Five deserving youngsters get Trust bursaries

After a stringent selection and interview process, five deserving youngsters from the Govan Mbeki municipality have been given all-expenses-paid scholarships, valued at R170 000 each, by the Southern Highveld Community Development Trust (SHCDT), a community social investment initiative of Graceland Hotel Casino & Country Club in Secunda to follow their dreams of obtaining a tertiary education.

The group recently travelled to Emperors Palace to attend an induction function and receive their official scholarship letters, much to their delight.

Five lucky local youngsters have each received an all-expenses paid scholarship this year, valued at over R170 000 each, from the Southern Highveld Community Development Trust (SHCDT), a CSI initiative of Graceland Hotel Casino & Country Club, to follow their dreams of obtaining a tertiary education. Here the lucky recipients, in the front, Angel Phakathi, middle, Asakhanya Maseti, Ellen Maseko, Philisiwe Mayaba and at the back, Nhlakanipho Mngomezulu (middle) celebrate this wonderful opportunity with Peermont Human Resources Executive, Fihliwe Molefi (middle right) and two SHCDT Alumni, Mishael Mashele (back left) and Mike Sibeko (back right) at an induction function at Emperors Palace recently. Successful businessmen, Mashele and Sibeko, who attribute much of their success to the opportunities that arose because of the SHCDT scholarships they received, were involved in the selection of the new bursary recipients.    (Photograph by Yolanda van der Stoep)

Top learner among the candidates, Nhlakanipho Mngomezulu, who obtained three distinctions when he matriculated from Vukuqhakaze Secondary School at the end of last year, is off to the University of the Witwatersrand to study for his BSc in Electrical Engineering degree.

The 17-year-old, who is one of 10 children, says he chose to study electrical engineering because it is a very broad course comprising of many disciplines and believes he will get exposed to ample opportunities.

When quizzed at the induction event what this scholarship means to him, he commented, “With this bursary, I’ll be able to fully focus on my studies and not worry about finances, so I have no reason to fail and my Mom still can’t believe that she won’t pay a cent towards my studies. It feels great to be granted such an opportunity!”

These feelings were reiterated by Chief Ampie Mayisa Secondary School matriculant, Philisiwe Mayaba (18) who added it (the scholarship) means a lot to her family and she can’t believe it is happening – that she has a fully-funded scholarship to start her BCom Economics and Management Sciences degree studies at the University of Pretoria.

The Leandra youngster, who achieved one distinction in her matric year, then went on to give her reasons for choosing her field of study. “Due to our economy, there is a shortage of resources which prompted me to follow this career path as I want to use research and data analysis to find innovative ways to improve the economy.”

Another of the scholarship recipients who have also selected a career path in which she can contribute to change in society is Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School matriculant, Asakhanya Maseti (18).

“I’ve chosen to study a BSc in Nursing at the University of Limpopo because I have the passion and love to bring about the change I want to see in healthcare,” says the eMbalenhle resident who lists her attributes as being dedicated, responsible, ambitious and determined, which will certainly stand her in good stead in making a success of her career.

Fellow Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School matriculant, Angel Phakathi, who also obtained two distinctions last year like Maseti, is off to study LLB Law at the University of KwaZulu Natal thanks to the SHCDT.

“When they informed me that I got the bursary I was so excited because I knew that it was the beginning of my life, while for my family it means everything as they know that I will start this year smoothly and will be mentally fit to study,” the 18-year-old from Kinross commented after getting her scholarship letter.

The goal-driven go-getter, who believes in hard-work has her sights set on fighting gender-based violence and woman and child abuse by becoming a human rights lawyer after her degree.

The fifth recipient, KI Twala Secondary School matriculant Ellen Maseko, feels blessed that she has been included in the SHCDT programme and can now head to Sol Plaatje University to do a BSc Data Science degree without any financial concerns for her or her family.

Being motivated, driven, confident and enjoying challenges the eMbalenhle student says she was inspired to choose this career because there is a demand for people with data science skills and the pay is good.

Apart from having their tuition and accommodation expenses covered, getting their books and a laptop sponsored, the Trust also provides a comprehensive mentorship programme for scholarship recipients to enable them to cope and develop new skills during their time at university. The programme covers study skills, emotional intelligence and employability. Monthly mentorship meetings are also held with the students to ensure that they receive the much-needed socio-psychological support required.

“Over the years we have found that we are able to increase our graduation rate by offering learners additional support throughout the year. To this end the Trust has an impressive 85% graduation rate compared to the national graduation rate of 22%. This is exceptional considering that the learners hail from township schools,” comments Trust Manager, Jenny Findlay.

Apart from the university scholarships, the SHCDT bestows every year to help uplift the community in the Graceland catchment area it (the Trust) also provides the “Go-Getters Programme”. The latter was established to ensure there is a large pool of deserving young people available to benefit from the scholarship offering and improve the chances of learners successfully completing their tertiary studies and becoming economically productive.

In addition, the Trustees fund “Career Dress Up Day” every year where Grade 7 learners research, present and dress up in their chosen career. The day assists learners to make better career choices. The Trust also sponsors an intern programme giving selected young people, from the local TVET Collage, an opportunity to complete the practical component of their qualification.

So is die lewe: Tak

Hierdie lewensles het ek vroeg in my lewe reeds geleer.

Sommer so algemene doktoraal. Sielkunde, teologie, sterrekunde, medisyne en ingenieurswese. So ietsie van alles.

Maar hy was gelukkig. Binne sy leefwêreld het hy alles gehad wat hy kon begeer. Hy was skatryk aan vrede. Selfgenoegsaam. Tevrede. Niks uitstaande drome of ambisies nie.

New Wave of South African metal – Part 2

Rhutz was formed in 1999: Steven Foukaridis on vocals, Chris van der Walt and Richard Mare on guitars, Cicero Carstens on bass guitar and Heine van der Walt on samples and theremin.

They were game changers in the metal scene. Originally, they wrote a more of a rap-rock style, eventually evolving into the RhutZ we knew and loved. Their unique style of nu-metal flowed through peoples’ ears and was appreciated all over. Exploring mathematics, music and the human consciousness and dissecting it all to the roots and moulding into their sound.

“An emotional rollercoaster of dynamic, self-searching, math-driven melody and chaos. Plug into the colour of television”

The band opened for Brazilian metal legends Sepultura and Soulfly in 2003 and also played at numerous large festivals in SA. With their confidence up and their sound scorching, Rhutz was crowned best hardcore band of 2003 at SA’s premier venue: Burn Nightclub in Durban.

After hard work Rhutz decided to seperate, but not forever… In early 2005 the band joined hands again.

With a new line up they kicked off by playing at Witchfest in 2005. Shortly after they shared the stage with a hardcore band from New York: Most Precious Blood. In 2006 they played at Whitchfest again and melted the faces off of South Africans. They released an album in 2008: “The colour of television” (Wolmer records). The album gained them even more fans and popularity as time went on.

Interviews with Misty Waters Fans

0

Our team at Misty Waters thought it would be a stellar idea to do interviews with a few serious festival goers and Misty Waters’ fans. This way we can create a brighter idea of the festival happening at Lake Umuzi from April 30 to May 2, as well as give new Misty comers an idea of what to expect from their weekend at Misty Waters.

We travelled long and far to find these three fans, spread between two provinces and three cities. We include a few of their answers from the interviews in this article, but if you want to witness them on video, please head to YouTube, Facebook and/or Instagram.

The first person who took part in our interviews, was Phillip Grimbeek from Pretoria. He has been at every Misty Waters since 2017. He had the privilege of experiencing Misty Waters from its baby years and watched the festival grow into the teenager it is now. Misty Waters, now a young adult, has grown so much in itself. We have grown with respect to big names such as Spoegwolf, Karen Zoid, Fokofpolisiekar, Tidal Waves, Springbok Nude Girls and many more. We will continue to grow into a mature adult and bring you the best years of your life.

Phil told us more about how each year at Misty Waters has intrigued and inspired him as an avid festival goer. Last year was a big year for Misty Waters with Fokofpolisiekar bringing members on stage and Francois van Coke having them on his shoulders, whilst rocking out – keeping in mind, nobody passed out or “kotsed.” That is quite an achievement at a Fokof show!

Phillip Grimbeek

Phil enjoying a nice canoeing session on the Hadeda dam, the lake behind the Misty Waters stage.

Phil shared a crazy experience about the Misty Waters couches and how a friend got so comfortable he spent 24 hours on them. Phil and his group of friends were hanging out during the later hours of Misty Waters and a friend of theirs fell asleep on the Misty Couch-chilla (it’s one of the very comfortable leather couches placed around the Misty Waters venue ground). They left him there, only for him to wake up the next day during the late afternoon. Misty Waters not only brings you the best of music, but please come and chill on our marvellous couches during the day.

We then embarked on a journey through the beautiful cosmos flowers to the place where Misty Waters itself will be taking place. We met with Kevin Herbst from Secunda and interviewed him on the actual Misty Waters stage, where Danie from Spoegwolf had everyone on stage last year to rock out with the band. Kevin pointed out how this was one of his best experiences in his whole life.

Kevin Herbst

Kevin and his friend Cooper cheering with Danie (left) and Albert (right) from Spoegwolf, in front of the Misty Waters stage.

We then asked Kevin how it is to have a tremendous festival like Misty Waters in his home town. To which he answered : it lifts the spirit of the town, bringing different and amazing people to the town, as well as a new event to look forward to every year. Kevin, as a local from Secunda, doesn’t stay at his house while attending the festival, but he prefers to camp as he states the festival facilities are much better than at his house.

Finally, we ventured to the city of gold to interview Kirstin. She’s been to many festivals, including the amazing Splashy Fen and Oppikoppi (that unfortunately won’t be happening again this year). Kirstin elaborated on the facilities you can find at Misty Waters that stretches further than just the Misty Waters grounds. Misty Waters is located next to Lake Umuzi, which is a waterfront full of fun activities. She mentions the restaurant EISH!! where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is Panda’s, a pool hall with multiple tables for your entertainment, and don’t forget about the more upper-class Zebra Lounge, where a whiskey or gin can be enjoyed. We are not encouraging you to leave the wonderful Misty Waters grounds filled with fun, food and shopping stalls and diverse music, but let’s say you do need that quick break away – as you can see there are many other things to do.

Speaking of the diverse music one relishes in, Kirstin told us that she is most excited to experience Karen Zoid, Spoegwolf and Tidal Waves. She also mentions how she hasn’t seen Springbok Nude Girls live, and says she loves how Misty Waters always brings different artists to your attention.

Kirstin

As she currently resides in Johannesburg, we deemed it necessary to ask her about the road trip to Misty Waters and how she feels about it. She said it’s a good drive, seeing as it is only an hour and 45 minutes, which allows you to easily drive after work and still arrive at Misty Waters pumped and excited for the weekend.

It was a lot of fun speaking to these Misty Waters’ fans and hearing more about their love for the festival. If you want to hear Kevin’s CRAZY story about Misty Waters, and the three powerful words Phil uses to describe Misty Waters, head over to YouTube, Instagram, and/or Facebook to see the video of the interviews.

Trust me, you are going to want to see this video, as Dian (Misty Waters’ organizer) puts Phil in “The Hot Seat” where they each eat a chilli and try to get through some questions without completely falling apart. Phil, “…as Misty Waters so warm gaan wees soos hierdie chilli, julle, gaan dit ‘n warm festival wees!”

Interviews with Misty Waters Fans
