”

Dagga worth R250000 confiscated

JOINT EFFORT TOOK DAGGA WORTH R250 000 OF THE STREETS

On 31 March, five suspects were arrested and dagga to the value of R250 000 (89.5kg) cell phones, cash, and two vehicles was handed over to the Standerton Police for further investigation.

In a joint effort by Lourens Uys of Kasselman Security Services and Charl Cilliers Police, the suspects were arrested.

The owner of SA Crows Security Services operating in Charl Cilliers, MW Odendaal was driving on the Topfontein road when he noticed suspicious activity.

According to him, he noticed people with bags that came out from the field.

He went past slowly and saw people on both sides of the road.

He passed them and turned around and saw the two vehicles driving in the direction of the Tutukani main road.

A few moments later the one vehicle came back in the direction of Odendaal but went past him.

The BMW joined and tried to box Odendaal in, the effort was fruitless.

In the meantime, Odendaal alerted Charl Cilliers Police and Kasselman Security Services.

Uys apprehended three suspects with cash, cell phones, and dagga.

The other two suspects were apprehended by Charl Cilliers Police who waited for them on the Tutukani road when they tried to flee the scene.

Several bags, stacked with dagga, was found in the field.

DA demands Govan Mbeki Speaker must step down after successful MONC

The DA demands that Cllr Fikile Magagamela must step down as Speaker of Govan Mbeki Local Municipality as we no longer regard her as Speaker.

DA
Embattled Speaker Cllr Fikile Magagamela

This comes after the DA voted for a Motion of No Confidence (MONC) against Magagamela served by the ATM in a council meeting accordingly and within the rules of the council.

The motion was passed with 33 votes against 26 votes of the ANC. With a clear win to remove Magagamela, the ANC bullies turned Council into a circus just to protect her from being removed.

Opposition parties requested her to recuse herself as she cannot preside over a Motion of No Confidence against her. However, she allowed herself to be embroiled in a conflict of interest.

Supported by the Mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, Magagamela refused and continued presiding allowing the vote to be taken.

MMC Thandiwe Ngxonono taunts the EFF as oposition parties leave council

“Even though the vote was clearly ousting the Speaker, she still refused to relinquish her seat. We cannot sit and allow this municipality to be controlled by bullies,” said Democratic Alliance Councillor James Masango.

“The ANC has shown us timelessly that they are less concerned about the people, but are only concerned with filling their pockets,” said James, “Their action at this council meeting shows how ANC Councillors are obsessed with just earning salaries and looting the coffers of the municipality.”

Moreover, while the ANC plays intimidation games, residents continue to experience poor service delivery:

• Water cuts and electricity blackouts daily,
• rubbish is piling up in and outside the residents’ premises and the streets,
• Sewer spillages on the streets because of pump stations that are dysfunctional,
• and roads are full of potholes.

There is no single opposition party including smaller parties prepared to work in a coalition with the ANC because of their bad record of poor service delivery.

After a delay of four hours in the meeting dealing with one item and not moving forward, the opposition parties decided to leave the meeting as it was not productive anymore.

The DA already regards Magagamela as the former speaker now, she must accept her fate and leave office. The majority has spoken.

The Klipspruit were contaminated at the end of January and dead fish were observed in the stream near Sasol Operations (SO)

An incident was reported by Sasol on January 31, 2022 when dead fish were observed in the Klipspruit.

This incident’s Actual Severity Classification was set at moderate with a potential severity level as significant.

The possible cause listed on the internal document that was shown to the Bulletin stated that the Equipment/product involved was “Contaminated stormwater released into the environment.

The water quality measurements at Receiving Environment Surface Monitoring station 7 (RESM7) indicated elevated concentrations compared to the limits as stipulated in the Water Use Licence for the Klipspruit.

The Bulletin was unable to establish the exact location of RESM7.

The Klipspruit runs through the Sasol secondary area

The Bulletin contacted Sasol for an official response.

This is Sasol’s response (placed verbatim)

Aquatic incident at the Sasol Secunda Operations facility

Secunda, Mpumalanga – On 31 January 2022, during routine monitoring of the Klipspruit by the Sasol Secunda Operations (“SO”), dead fish were noticed at the receiving environment surface monitoring station seven (RESM-7). Monitoring of the Klipspruit, Trichardtspruit and Kleinspruit is regularly conducted to monitor any possible impacts from Secunda Operations (SO) on these water resources. During the monitoring, it was also observed that raw sewage from an upstream pump station, unrelated to Secunda Operations or Sasol, entered the Klipspruit upstream of RESM-7. A comprehensive inspection was subsequently done on RESM-7. The aquatic impact was determined to be local and did not impact beyond the Sasol Secunda Complex.

Given the nature of the incident, as a precautionary measure, Sasol Secunda Operations opted to manage the observed dead fish as an incident and reported same to the Department of Water and Sanitation and the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and the Environment in accordance with applicable statutory requirements and within the associated timelines. Initial communications occurred on the same day that the dead fish was observed.

The incident was reported and is still managed on the premise that there was, at the time, and still is no conclusive evidence on the relatedness between SO’s activities and the observed dead fish.

Intermittent controlled releases of process water and storm water occurred at Secunda Operations before (approximately 8 hours) the dead fish was observed. These are governed in terms of a directive received from the DWS. In this regard we wish to point out that no dead fish or other aquatic impacts were observed when subsequent controlled releases occurred.

The above controlled releases support a key safety control, necessitated as an urgent measure to manage water levels in process water dams due to the unusually high rainfall experienced in the early part of the rain season (latter part of 2021 and early in 2022).

Managing the water levels within the design capacity of the process water dams is critical to maintain the integrity of the infrastructure in order to mitigate against a dam wall failure and potential consequential environmental catastrophe.

The storm water in question is assumed to be contaminated since it includes run-off water from within the plant area of Sasol Secunda Operations.

An incident investigation, including an aquatic impact assessment and additional specialists studies, related to this incident is being finalised. It will inform the need for and specifics of any additional preventative measures to be implemented by Secunda Operations in respect of the above-mentioned controlled releases in addition to complying with the conditions of the DWS directive.

No similar incidents have occurred in the past five years.

Sasol remains committed to the safety of its employees, the community and environment.

Sasol recently came under fire from the courts regarding Air pollution when the High Court ordered a clampdown on polluters.

Businesstech wrote the following about the court ruling:

A South African court ordered the government to take measures to improve the air quality in a key industrial zone, saying it had breached the constitution by failing to crack down on pollution emitted by power plants operated by Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd and refineries owned by Sasol Ltd.

Environmental Affairs Minister Barbara Creecy had a legal obligation to prescribe rules to implement and enforce anti-pollution regulations and had unreasonably delayed in doing so, High Court Judge Colleen Collis said in a ruling handed down in Pretoria, the capital, on Friday (18 March 2022).

She ordered the matter to be addressed within 12 months and that the new rules provide for penalties for non-compliance and adequate monitoring.

The so-called Deadly Air case, filed in the court in 2019 by groundwork, an environmental-rights organization, and the Vukani Environmental Justice Movement in Action was seen as a key test of the country’s resolve to deal with some of the world’s worst air pollution.

The so-called Highveld Priority Area, which includes much of north-eastern Mpumalanga province and part of the central Gauteng region, is the site of 12 coal-fired Eskom power plants, and an oil refinery and coal-to-fuel plant owned by Sasol.

A Greenpeace study conducted in 2018 showed Mpumalanga had the worst nitrogen-dioxide emissions from power plants of any area globally.

Mclaren Circus issued warning by CoGH SPCA

Cape of Good Hope issued a warning to Mclaren Circus.

The Cape of Good Hope issued a warning to Maclaren Circus listing several issues to be corrected.

The Bulletin posted an article on December 9, 2021 regarding animals in circuses. The article was called: ANIMALS 101 – DON’T BE CAPTURED BY CIRCUS CAPTIVITY!

Although it was part of our very popular Animals 101 series and written as a column, Mclaren Circus took exception to our article and laid a complaint at the press Ombudsman. Although the Ombudsman thought that we were within our rights, we decided to offer Mclaren Circus the opportunity to publish a “Right to Reply”.

This was done on January 20, 2022. The article was called: McLaren Circus – Right of reply.

Carte Blanch recently aired a section on Mclaren Circus. Here is their video:

Clowns, acrobats, trapeze acts and trained animals– traditionally, the circus is known as the “greatest show on earth”. But as activists fight for the rights of animals, fewer circuses feature animals as part of their entertainment. But in South Africa, there’s still one travelling circus refusing to abandon its traditions, transporting animals from city to city in a caravan, and having them perform night after night for weeks at a time. While the owner insists he has their welfare at heart, activists argue a circus is no place for animals and that it’s time to put an end to this archaic way of life. Carte Blanche investigates.

The animal activist group “Ban Animal Trading” have been following the Mclaren Circus and protested at their venues.

The group protested outside the Mclaren Circus the past weekend when inspectors from the Cape of Good Hope issued warnings to Mclaren Circus on several issues found. The City of Cape Town withdrew their Events Permit after learning about the citations. This was reinstated on 29 March.

Here is the full list as posted by Cape of Good Hope SPCA on their webpage:

More than a 100 Animal Rights activists have over the past weekend protested outside the McLaren Circus as reported by IOL and Weekend Argus.   Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse and Inspector Jeffrey Mfini approached the Circus on Monday, 28 March 2022 to conduct an inspection. The circus management granted access, however denied the Cape of Good Hope SPCA the right to take photographs of the cages and concerns found.

The inspection yielded at least six contraventions of the Animal Protection Act, requiring of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA to issue a warning with certain contraventions to be addressed within 48 hours and others within 7 days.  The contraventions listed included the following:

  1. A female lioness was found confined to the front compartment of the trailer housing/transporting the big cats.  The lioness did not have access to drinking water and did not have access to the other compartment (separated from the other lions) and the outside exercise area.  This compartment affords inadequate space for the confinement of a lion and, for this reason, no lion should be confined to such a compartment without access to the other compartment and the outside exercise area (except during transportation).  (See Section 2(1)(b) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.)  Note:- We were advised by Mr David McLaren that the lions were separated because they were fighting.  If this is the case, then adequate provision should be made for when the lions fight, and they should be kept separately at all times (to avoid fighting) with all animals being allowed access to sufficient space.
  2. A female lioness did not have access to any form of drinking water.  Drinking water must be provided at all times, for all animals. (See Section 2(1)(c) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.)
  3. Concerns were raised about the three (3) French Poodles (Jamie, Sasha and Kiemie) and their dental state.  A veterinarian must examine all three (3) dogs within 48 hours for the dental concerns and possible dental cleaning.  A veterinary report must be forwarded to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA to confirm that the three (3) dogs were examined and specify the treatment that was administered, if any.  The veterinarian must also confirm, in writing, that the three (3) dogs are fit for performance purposes.  (See Section 2(1)(e) and (i) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962)
  4. The animals, particularly the Lions and Bengal Tigers, must be provided with additional environmental enrichment, which should be changed regularly to keep the animals interested and occupied to alleviate captive stress.  The wooden log currently being provided to the big cats in each exercise area is insufficient.  Adequate and sufficient environmental enrichment must be provided within 48 hours.  (See Section 2(1)(a) and (r) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.)
  5. The animal enclosures/cages of the animals were found to be unhygienic and had a putrid smell.  The enclosure/cages must be cleaned at least once a day – or more, if required – to avoid the accumulation of faeces and urine.  (See Section 2(1)(e) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
  6. An evident fly problem needs to be addressed urgently, particularly with regards to the Lions and Bengal Tigers.  This problem could be a result of poor hygiene standards.  Adequate fly repellent must be sourced within 24 hours and applied accordingly to protect the animals from external parasites such as flies.  (See Section 2(1)(e) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.)
  7. The ramp in the lion compartment, leading in and out of the trailer, does not have any form of gridding on the ramp (like the ramp the Bengal Tigers use).  Sufficient gridding must be placed on the ramp within 7 days to avoid the lions from slipping and getting injured, especially in wet weather conditions.  (See Section 2(1)(a) and (r) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.)

The warning was issued in terms of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 169 of 1993.  Failure to comply with this warning may render McLaren Circus liable for prosecution under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 and / or Performing Animals Protection Act 24 of 1935.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is opposed to wild animals in circuses.  Wild animals belong in the wild.

The article quoted by CoGH SPCA from IOL can be found HERE. It refers to the Animal Activist group Beauty Without Cruelty (BWC) SA.

The following are quotes from that article:

BWC chairperson Toni Brockhoven said they wanted to create public awareness about how important it is that animals were freed from the circus.

“Ther animals are kept in cages, especially the wildlife. Animals can go to a sanctuary and live out their lives naturally,” she said.

“There should be no human interference or interaction with wild animals unless medically necessary,” she added.

Public relations spokesperson for Mclaren Circus, Karl Hildebrandt, said that BWC has selective empathy regarding circus animals.

“They seem to show more concern about one species than the other, when their mission is aimed at animals, is this not contradictory?”

“What is natural for any animal born in captivity? Our beautiful animals are hand-raised in the circus environment and this lifestyle has become their ‘natural’.”

“Because our animals are captive-bred they would never experience the “wild”. They are fully dependent on us humans to protect and care for them. We have a retirement facility in Meyerton, Gauteng where we already house our retired circus animals.”

The SPCA said the McLaren Circus did not receive a permit that was required for animal keeping.

Chief Inspector of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Jaco Pieterse, said a specific permit is required in terms of the animal keeping by-law for any establishment to exhibit or place animals for show within the City of Cape Town.

“An Inspector authorised in terms of section 8(1) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 must be consulted for comment and input by the City before any such permit is issued, which was not done in this instance,” he said.

The world is banning zoos and Circuses using animals. Should this be the case with Mclaren Circus?

ANIMALS 101 – BAD EXCUSES FOR GIVING PETS AWAY!

ANIMALS 101 – ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANISATIONS HAVE HEARD IT ALL, NO JOKES!

Surrendering animals is an all-year-round thing, but especially the first few weeks into the new year, shelters and rescues are overwhelmed, so much, that some have to say “we are full” and can’t take in any more.  It is just heartbreaking! What follows, might sound ridiculous to you, but if you volunteer in animal welfare you have heard all this!

HELLO.  YOU HAVE REACHED THE KENNELS.

Due to the high volume of calls we have been receiving, please listen closely to the following options and choose the one that best describes you or your situation:

Press 1 if you have a 10-year-old dog and your 15-year-old son has suddenly become allergic and you need to find the dog a new home right away.

Press 2 if you are moving today and need to immediately place your 150 pounds, 8-year-old dog.

Press 3 if you have three dogs, had a baby and want to get rid of your dogs because you are the only person in the world to have a baby and dogs at the same time.

Press 4 if you just got a brand new puppy and your old dog that you’ve had for 16 years is having problems adjusting, so you want to get rid of the old one right away.

Press 5 if your little puppy has grown up and is no longer small and cute and you want to trade it in for a new model.

Also read: ANIMALS 101 – HOW THE LITTER IN YOUR GARBAGE BIN AFFECTS ANIMALS?

Press 6 if you want an unpaid volunteer to come to your home today and pick up the dog you no longer want.

Press 7 if your old dog has had years of being tugged at and jumped on by your children, and now the dog is sore and arthritic he has shown his teeth so you need to get rid of him right away instead of teaching your kids how to behave.

Press 8 if your dog is sick and needs a vet, but you need the money for your holiday.

Press 9 if your dog doesn’t like your new partner.

Press 10 if your relative has died and you don’t want to care for their elderly dog, because it doesn’t fit your lifestyle.

Press 11 if you suddenly have no time for your dog.

Press 12 if your two-year-old male dog is marking all over your house, but you just haven’t gotten around to having him neutered or trained.

Press 13 if you want to return your recently adopted dog, and seeing him in kennels isn’t as heartbreaking as it was when you adopted him.

Press 14 if you heard that your unchipped dog has been brought to the safety of the kennels, but you’re angry and don’t want to pay the small fee that keeps the charity running & looking after dogs like yours.

Press 15 to leave us an anonymous garbled message, letting us know you have left a dog in our yard in the middle of January, which is in fact, better than just leaving the dog with no message.

Press 16 if you are going to get angry because we are not going to take your dog, that you have had for fifteen years because it is not our responsibility.

Press 17 if you are going to threaten to take your ten-year-old dog to be euthanized because we won’t take it.

Press 18 if you didn’t realize that dogs require exercise and training and your dog is a chore. So, you would prefer not to have a dog anymore.

Press 19 if you want one of our perfectly trained, housebroken, kid and cat-friendly purebred dogs that we have an abundance of.

Press 20 if you want us to take your dog that has a slight aggression problem, i.e. has only bitten a few people and killed your neighbour’s cats.

Press 21 if you have already called once and been told we don’t have any kennels left to take in dogs, so you called again to see if a different staff member could magic a kennel out of nowhere.

Press 22 if you want an 8-week old puppy for your kids in time for Christmas.

Press 23 if your dog has had a litter in time for Christmas and now that you’re making money from them, you want to get rid of the dog.

Press 24 if your young husky keeps getting out of your unfenced garden and would rather get rid of them than spend money on fencing and training. The same goes for cats!

Press 25 if you have found a “stray”, and when we collect it, you slip up by calling the dog his name and he cries when we take him away.

Press 26 if you’re lying to make one of us feel bad and take your pet off your hands.

Press 27 if you have done “everything” to housebreak your dog and have had no success, but you don’t want to train the dog.

Press 28 if you’re angry that we can’t rehome an unsocialized purebred dog with your children because you’re ok with the dog biting other kids.

Press 29 if you need a puppy immediately and cannot wait because today is your daughter’s birthday and you forgot when she was born.

Press 30 if your dog’s coat doesn’t match your new furniture and you need a different colour or breed.

Press 31 if your new partner of 4 weeks doesn’t like your dog and you are too stupid to get rid of the new friend instead of the dog.

Press 32 if you went through all these ‘options’ and didn’t hear enough. This press will connect you to the sounds of tears being shed by one of our staff who is holding a discarded old dog, while he is confused as to what he did wrong to be abandoned and homeless, and now has to wait for someone to see past his age and health problems and adopt him……
