ANIMALS 101 – NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS TO HELP YOUR PETS

0

YOUR PETS CAN BE HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER IN 2025 WITH SOME OR ALL OF THESE PAWSOME PET NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS!

The presents are opened, the Christmas leftovers are done…….and now it’s that time of year again when we think about what we shouda-coulda-woulda done differently last year and vow to do better this year. I wish you and your pets a Pawsome 2025! May life treat you the way you treat your pets!

A new year brings new goals, renewed hope and 365 days of opportunity for you and your pet to bond, develop healthier habits and discover new ways to live a full life. Your pet can live a better tomorrow with your help.

An important first step is to avoid becoming overwhelmed by the idea that you need to make big changes overnight. Baby steps in the right direction are the way to go. The important thing is to make a plan and move steadily forward.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR PET-POSITIVE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

SPAY & NEUTER YOUR PETS.

This is probably our most important one. There are so many benefits to this, plus you will help stop this massive overpopulation crisis in animal welfare. If your pet is already sterilized, thank you! Please consider sponsoring one other sterilization for someone in need this year.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT FOR YOUR PET AND FEED THEM A NUTRITIOUS DIET.

As with us humans, it’s all too easy for a pet’s weight to gradually creep up over time. Measuring your pet’s food accurately is the first step to take to prevent overfeeding.

The goal in offering your pet fresh food, which they can truly thrive on, is to mimic the ancestral diet of dogs and cats as closely as possible without breaking the bank. Feed your pet as much unprocessed, fresh food as you can afford.

Ask your holistic veterinarian for food recommendations appropriate for your pet’s species, age, breed and lifestyle. Feed the recommended amount, and limit treats to small goodies in limited portions. Add in some healthy items, such as bits of carrots, apples and blueberries.

If you give them bones, follow these guidelines! See some advice we shared from Dr Karen Becker (Veterinarian and co-author of The Forever Dog) on fresh food ideas.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW ABOUT ANIMAL CARE, BEHAVIOUR OR PET HEALTH EVERY WEEK.

Learn about the optimal care for your pet, and safety, meeting all their species/breed-specific needs. Observe your pet’s body language and learn what they are trying to tell you.

Check out The Paw Company’s index post on various animal topics and follow our ANIMALS 101 series here in The Bulletin every Wednesday.

PROVIDE A LIFETIME OF TRAINING AND SOCIAL INTERACTION.

Dogs, cats and other social animals can benefit from interaction with animals of the same species. Having a pet that is well-trained, obedient, happy, relaxed and responsive means that not only will your pet be easier to manage and safer in potentially dangerous situations, but you will also get more pleasure from your companionship as a result. Well-socialized have much less chance of winding up at an animal shelter.

Learn a new trick or address at least one of those behavioural concerns or “bad” habits of your pet. Get some professional help if you need to. Remember there is a difference between a trainer and a behaviourist. In the Secunda area contact our local trainer Jennifer.

IMPROVE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF PET FIRST AID AND CREATE A PET EMERGENCY PLAN.

Accidents happen and the odds are that when your pets eat something they shouldn’t or get hurt, you will be home alone and it will be after veterinary hours. That’s why it’s so important for a pet parent to know how to handle an emergency and what the plan is in case of a fire, a flood, a car accident, or possible evacuations. Save your veterinarian and other local vet’s emergency number on your phone. Read more on having an emergency plan.

Also, see how you can help animal welfare organizations here.

STRENGTHEN YOUR BOND WITH QUALITY TIME.

You have a relationship bank account with your pet. Some negative actions like frustration and intimidation equal withdrawals while positive actions like play and attention are investments or deposits. Keep a positive bank balance.

Spend more time with your pets than you did last year! This can be some one-on-one time with your dog or cat, even if just at home watching some TV and cuddling or playing or having an adventure in the outside world. Sometimes resolve to just sit with your pet and watch the world go by and always be in the moment, not on your phone when you spend quality time together.

MEET ALL THEIR NEEDS.

  • A suitable environment.
  • Appropriate diet and fresh, clean, cool, drinking water daily.
  • Companionship.
  • A chance to exhibit normal behaviour.
  • Good health and medical attention when needed.
  • Enrichment is also crucial for your pet’s well-being. This includes food, sensory, cognitive, physical habitat and social enrichment.

Read more about enrichment.

GET MORE EXERCISE & LET THEM SNIFF MORE.

It is good for both you and your pet. Get creative as exercise does not need to be boring. Play games or go for one of the 8 different walks.

Your pets didn’t have a choice when they came to stay with you and since you chose to have them, it is your responsibility to meet their every need! Next week we will continue with part 2 of this 3-part series on the pet-pawsitive New Year’s resolutions.

Do you have a New Year’s resolution for your pet?

WHEN YOU KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER!

Toe kom daar nuwe denke. Hy gee lewe ‘n ander naam: Dasein. Daarwees, eksisteer. Dis ander as lèèf, sonder noodwendige positiewe kenmerke.

Of jy kan by voorbaat opgee.

ANIMALS 101 – YOUR ANIMALS DESERVE BETTER

4

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ANIMALS YOU FORCE TO LIVE IN YOUR WORLD.

Even though most people are having a festive time, the animal welfare industry faces its worst time of year!  This happens due to the failure of the animal guardians (owners). If everyone took better care of the animals they choose to take in, then animal welfare would not have to clean up the mess year in and year out!

Do your animals deserve a better guardian?

If your animals are in the streets, they deserve a better guardian. Animals left to roam without protection face numerous dangers, including traffic, predators, and harsh weather. It’s our responsibility to provide a safe and loving environment for them.

If your animals aren’t groomed regularly, they deserve a better guardian. Neglecting grooming can lead to painful matting, skin infections, painful feet, and overall discomfort. Regular grooming keeps them healthy and happy.

If your animals are left alone for long periods, they deserve a better guardian. Pets are social creatures that thrive on companionship. Loneliness can lead to anxiety and destructive behaviours. If you go away without someone checking in on them regularly during the day, they deserve a better guardian. Ensure they have proper care and interaction, even when you’re not home.

Also, read about holiday safety as well as Christmas safety for pets.

If your animals are left outside in bad weather conditions, they deserve a better guardian. Exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, cold, heat, or storms can lead to serious health issues. Every pet should have a safe, warm place to stay, regardless of the weather.

If your animals don’t have adequate shelter, they deserve a better guardian. Every pet needs a safe, comfortable place to rest. Proper shelter protects them from the elements and provides a secure environment.

If your animals are fed unhealthy food, they deserve a better guardian. Nutrition plays a vital role in their health and longevity. Choose high-quality, nutritious food that meets their specific needs, and avoid feeding them harmful products, including cooked bones. This doesn’t have to break the bank!

If you do not provide them with safe, fresh, cool water, they need a better guardian. Access to clean water is vital for their health, especially in hot weather. Ensure they have plenty of fresh water available at all times, so they can stay hydrated and healthy.

If one of your animals were killed by another animal in your care, they deserve a better guardian.  We often hear stories of the dog or cat that ate the bird, the dog killed the cat, or one dog bit the other one.  Your animal should never have been set up to get injured or killed or to fail by killing another in your care.

If your animals don’t receive regular vet checks, they deserve a better guardian. Routine veterinary care is essential for preventive health. Regular check-ups, vaccinations, tick and flea treatment, and deworming keep them safe from diseases and suffering.

If your animals lack clean bedding, they deserve a better guardian. A clean and comfortable resting space is essential for their well-being. Dirty bedding can lead to infections and discomfort. When you change your bedding, change theirs too.

If you don’t spend quality time with them daily, they deserve a better guardian. Building a bond through play, exercise, training, and simply being together is essential for their emotional well-being. Every pet deserves attention, enrichment, and love.

If your animals don’t have a variety of safe toys, they deserve a better guardian. Toys provide mental stimulation and encourage healthy play. Without safe toys, pets may become bored or resort to destructive behaviours.

If your animals are not trained, they deserve a better guardian. Proper training helps keep pets safe, makes them feel more secure, and improves their behaviour. Remember, you can’t blame them if you don’t train them. Training doesn’t have to be formal; simple commands and positive reinforcement can build a strong bond and promote good behaviour.

If you use choke chains, shock collars, anti-bark collars, or any adverse tools on your animals, they deserve a better guardian.  These tools are there to make it uncomfortable or painful for an animal.  They are cruel tools.

If you breed or allow your pet to have a litter, which is never for her health, they deserve a better guardian. Any litter in our current welfare situation contributes to the massive overpopulation crisis and causes stress for the mother. Responsible guardianship includes spaying or neutering to prevent health issues and ensure a better quality of life for them.

If your animals don’t get vet treatment when injured or sick, they deserve a better guardian. Prompt medical attention is crucial for their recovery and well-being. Delaying care can lead to worsening conditions and unnecessary suffering. If you can’t afford to provide for the animals, then it is unfair to them to have them.

If you don’t allow your pets to be in environments and enclosures that meet their needs, they deserve a better guardian. Every animal requires an appropriate living space that provides safety and comfort.

If you don’t allow your pets to do what their species do, like digging, chewing, or barking, they deserve a better guardian. Engaging in natural behaviours is essential for their mental and emotional well-being.

If you use your animals only as tools for protection rather than companions whom you should protect, they deserve a better guardian. They are sentient beings, not security systems, and should be treated with the dignity and compassion any family member would receive. Although they can alert you, it’s your responsibility to protect them!

If you do not help your animals cope in stressful situations like thunderstorms and fireworks, they deserve a better guardian. If we force animals to live in our world, then it is our moral obligation to help them cope. This can be done by desensitizing them before the events, helping them during the stressful events, and destressing them afterward.

If you do not include them in your plans to move, they need a better guardian. Pets are part of the family, and they should be considered in every significant life change. Planning for their inclusion, transportation, and comfort during a move is crucial.

If you do not have an emergency plan that includes your pets, they need a better guardian. In times of crisis, having a clear plan for your pets is essential. This means knowing where they will go, who will care for them, and how they will be transported. Your animals deserve not to be left behind or abandoned in difficult situations. This also includes having a plan for them if you die. Are they included in your will?

If your animal is at the end of their life or suffering, you have the duty to help them over the rainbow bridge. It is a difficult decision, the worst I ever had to make, but an important last gift which you can give them. If you are not willing to make that decision because of your feelings, then they need a better guardian.

They are not “just animals”, they are sentient beings who feel pain and emotions. Animals need more than just love, food, and water; they need thoughtful guardianship that encompasses every aspect of their lives, including emergency preparedness and transitions. It’s our duty to ensure their safety and well-being in all circumstances.

The Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare

Ensure your pets enjoy the Five Freedoms of animal welfare:

  1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: Ensure access to fresh water and a proper diet.
  2. Freedom from Discomfort: Provide an appropriate environment, including shelter and bedding.
  3. Freedom from Pain, Injury, and Disease: Prevent and treat health issues.
  4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour: Allow them to engage in natural behaviours.
  5. Freedom from Fear and Distress: Ensure a safe and secure living environment.

Every animal deserves a loving and responsible guardian. By evaluating your care practices and making improvements where needed, you can ensure your pets live happy, healthy lives. They depend on you—let’s make their world better. Thank you to each who takes this responsibility seriously!

Animals are not just companions; they are beings with their own needs, emotions, and rights. We have a moral obligation to ensure they thrive in the world where they were forced to live in, not merely survive. If you cannot meet ALL their needs, then you should reconsider bringing them into your life. Each pet deserves a guardian who fully commits to their well-being, providing not just the basics, but a nurturing environment where they can flourish. Let’s be the responsible stewards our animals need us to be—because they rely on us to make their lives better. It’s time to step up, advocate for their welfare, and truly honor the trust they place in us.

If every person was a good guardian, then rescuers would not be overwhelmed.  You, not being a good guardian, might have been the reason that a rescuer quit or committed suicide. Your actions have a ripple effect.  Think about that.

After this, I hope you intend to be a better guardian next year.  Join us for the next three weeks as we share some pawsome ways you can do better for them.

WHEN YOU KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER!

Vaarwel Andries en Retha Spies!

Andries Spies het vanjaar afgetree na 25 jaar as skool hoof by Laerskool Trichardt.

The Bulletin asked Karla van Deventer to write a farewell statement from the Governing Body.

Here is their farewell:

The event was beautiful and worthy of such a great and legendary man. The eighty guests were spoilt with a three-course meal in a formal setting.

As Principal he was always focused on the greater and long-term investment in the learners, the building of a reputable school for the community and a wholesome work environment for the staff.

There will never be enough words to say properly thank you to a person who has dedicated his whole adult life to the education and development of young children. Mr Spies and his wife Mrs. Retha Spies will be greatly missed by all involved in the Laerskool Trichardt community. We can only be grateful that we had the opportunity to know them, and the privilege to have our children taught by them and to learn from their example.

We wish and pray that their retirement will be blessed and filled with great health and longevity. Laerskool Trichardt’s staff, parents and learners salute them!

So is die Lewe: Die Hartseer van Kersfees

0

Israel was in ‘n groot politieke krisis.  Hulle was omring deur vyandige lande. Die volk was verdeel.

Afriforum fails in RW interdict case

0

The court dismisses Afriforum’s unwarranted interdict against Rand Water with costs. This is the headline that is making rounds today.

Afriforum won a similar case in May 2023 against Rand Water (RW) when the Water utility company decided to cut the water supply to Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM).

GMM has been struggling to supply water to its residents due to several factors including Rand Water pumping at half capacity most of the time. Huge distribution losses also play a big part in not supplying water to every resident.

This was the opening paragraph of the post in The Bulletin dated May 11, 2023:

AfriForum won an order against Rand Water with costs in the Pretoria High Court today. In November 2020, Rand Water reduced the water pressure in several areas due to the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality’s inability to settle outstanding debts.

More recently residents have had to cope with lengthy periods without water, some areas such as Bethal have been coping with no water for over three months. Some residents claim that they have been without water for more than 120 days.

Afriforum based their case on a statement by GMM Democratic Alliance Councillor, Fiona Pelman, in a media statement of 29 November 2024, alleging that during a Portfolio Committee meeting with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), a member of Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, Mr Speedy Mashilo, MPL, indicated that Rand Water had taken steps to reduce or throttle water supply in the GMLM by 50% due to the outstanding debt of more than R800 million that the Municipality owes to Rand Water.

Rand Water, according to the official GMM communications, regularly informed GMM that they are pumping water at half capacity (or none at all) due to “High Demand” in other areas as also seen by The Bulletin.

In court, Rand Water contested these claims by Afriforum and proved to the court that no formal decision to throttle or reduce the water supply to GMLM had been taken. Rand Water presented evidence to the court demonstrating that the allegations were unfounded.

After hearing arguments from both Rand Water and AfriForum, the court dismissed AfriForum’s application and granted a cost order against AfriForum. The dismissal was based on two critical findings:

  1. No throttling decision had been made by Rand Water. Rand Water successfully demonstrated to the court that it had not implemented any measures to reduce/throttle water supply to GMLM, rendering AfriForum’s claims baseless.
  2. Failure to establish urgency. The court ruled that AfriForum had failed to establish sufficient grounds for the matter to be heard on an urgent basis.

AfriForum’s premature application not only lacked factual support but mischaracterized Rand Water’s position on matters relating to its mandate of providing bulk potable water to its municipal customers. Rand Water perceives AfriForum’s sustained mischaracterization as part of the broader agenda of some sections of society to discredit the entity and its leadership. If AfriForum’s intentions were sincere, AfriForum would have engaged Rand Water to obtain the facts and Rand Water would have provided the required facts.

“As a state-owned entity, Rand Water has a huge responsibility to provide bulk potable water to municipalities in its areas of operation to enable municipalities to service their communities,” said Rand Water in a statement to The Bulletin, “Rand Water therefore pleads with organisations such as AfriForum and its affiliates to afford the entity a space to do so, rather than attempting to disrupt the entity from focusing on its mandate. In turn, Rand Water requests these entities to use their influence to persuade municipalities that owe Rand Water to pay for the bulk potable bulk water that they receive from Rand Water to ensure the sustainability of Rand Water.”

“Furthermore, these organisations can work with municipalities to reduce non-revenue water that municipalities are losing to ensure that most of the water that Rand Water supplies to municipalities reaches the communities they are intended for.”

“The ruling reinforces Rand Water’s transparency and commitment to supplying reliable and quality bulk potable water. The ruling further debunks misleading narratives that are aimed at discrediting Rand Water and its leadership while creating unnecessary public panic,” concluded the statement

But, in the meantime, residents have to live without water while the blame game continues between RW and GMM.

ANIMALS 101 – ENSURING PET SAFETY DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON

2

FESTIVITIES DURING THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY MAY POSE DIFFERENT DANGERS FOR YOUR PETS.

With the holiday season in full swing, it’s essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of our furry companions. The festive atmosphere brings joy, decorations, and traditions. However, it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers that these festivities pose to our beloved pets. In addition to pet-proofing your Christmas decorations, consider the following tips to ensure a joyful and safe environment for your pets.

PET-PROOFING YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE (Dr.Karen Becker)

Ditch the Tinsel: Tinsel, with its alluring light-catching abilities, can be a tempting toy for pets, risking digestive tract obstructions. Opt for natural material garlands securely wrapped around the tree.

Choose a Medium-Sized Tree: A medium-sized tree (1.5 m) is recommended for households with pets to minimize the risk of toppling over.

Avoid Decorating with Food: Resist the temptation to adorn the tree with candy canes and cookies, as it can pose a health risk to pets. Even seemingly harmless items like popcorn garlands should be avoided.

Opt for Shatter-Proof Ornaments: Glass ornaments are breakable, presenting a risk to pets. Choose shatter-proof alternatives from natural materials like wool, silk, or wood.

Consider an Artificial Tree: Pets may be attracted to real tree needles, potentially causing stomach upset. An artificial tree eliminates this risk and prevents climbing, especially if the trunk is wrapped in foil.

Anchor Your Tree: Securely anchor the tree to a wall or ceiling to prevent accidental tipping.

Securely Attach Ornaments: Use secure fastenings like twine or string instead of metal hooks to reduce the risk of ingestion.

Be Cautious with Electrical Cords: Shorten and secure extension cords to minimize the risk of electrocution or entanglement. Consider using cords with automatic shut-off features.

Place Heirloom Ornaments at the Top: Keep valuable or sentimental ornaments out of reach of pets.

Make Your Tree Inaccessible: If pets are persistent, use a baby gate, or an elevated stand, or place the tree in a pet-restricted room.

CHRISTMAS FOOD TIPS

Avoid Toxic Foods: Do not feed pets chocolate or caffeinated items containing theobromine, which is toxic to cats and dogs. Also, avoid alcohol, onions, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, or sugary stuff.

Beware of Bones: Steer clear of feeding small and cooked bones to prevent obstructions, constipation, or dental emergencies. Please do not buy raw hides!

Limit Fatty Foods: Avoid fatty foods that can lead to stomach upsets and other severe conditions.

Offer Safe Snacks: Provide safe, healthy snacks such as fruits (apples, strawberries, watermelon) and veggies (carrots, broccoli) as treats.

Educate Guests: Ensure that guests are aware of the food rules for your pets to prevent accidental feeding of harmful items.

OTHER SAFETY TIPS

  • Never leave your pets alone for more than 12 hours without someone checking in on them.
  • Keep your pets warm when it is cold and cool when it is hot.
  • Supervise play with toys, especially new toys.
  • If you are having guests over or young children, remember that it can be overwhelming for your pets.  Create a safe pet-only space where your pet can feel secure and tell your kids and guests, not to disturb them in that space.
  • Save your veterinarian’s emergency number in advance and make sure you know which trusted veterinarians are available and when.
  • Wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons can cause intestinal blockages if your pets ingest them.  This can cause serious illness and death.
  • If you are traveling with your pets, follow these safety tips. You can also take something familiar (bed or toy) with you to help comfort them.
  • If you travel and see an animal injured or in distress, please contact your nearest SPCA.  You can find your nearest SPCA on www.nspca.co.za.
  • Remember to not give animals as gifts. Read why here.
  • Prepare your pets for fireworks displays if you have a noise-phobic pet.

Also, read last week’s article on more holiday safety tips for pets.

GUIDELINES FOR FIREWORK NIGHTS

Preparation: Look for your animals, especially cats, before the fireworks start.

Secure Indoors: Close windows and curtains, keeping pets indoors with doors, windows, and pet doors securely shut.

Additional Litter Boxes: Provide extra litter boxes if your cat is not accustomed to being indoors.

Pre-Firework Meal: Feed your pet before the fireworks to help calm them.

Safe Hiding Place: Offer a safe place with blankets and bedding to mask sounds, and consider a box for cats.

Use Music or TV: Use music or TV to mute fireworks sounds, and consider specific calming music that can help them relax: https://caninelullabies.com/ or https://rescueanimalmp3.org/

Avoid Luring Pets Out: If your pet is hiding, avoid trying to lure them out, which can increase anxiety.

Distraction with Treats: Distract your pet with treats or playtime if they display nervous behaviour.

Stay Calm: Stay home with your pets, offering comfort and calmness during frightening times.

This is a difficult time of the year for any animal welfare organization. The work is more with surrendered, stray, and abandoned animals and the funds are low. Please consider donating to a reputable and financially transparent organization. Don’t forget about the rescuers and staff doing the work!

As we celebrate, let’s prioritize the safety and well-being of our furry friends. Have a blessed festive season! Next week we will look at how you can help animal welfare organizations in this difficult time.

WHEN YOU KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER!

So is die Lewe: Vergeet!

Ek is ‘n boer.

Of as advokaat in die hof, of selfs in enige vergadering.

ANIMALS 101 – HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR PETS

2

KEEPING YOUR ANIMALS SAFE DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and creating cherished memories with loved ones – including your furry companions. However, the festive period can also present unique challenges and potential pet hazards. Whether you’re traveling, hosting gatherings, or enjoying outdoor activities, ensuring your pet’s safety is essential. This time of year may be very stressfull for many animals. Here is a guide to keeping your pets safe, happy, and stress-free during the holidays.

GENERAL PREPARATIONS FOR HOLIDAY SAFETY

HEALTH AND IDENTIFICATION

  1. Ensure your pets are up-to-date on vaccinations, deworming, and tick and flea treatments.
  2. Microchip your pet and register the chip with multiple databases. Confirm the microchip information is accurate and functional before you travel.
  3. Fit your pet with a secure collar and an ID tag that includes your current contact information.
  4. Keep a recent photo of your pet on your phone in case you become separated.
  5. Consider including provisions for your pet in your will to ensure their care in unforeseen circumstances.

EMERGENCY PLANNING

  • Assemble a pet first aid kit, including items like gauze, scissors, tape, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers.
  • Write down the numbers of emergency vet services and pet poison control hotlines.
  • Ensure your pet’s vaccination record is easily accessible, especially when traveling across borders.

LEAVING YOUR PETS AT HOME

If you plan to leave your pets behind during the holidays, proper preparation is critical.

CHOOSING A PET SITTER

  1. Start searching for a pet sitter early, especially during peak holiday periods.
  2. Seek trusted referrals from friends, family, or your veterinarian.
  3. Meet potential sitters in person to observe how they interact with your pet and ask key questions, such as:
    • Do they have experience with your type of pet?
    • Have they completed training in pet behavior or first aid?
    • What is their protocol for emergencies?
  4. List your pet sitter with your vet, if you are away.

PREPARING YOUR HOME

  1. Provide clear instructions regarding your pet’s feeding, medication, and daily routine.
  2. Stock up on necessary supplies, including food, water, treats, toys, leashes, and cleaning materials.
  3. Escape-proof your home and yard to prevent accidental escapes.
  4. Leave an extra set of keys with a trusted neighbour or friend as a backup.
  5. Create a homely atmosphere by leaving a worn shirt with your scent near your pet’s bed and turning on the TV or radio occasionally.

TRAVELING WITH YOUR PET

If your pet is accompanying you on holiday, their safety and comfort should be the top priority.

Road Trip Essentials

  1. Travel Safety: Secure your pet in a crash-tested crate or safety harness. Never allow pets to ride unrestrained in the car.
  2. Pit Stops: Plan regular breaks for bathroom needs and exercise. Bring cleanup supplies, a leash, and water from home to prevent digestive upset.
  3. Packing Checklist:
    • Food and water bowls
    • Medications
    • Favorite toys, blankets, or bed for familiarity
    • A pet first aid kit
    • Vaccination records
    • Recent photo of your pet
  4. Prevent Overheating: Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle, as temperatures can rise dangerously fast, even with windows cracked.
  5. Make sure you know who are the closest vets wherever you go.

Cross-Border Travel

  • Ensure all necessary vaccination records and permits are ready.
  • Familiarize yourself with the pet regulations of your destination.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

POOL, BEACH, AND LAKE SAFETY

  1. Always supervise pets near water, as not all are strong swimmers.
  2. Invest in a pet life jacket, especially for boating or swimming in open water.
  3. Rinse your pet after swimming to remove chlorine, salt, or bacteria.
  4. Protect against sunburn with animal-safe sunscreen for breeds prone to skin sensitivity.
  5. Watch for signs of heat stroke, such as excessive panting, vomiting, or lethargy.
  6. Keep pets away from hazards like fishing hooks, toxic seaweed, and sharp shells.

HIKING AND CAMPING

  1. Ensure your pet’s ID tag is updated and attach it securely to their collar.
  2. Pack essentials like collapsible water bowls, poop bags, healthy snacks, and a safety rope.
  3. Keep your pet leashed to prevent wildlife encounters and don’t let your pet chase any wildlife.
  4. Provide shade and hydration, especially in hot weather.
  5. Use reflective gear for nighttime safety.
  6. Be aware of toxic plants and keep your pet away from unfamiliar vegetation, as well as stagnant water and water with blue-green algae.
  7. Be careful around camp fires.

BOATING

  1. Fit your pet with a life jacket and ensure they’re comfortable wearing it.
  2. Provide fresh water and shade, to prevent dehydration.
  3. Plan potty breaks onshore if needed.
  4. Avoid boating in extreme heat and keep a close eye on your pet to prevent accidents.

MANAGING HOLIDAY STRESS FOR PETS

Animals don’t get to choose where they live. They are forced to live in this human world and therefore it is our responsibility and moral duty to help them cope. We can’t always avoid stressful events but you can:

  • Observe your animal’s body language to help them cope.
  • Always have one or two safe spaces in your home that are only theirs.
  • Don’t leave fearful animals alone during such events.

HOSTING GATHERINGS

  1. Create a safe, quiet space where your pet can retreat if they feel overwhelmed.
  2. Inform guests not to feed your pets human food, as many holiday treats can be toxic.
  3. Secure doors and gates to prevent escapes as people come and go.
Fireworks

FIREWORKS AND LOUD NOISES

Here are some tips for stressful events before, during, and after:

Before – Help desensitize long before such an expected stressful event like fireworks or thunderstorms.

During – There is so much you can do during such events to help your pet cope better.

After – You need to help your animals destress after such an event too.

Avoid Leaving Pets in Vehicles

Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle, as overheating can be fatal, even with cracked windows. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise rapidly.

Time Outdoor Activities

Schedule walks in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Limit outdoor exercise on extremely hot days and keep it brief.

Protect Paw Pads

Test the pavement, ground, or road with the back of your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Choose cooler surfaces or use protective booties.

Provide Shade and Water

Never leave pets in direct sunlight. Ensure they have access to shade and offer plenty of fresh, cool drinking water to stay hydrated.

Regulate Indoor Temperature

Use air conditioning, and fans, or provide access to cooler areas like basements or darker rooms with tile floors to maintain a comfortable indoor environment.

Special Considerations for Certain Breeds

Take extra precautions for old, overweight, or snub-nosed dogs, such as Boston terriers, Pekingese, Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, and Bulldogs. Monitor dogs with heart or lung diseases closely.

Recognize Signs of Heat Stroke

Be vigilant for signs such as panting, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, rapid pulse, bright red gums, and a blue tongue or lips.

Immediate Treatment for Heat Stroke

If you suspect heat stroke, move your pet to a cool place and lower their body temperature with cool (not icy) water. Contact your veterinarian promptly.

Avoid Ice Cubes: Ice cubes are not recommended due to safety factors. Opt for safer cooling methods to protect your pet in hot weather.

LONG-TERM PET CARE CONSIDERATIONS

While holidays are temporary, responsible pet ownership requires planning for your pet’s future.

  1. Include your pets in your emergency plan, designating a trusted guardian to care for them in case of illness or an accident.
  2. Regularly update your pet’s medical and care records to ensure their needs are met, even in your absence.
  3. Include them in your Will!

The holiday season can be a wonderful time for you and your pets with careful planning and thoughtful precautions. Whether traveling, hiking, swimming, or simply enjoying time at home, prioritize their safety and comfort. By doing so, you’ll ensure this festive season is joyous and stress-free for all members of your family – furry ones included!

Please remember that this is the worst time of year for any rescue organization. While most people look forward to the fun and festivities, animal rescuers brace themselves for the unfortunate surge of surrendered, lost, and abandoned animals. Be kind to the rescuers and help them in any way you can.

If you find any animals lost, in distress, injured, or abandoned, please contact your nearest SPCA or rescue organization. Please report any cruelty to animals to the SPCA.

STUDENT-TARGETED SCAMS: HOW TO STAY SAFE AHEAD OF THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR

The festive season is a time for celebration, but for current students, and Matrics preparing to start their studies next year, it’s also a time to prepare for the year ahead. This includes registering with a higher education institution or college, securing accommodation and transport, sourcing textbooks, purchasing educational tech such as laptops, and much more.

Unfortunately, the student journey specifically has over the past few years become a lucrative new source of potential victims for scammers, which is why young people need to be especially alert to potential bad actors these next few months.

“Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, exploiting the trust and urgency often associated with online transactions and the need to secure study placement, accommodation, and so forth. Students are particularly vulnerable as they may be unfamiliar with common scams or eager to secure deals quickly, amid tough competition for limited space and resources,” says Adrian Garden, Acting Dean of Academics at The Independent Institute of Education’s Rosebank College.

He says the most important warning for prospective students, is to be aware of bogus institutions.

BOGUS INSTITUTIONS

Bogus colleges prey on the desperation of prospective students who did not secure a spot at their preferred institution of higher learning, or those with limited financial means.

Unfortunately, signing up with a bogus institution means that you will waste precious time and money, with nothing to show for your efforts after the fact. It is therefore important to ensure that, if you sign up with an institution claiming to be a legitimate private higher education institution, you check they are registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) private higher education provider register on their website, as well as with the Council for Higher Education and Training (CHE). Any credible campus must be able to show you a certificate to that effect, which details the campus, provider and qualifications.

All higher education qualifications need to be accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education – if they are not accredited, they will not appear on the certificate referred to above.

All qualifications must be registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and students should ask for the SAQA NQF identity numbers.

LOGISTICAL SCAMS

Scammers targeting students also focus on all areas of the value chain, such as offering rooms or other accommodations, transport services, second-hand textbook sales, and so forth. Whatever it is that you are looking for as a student preparing for studies next year, it is important to understand the risks and stay vigilant, especially when making online purchases or agreements.

Scammers target individuals on both sides of the transaction, leveraging common vulnerabilities. Common factors that attract them include:

  • Eager buyers: Students may rush to secure deals on textbooks, electronics, or household items at discounted rates, making them prime targets for fake listings.
  • Trusting sellers: Students selling items such as gaming consoles, laptops, or textbooks may be eager to conclude a deal, unknowingly falling victim to fraudulent buyers.
  • High-value items: Transactions involving popular items like technology, luxury accessories, or event tickets are particularly at risk.
  • Urgency and emotional stories: Scammers often create urgency or share emotional stories, such as buying for a loved one, to gain trust and pressure victims into quick decisions.
  • Controlled communication channels: Scammers move conversations to private messaging apps, where they can manipulate and control interactions.

Garden said to The Bulletin that prospective students should watch out for listings with unusually low prices or buyers willing to pay more than the asking price. Students should always trust their gut feelings about an online transaction, he says.

“Scammers often accept the price immediately or offer extra shipping or courier fees. Sellers may also present fake shipping confirmations, while buyers may provide fake payment notifications, such as SMS alerts.

“Scammers may also often use couriers not linked to reputable companies, claiming they can’t deliver or pay until additional money is sent. If there are any sudden changes to agreed terms, such as payment methods or delivery details, be aware that you may be on the receiving end of a common scam tactic.”

Garden says students are especially vulnerable to scamsters due to the urgency and limited time before the new academic year kicks off. They should however always err on the side of caution.

“Always do thorough research into the legitimacy of listings. Search the seller’s name, contact details, and product photos online to check for scams. Better to lose a deal and search for the next legitimate one, than act in haste only to have to repent at leisure.

“Also, verify the product or service, and demand secure payment options on above-board platforms.”

Perhaps the most important of all, if a handover needs to happen, choose meeting points in safe public areas, he says.

“Don’t let buyers rush or manipulate you into completing a deal. Scammers often create urgency to bypass your safeguards. Always trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, stop the interaction and block the person. And remember that there are people you can trust, who can advise you if you are unsure.

“For instance, when applying to an institution, or purchasing academic materials, student support centres at quality higher education institutions will be happy to assist and guide you.”
