ANIMALS 101 – PREVENTING CRUELTY TO ANIMALS, SO GO ORANGE IN APRIL!

0

WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND CRUELTY TO ANIMALS BETTER, YOU CAN HELP US ADDRESS THE PROBLEM MORE EFFECTIVELY.

Animals do not have a voice, so we need to be their voices! When was the last time you heard of anyone tuning themselves in for animal abuse? It just doesn’t happen often, if at all, the tuning in I mean. Preventing animal cruelty is in all of our best interests. Animal cruelty is not only despicable in its own right, but it is often a gateway crime to violence against adults and children. Studies show that children who witness animal abuse are at a greater risk of becoming animal abusers themselves.

We follow the 5 (6) freedoms of animal welfare:

  1. FREEDOM FROM HUNGER & THIRST
  2. FREEDOM FROM PAIN, INJURY, DISEASE
  3. FREEDOM FROM DISCOMFORT
  4. FREEDOM FROM FEAR & DISTRESS
  5. FREEDOM TO EXPRESS NATURAL BEHAVIOURS

…….AND THEN OUR HOPE FOR ALL WILDLIFE, TO BE FREE!

We are committed to breaking the cycle, and to help us stop animal cruelty, you need to understand the problem or how you might be contributing, recognize the signs, report it, and help educate others to prevent it.

1. UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

If you do not work in animal welfare or know someone who does, you probably know very little about what is really going on. What you might see on Facebook and social media is not even the tip of the iceberg. Our hearts break every day for the hurt that is out there. It is preventable!

A few facts about animal abuse:

  • The abuse of pets and animal companions is a daily occurrence.
  • Many animals suffer multiple forms of abuse, with the most common type of abuse being neglect and abandonment.
  • Cases of animal abuse include neglect, shooting, stabbing, fighting, beating, mutilation, torture, strangulation, rape, cannibalism, burning and poisoning.
  • Most animal abuse is never reported.
  • Dogs and cats are the most common victims, but abuse happens among other animal species, including domestic, farm animals, wild animals, small pets, birds, etc.
  • Although there are bad people, ANIMAL OVERPOPULATION is a massive problem, especially with cats and dogs. If there were fewer animals, with enough “good homes”, fewer animals can land in the wrong hands and be abused.
  • Why is there an OVERPOPULATION CRISIS? Because people don’t sterilize their pets, they support breeders and give or sell them to anyone. When animals end up in the wrong hands, they pay the ultimate price. There are animal dealers, who easily fool the untrained individual. Do you want to take that risk with the life of a sentient being?

This needs to be addressed through education, sterilization campaigns and stricter breeding regulations. We will rather see a breed go extinct than let them endure suffering.

ONCE YOU LEARN TO RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS OF ANIMAL ABUSE, YOU’LL BE BETTER EQUIPPED TO REPORT IT.

The Humane Society divides cruelty into two kinds: direct violence and neglect. Some call it active vs. passive cruelty.

  • Direct violence. Signs include open wounds, multiple scars, limping, or difficulty walking. Many dogs that suffer direct violence will also display behaviours such as hiding, walking with their head down and tail between their legs, or cringing when people approach. Since those can also occur for other reasons, these behavioural signs alone shouldn’t be taken as definitive proof that a dog is being hurt.
  • Neglect. Most people don’t go so far as to actually lay hands on their pet to hurt them, but what happens with far too many owners is just as bad: they neglect the needs of their dog/pet.

CRUELTY CASES

All animal cruelty cases can be separated into three basic categories:

  • It may be hard to believe, but many people don’t even know that the harm they are inflicting on their pets, is in fact abuse. This type of abuse is known as unintentional, and it’s caused through neglect, animal hoarding, or failure to meet an animal’s basic needs.
  • Intentional animal abuse and cruel intent both refer to abuse that is performed with the knowledge that an animal is being harmed and possibly injured.
  • Cruel intent is often recurring and abusers in this category feel a sense of power, control, or enjoyment when inflicting pain on these animals.

11 SIGNS OF CRUELTY (Bulawayo SPCA)

1 – POOR BODY CONDITION AND NOTICEABLE TRAUMA

The animal has severe matting and a filthy coat, hair loss, lesions, scabs, or other skin conditions that have not been treated. Open sores or obvious wounds. They appear to be flea or tick-infested. They are underweight with bones clearly visible or dehydrated. They might be limping or unable to walk at all or have congested eyes or ears. They are in obvious physical distress, have no signs of medical care like bandages, etc., and require veterinary care. Withholding/denial of medical care whether sick or injured is also considered cruel.

2 – LACK OF FOOD OR WATER

Every time you see this animal you notice that they have no obvious sources of food and/or freshwater. They may be aggressive due to starvation and thirst, and perhaps very lethargic.

3 – LACK OF SHELTER

The animal is contained in an area that is largely or fully exposed to inclement weather or constant sun.

4 – LACK OF SANITATION

Faeces and/or debris cover the animal’s living area. Offensive odours coming from a home or yard, such as the constant smell of ammonia or faeces.

5 – ABANDONED

The animal is left in a house, yard, or other areas that appear empty or devoid of normal human activity. Reports of companion animals abandoned and left to die inside vacant buildings are alarmingly common. It is a crime under SA law to abandon an animal.

6 – THE ANIMAL IS TIED OR CAGED

They have little or no room to move and are unable to stand or turn. Animals are kept confined inside a car, garage, basement, attic, or other enclosed areas.

7 – CHAINS, ROPES, WIRE, OR PADLOCKS AROUND THE ANIMAL’S NECK

Be on the lookout for anything around an animal’s neck that may have become embedded and/or infected, including regular collars. If an animal is tied there are chaining or tethering regulations that need to be followed!

8 – SIGNS OF AN ANIMAL BEING TRAINED TO OR HAVING BEEN USED TO FIGHT

This is especially common with power-breed dogs, and even roosters. You may see training implements, treadmills, spring poles, etc. More likely you will notice obvious signs of trauma, including scars, open wounds, infections, and even missing body parts, such as ears or tails.

9 – THE ANIMAL’S BEHAVIOR IS ABNORMAL

They may be very aggressive, hostile, ill, distressed, or severely shy, e.g., cowering, hiding, fear-biting, even with or especially with the owner.

10 – TOO MANY ANIMALS LIVING ON ONE PROPERTY

This can be a sign of animal hoarding, which makes the conditions no less cruel. An estimated hundreds of thousands of animals are hoarding victims each year. An individual who has a large number of animals in his/her care and they may not even know the total number when questioned. Animals are kept in overcrowded, deteriorated areas. Your local municipal bylaws state how many animals may be kept.

11 – OVERT ACTS OF VIOLENCE

An owner or any person who is being overtly violent against the animal, striking or throwing objects at them, or otherwise physically abusing them.

cruelty

There is no violence against an animal that is justified and a person who would abuse an animal in public or plain sight is likely doing far worse outside of view. The death of one or more animals under suspicious conditions should also be reported and investigated.

The above is there to help you understand cruelty better and know what to look for. Some of the above signs by themselves do not necessarily mean that an animal is being abused. It’s important to examine the entire situation before jumping to conclusions, but rather report it if you are unsure, so it can be investigated.

For EXAMPLE, you might notice that your neighbour’s three cats are infested with fleas and are physically uncomfortable. After a short conversation with your neighbour, you learn that all three cats are being treated, and they appear healthy and socially adjusted. You conclude that these cats are probably not being abused. On the other hand, you notice another neighbourhood dog with an obvious flea infestation who also looks emaciated, has open sores on its body and acts aggressively when approached. In this case, you may have reason to suspect abuse.

Newborn’s life saved, young mother, arrested.

A 23-year-old mother of three has been arrested for the attempted murder of her newborn baby at her male friend’s house, at Matangaleni Trust near Mkhuhlu on 11 April 2023.

It is alleged that the pregnant woman from Bushbuckridge visited her male companion for the first time.

According to the information, the male friend who was eager to meet her made all the necessary arrangements and they both met. On that fateful night, a few minutes before midnight, the woman responded to the call of nature and that was when the baby boy was born. Thereafter, she allegedly tried to conceal the baby’s birth by throwing him in the pit toilet.

Upon realising the ordeal by the male companion, police and medical practitioners were summoned to the scene and the newborn baby was safely rescued and he was brought out of the pit toilet alive.

Foundation plans to help with Ramadan donations

Al-Imdaad Foundation plans to help 60,000 people in 40 countries with Ramadan donations

The Al-Imdaad Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing aid and assistance to local and global communities in need, hopes to increase the number of donations it receives over Ramadan this year. The Foundation raises most of the money it needs to fund its charitable work over Ramadan, and this year, it would like to reach more people in need.

Ramadan is known as the month of compassion and generosity. As people fast during Ramadan they experience a little hunger, thirst, and weakness themselves, softening their hearts to the plight of those who experience this every day. All Muslims are encouraged to be generous and giving based on the central Islamic principle of Zakat, and this is especially true during Ramadan.

As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, Zakat is an obligatory charitable contribution that all Muslims who meet certain wealth criteria must make. It is paid on 2.5% of your Zakat-eligible wealth, and it is a deeply spiritual form of giving that helps provide aid to those in need.

Zakat donations made over Ramadan help sustain the Al-Imdaad Foundation throughout the year. As Ramadan approaches, the Foundation is gearing up for its annual Ramadan food hamper and feeding programmes. These hamper programmes provide a month’s supply of essential foods to families in need across 40 countries so that they can fast without difficulties. In 2023, the Al-Imdaad Foundation aims to assist up to 60,000 fasting people through the programme. The Foundation will also provide new clothes to orphans and struggling children in Syria, Gaza, Jordan, Kenya, DR Congo, and South Africa through its Eid clothes programmes.

Last year, some of the projects funded by Ramadan donations (which include Zakat donations and other donations) included:

  • an Afghanistan crisis appeal to provide food and emergency assistance to struggling Afghan families;
  • a Gaza Hospital which provides greatly needed medical services in the Gaza Strip;
  • support for Syria projects;
  • many local South African projects, such as Slice-4-Life, Winter Warmth, and Make breakfast Possible.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation also runs countless other assistance programmes throughout the year. Some of the NGO’s most recent projects include Pakistan Flood Relief Housing, the Pakistan Medical Centre, and the Rohingya Medical Health Post. The Foundation continues to expand its Jordan Refugee Village, as well as a variety of sustainable agriculture and garden projects in South Africa. The organisation will also continue to support Turkey and Syria by aiding with earthquake relief.

With so many important projects on the go, the Al-Imdaad Foundation always needs donations, and Ramadan is the perfect time to give.

“Ramadan is the month of generosity, and it is when the Prophet Muhammad,[AO1]  peace be upon him, would be at his most generous. This makes it the ideal time for us to strive to give out of love.”

Women in Mining – Prima Mokgokoloshi participates in Seriti’s programme

WOMEN IN MINING BENEFICIARY BELIEVE THAT “YOU NEED TO WORK SMART TO GAIN MUCH”

Inqubeko yomama (pty)Ltd, loosely translated as the achievement of women, was founded in 2019 by eMalahleni businesswomen Prima Mokgokoloshi. This enterprise employs six employees and renders industrial and domestic cleaning services to the mining sector and other clients.

women in mining
Prima Mokgokoloshi

Prima is one of twenty beneficiaries of Seriti’s Women in Mining programme, a holistic development programme aiming at empowering woman entrepreneurs in the eMalahleni/Middelburg area, which was launched in May 2022 by Seriti. This programme is being run by Collective Value Creation (CVC) until the end of 2023 and emphasises Seriti’s focus on women’s empowerment.

Like most entrepreneurs, Prima dreamed of owning her own business and noticed an opportunity in her neighbourhood to render a cleaning service. She was however faced with serious challenges such as adequate cleaning equipment and obtaining sustainable cleaning projects. To an extent, she still struggles to overcome these challenges and hence, this mother of six regards the Women in Mining programme as heaven sent where she hopes to gain more expertise, improve her business skills and grow as a businesswoman and individual. In particular, she would like to acquire more knowledge of the bidding and pricing process.

Also read: Women in Mining – Tebogo Rametse participates in Seriti’s programme

Prima, who likes to read wide on social media and enjoys jogging, says the programme has taught her so far that a business’ image, advertising and networking play an important part on how you present your business offering to clients. “As a woman, I was only relying on my own knowledge and experience in the field where I was mostly disadvantaged due to lack of knowledge on business management. This programme enables me to gain more exposure in the field and network with other experienced female entrepreneurs.”

CVC’s Project Manager on the programme, Orla Ollewagen, said that “As women have unique needs and face diverse challenges, particularly as an entrepreneur, a common thread arose from workshopping these needs prior to designing the programme.  Some core shared concerns include feelings of loneliness as a female leader; the daily struggle of juggling numerous roles, and not being taken seriously as a woman in business.  I have a passion for women’s development and am excited to see these ladies develop individually and collectively as they support one another to grow their own businesses as well as those of others.”

Prima has praise for her family’s support and especially her husband who stands in for her when she has to attend courses and meetings. He is also the company’s project manager. Asking her what advice she would give to other prospective female entrepreneurs, she replies, “You first need to love what you do and commit to your business. Ensure that you become proactive, and daily search for opportunities. It is not an easy journey but first gain knowledge and do thorough research on the type of business.”

Apart from growing her business, she would like to explore the field of property investment.

In closure, Prima has the following message to the sponsor of the programme. “It is an honour to be selected and be part of this programme. The sponsors have truly invested in the socio-economic growth of women. I have never thought that I would be considered for an opportunity of this magnitude and be groomed by a team of such great calibre. They are professional, kind, and understand our different backgrounds and ethics. I thank the sponsors for their investment, and I will ensure that their commitment will not be in vain.”

ANIMALS 101 – LEARN MORE ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE ISSUES.

EDUCATION IS KEY TO HELPING ANIMALS AND THEIR OWNERS AND FOR CHANGING ANIMAL WELFARE IN THE WORLD!

Sadly, most people don’t spend nearly enough time educating themselves on how to improve their pets’ lives or how to help other animals or animal welfare organizations.  Below you can find a summary of many of the animal topics in this ANIMALS 101 series from almost 24 months. This article is part five of the summary series and focuses on how you can help make a difference.  Here is part one, part two, part three and part four.

Let’s touch on a few of them!

WILD ANIMALS BELONG IN THE WILD AND NOT IN YOUR HOME AS PETS

SHEBA (tiger), like many other animals, paid the price with her life as well as those she killed because humans demand to keep exotic and wild animals in captivity or as pets, whether to exploit them for money or boost their egos, because they are ignorant, selfish, or stupid. Read part one & part two on the keeping of wild/exotic pets and why we don’t support it nor should you!

ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE

Animal welfare is like the Mafia, if you are in, you never get out! If you can’t get into the trenches (hats off to them), many people donate money to the cause or help in other ways, which is necessary too. Remember, it can look great on social media, but what questions should you be asking as a supporter? What goes on behind the scenes? Just because the organization is registered does not mean their intentions are pure. Due to mismanagement, negligence and fraud by some organizations, the rest have to work extra hard to prove they can be trusted.

It is important to choose to support reputable organizations and help hold them accountable. The Paw Company is a registered NPC and part of what we do is to train animal welfare organizations (free) on the business side of things and to hold those who work with animals accountable including veterinarians and other businesses that work with animals. Sadly, most of the public does not even know or understand half of what is going on in animal welfare and this article serves to help you make more informed decisions and for organizations to re-evaluate their effectiveness. Read more on how to keep veterinarians accoutable too.

PITBULLS – THE BAN THE BREED & THE BEHAVIOUR

After reports of a Pitbull attack killing a child of the owner and another killed by the neighbour’s dog, a massive uproar began and the call for a Pitbull ban went viral. Chaos is unfolding around us while many people are still unaware of the massive crisis surrounding these Pitbull breeds (and others) and sadly thousands of innocent animals, have and continue to pay with their lives.

The fact is that any breed can be taught to be aggressive and any dog can bite, but the difference is that a Pitbull can do more damage than a Chihuahua. Pitbulls sadly have gotten a bad reputation over the years. Pitbulls and other power breeds became “trendy” and gave owners a sort of “street credit”.

A ban on Pitbulls is not the solution but rather legislation and accountability for pet owners! Read more about the Pitbull crisis in SA.

THE MUZZLE STIGMA

Big dogs, small dogs, and all breeds and sizes may need muzzles sometimes. It is not only a breed-specific tool. Here are just a few of the many reasons all dogs should learn to be comfortable in a muzzle.

  • Accidents happen
  • Helps prevents blockages
  • Vet care
  • Grooming
  • New dog introductions & interactions
  • Evacuations
  • Aggression or rough play
  • Breed-specific legislation
  • Injury recovery
  • Training

PET LOSS & THE GRIEF THAT ACCOMPANIES IT

With their shorter lifespans, pet loss is inevitable and saying goodbye is something every pet lover faces eventually. Saying goodbye is the hardest part of our relationships with our pets. Regardless of the type of pet, furry, finned, or scaled, no matter the species, we love them with all of our hearts and feel their loss as strongly as we’d feel the loss of a human family member or friend.

It doesn’t matter whether your pet died because of age, injury, or illness, the death of a beloved pet is excruciating and grief is the response to that loss. It is a strong and sometimes overwhelming emotion. Grief is the price we pay for love.  They go together……that is the pact.

Read more about pet loss and the grief that accompanies it here or reach out to The Paw Company for more resources.  We know this grief all too well! Remember that grief is personal and grief from the loss of a pet is as valid as losing a friend or family member.

DECEMBER HOLIDAYS ARE TOUGH FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

The December holiday is always a tough time for animal welfare organizations and their staff.  There is always an extra influx of surrendered and lost animals, injured and scared ones after fireworks events, convenience euthanasia, extra expenses with fewer donations and then the additional problem of animals as gifts, etc. Animal welfare never gets a holiday as it is a 24/7 kind of job that is physically and emotionally exhausting. Read more on what we refer to as silly season here.

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO HELP ANIMAL WELFARE WITHOUT HAVING TO DONATE.

Animal welfare always needs your help for those without a voice! Your help does not have to be financial. There are ways to prevent animal welfare organizations from being overwhelmed or to stop animal cruelty by not taking part in cruel practices (even unknowingly). Read more on how you can help.

YOUR CLOSET – HOW TO WEAR IT KIND

Animal cruelty comes in many forms and you might, unknowingly, be contributing to it by supporting certain practices, industries, and buying certain beauty products or certain clothing items. With so many animal-friendly options available, and more on the market every day, it’s never been easier to have a cruelty-free wardrobe. FOUR PAWS shares how you can show more compassion in fashion in 5 simple steps.

IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS YOU CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE!

  1. Look for more sustainable plant-based fibres like organic or recycled cotton and hemp – these fabrics are gentle on the planet and can be found in so many fashion items.
  2. Go for products made from waste! Discarded fishing nets, plastic bottles, recycled polyester, and even used coffee grinds are being made into versatile, durable, and luxurious fabrics turning one of the world’s greatest problems – consumer waste – into one of its best solutions!
  3. Love pre-loved! Wearing it Kind doesn’t have to break the bank. Try the 80:20 rule – 80% pre-loved and 20% new and kind.
  4. Be a protector of oceans, rivers, and lakes every time you wash! Use a washing bag in your machine to capture nasty microfibres and put a stop to harmful microplastic pollution.
  5. Speak up! Already have a favourite brand you wish was doing more? Let them know! Your voice may be just the motivation they need to make their products better for animals, people, and the planet.

Your pets are your responsibility.  If you can no longer care for them, please surrender them to the SPCA or a reputable animal welfare organization. If you can’t afford to properly care for them or have the time to meet their needs, then don’t get them. Make the time to learn more about your pets and their needs.

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals awareness month, so next week we will look at how you can recognize and help prevent cruelty.
