Trees planted by DA in GMM

The DA in Mpumalanga is fighting Climate Change by planting trees

On Saturday 27 February 2021 the DA Provincial launch of the “plant trees to fight climate change” campaign started in Middelburg. The first tree was planted by Provincial leader Jane Sithole, Provincial Chairperson Bosman Grobler and Annerie Weber Member of Parliament serving on the Environment, Fisheries and Forestry portfolio and manager of this campaign.

The Bulletin speaks to Mariaan Chamberlain

Today, 10 March 2021, the DA GMM constituency planted trees in Emzinoni.

Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. So when we cut down trees for firewood, to make a place for infrastructure or any other reasons, the trees are not replaced and we have a lot more CO2 in the air than there should be. Therefore planting trees is one of the primary strategies to fight climate change.

It is also important that the right type of trees are planted. It is always good to plant indigenous trees in the area where you live. The trees that were planted on Saturday was  “Wit Karee, Swart Karee, Olienhout en Wit Stinkhout”. Today a few fast-growing trees were planted such as peach and birchwood.

AS the community we have all felt the effects of climate change namely increased heat, drought and insect outbreaks, declining water supplies, flooding and erosion.

The DA asks the community that where they can to get involved and plant a tree wherever they see the need.

Thank you to “Garden Terrace” for your donation of trees as well as the compost for planting the trees.

Let us all take hands and give as Govan Mbeki Municipality our contribution to fight climate change and make a difference.

This will be a continuous campaign.

Return of the Big Guns

0
Graceland was a hive of activity as the “Return of the Big Guns” was launched on Tuesday 9 March 2021.

Boxing fans are in for a treat with a six-bout tournament coming to Graceland Casino, Secunda on March 20 that features the likes of Hector “Hekkie” Budler and Xolisani “Nomeva” Ndongeni.

The tournament has been dubbed the Return of the Big Guns because the sport returns to its spiritual home in Mpumalanga after a long absence and it will also be the first time in two years that Hekkie squares up in a competitive bout.

The former WBA and IBF world light flyweight champion is involved in the main bout against Mushin Kizota of Tanzania. The diminutive pugilist will want to mark his return to the ring with a win in the 10-round International Flyweight match against the Tanzanian.

Other mouthwatering fights on the bill include: Xolisani “Nomeva” Ndogeni against Byson Gwayani of Malawi in a 10-round International Lightweight bout. In the only female bout of the day, Noxolo Makhanavu will defend her national title against Smangele Hadebe in 10 rounds. In a 10-round Mpumalanga Derby, Sam Sithole will fight Xolani Mgidi. The boxing spectacle will conclude with two four-round bouts. The first one will feature Talent Baloi against Sando Jackson of Malawi in a lightweight bout and conclude with Njabulo Merile squaring up against Nkululeko Mdletshe in a junior lightweight bout.

MEC THANDI SHONGWE said at the media launch of the “RETURN OF THE BIG GUNS TOURNAMENT” at Graceland Casino that they are excited to be part of a historic and groundbreaking Boxing Tournament in Mpumalanga

MEC Thandi Shongwe

Here is her full speach:

As the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, we are excited to be part of a historic and groundbreaking Boxing Tournament in Mpumalanga.

One year ago, South Africa looked a lot different than it does today. The country recorded its first Covid-19 case and it was the beginning of a long journey in the fight against the pandemic. Life changed as we knew it. Subsequently, all sporting activities were suspended in an effort to preserve lives and deliver a TKO victory against the virus.

Ladies and gentlemen, credit goes to the National Government for putting mechanisms in place to avoid a health crisis. It was not easy but the Government has done a sterling job in the face of the pandemic.

Joyce Kungwane, CEO of TLB

Programme Director, it is for this reason that The Return of the Big Guns Tournament is a historic and groundbreaking Tournament as a year ago a gathering of this nature looked impossible. Truth be told, we were not sure if normalcy would ever return. The boxing extravaganza was scheduled for last year but it could not take place because of the outbreak of Covid-19.

We wondered if we would ever hear the sound of the bell signalling the start of a boxing bout? We wondered if we would ever see boxers throwing punches at each other inside a ring? We shall wonder no more as we are on the cusp of witnessing a boxing tournament, although in different conditions than we are used to.

Pieter de Villiers, Graceland

The Return of the Big Guns is not just any tournament but one that features the best in the sport and it will go a long way in satisfying all the needs of boxing fans. The tournament features both professional and amateur boxers. It is also encouraging to note that the tournament has female and Mpumalanga boxers in the bill.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Return of the Big Guns is a six-bout tournament, which is headlined by an International Flyweight bout between Hector “Hekkie“ Budler (South Africa) and Mushin Kizota (Tanzania). Hekkie is a national boxing icon and it is an honour to have him take part in the tournament at an iconic venue for boxing in the province, that is, Graceland Casino in Secunda. It is also exciting to note that the tournament features a female bout between Noxolo Makhanya and Smangele Hadebe, who will be fighting for top honours in the SA title bout.

Government espouses the values of International Women’s Day, which was celebrated yesterday, of raising awareness about women’s equality in all sectors of life and celebrating their achievements. Malibongwe igama Lamakhosikazi! Malibongwe!

Introducing the boxers

The other bouts in the tournament are:

  • International Lightweight: Xolisani Nomeva Ndongeni v Byson Gwanyani (Malawi)
  • Mpumalanga Provincial Lightweight Bout: Sam Sithole v Xolani Mgidi
  • Lightweight Four-round Bout: Talent Baloi v Sando Jackson (Malawi)
  • Junior Lightweight Four-round Bout: Njabulo Merile v Nkululeko Mdletshe

It is only fitting that the return to boxing happens in Secunda, which is the spiritual home of the sport in this part of the country. Over the years, it has hosted some of the best fights and I have no doubt that what is in store on March 20 will find a place in the highlights reel of the best fights of all-time.

The Return of the Big Guns is more than a sporting tournament. It offers us a platform to restart the sport and also grow the local economy. Hosting it on our shores will provide much-needed cash injection into the local and help to keep jobs in the tourism sector, which has been adversely affected by Covid-19.

In conclusion, I want to thank the media for making time to hear what the Department had to say. The members of the Fourth Estate are integral in the success of the Return of the Big Guns Tournament. Thank you very much for showing interest in what the Department is doing to take sport in Mpumalanga to the next level.

POLICE CONTINUE TO CLAMP DOWN ON SUSPECTS WHO VANDALISE MINING INFRASTRUCTURE

NELSPRUIT: Police in Mpumalanga continue to clamp down on those who are vandalising essential infrastructure in the mines and Eskom, which has left the surrounding community without electricity.

The office of the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, issued a statement last month (February 2021), wherein 114 suspects were arrested on various charges, including trespassing, possession of suspected stolen property, contravention of the Disaster Management Regulations by failing to confine to their places of residence, as well as contravention of the Illegal Immigration Act, as in the main, these suspects are Zimbabwean as well as Mozambican Nationals.

However, these suspects continue with their illegal activities, wreaking havoc. Police are also relentless in their efforts to bring the suspects’ illegal activities to an end. At times the suspects were acting dangerously as a number of police and mine vehicles have been shot at. One police officer was robbed of her firearm.

The actions of these suspects prompted police to conduct a sting operation between Monday, 01 and Thursday, 04 March 2021, at which 79 suspects were arrested for Contravention of Critical Infrastructure Protection Act and other related cases.

The said suspects aged between 18 and 61, are alleged to have illegally entered Goedhoop mine premises in Blinkpan near Middelburg, stole items and further vandalised the mine’s infrastructure. Police confiscated 20 cars during the arrest of the suspects and they have already appeared before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court where they were granted R1000 bail each. This brings now a total of over 80 cars that were seized by police so far.

The police management has indicated that such lawlessness will not be tolerated and operations around these affected areas will continue to be intensified.

PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER ORDERS MANHUNT FOR COP-KILLERS

NELSPRUIT – The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has ordered a manhunt following a heartbreaking incident in which a 43-year-old police Sergeant was shot and killed in the evening of Friday 05 March 2021, at Gamotibidi Trust in Bushbuckridge.

Reports indicate that last night, Sergeant Dominic Monana, who was off-duty at the time, was travelling in his vehicle with a lady friend. The two were then accosted by about four armed suspects who were driving alongside and disguised as if they needed to make a conversation with him. As he opened the window of his car, the suspects pointed firearms at him, demanded his firearm and cellphones. These ruthless assailants are said to have then fired several shots at Sergeant Monana. They then pulled him and his friend out of the car, took his state firearm and two cell phones, before fleeing the scene in his vehicle.

Police as well as medical personnel were notified about the incident where Sergeant Monana was unfortunately certified dead. The member’s friend was unharmed though during the ordeal. A case of murder with an additional charge of car hijacking was opened and police immediately mobilised all the necessary resources to attend to the crime scene where a 72-Hour Activation Plan was implemented to track the suspects, hence the manhunt. The hijacked vehicle was later recovered at Violet Bank near Bushbuckridge.

General Zuma conveys his condolences to the family and further indicated that they will be given the necessary support by the management. “I am confident that the prompt implementation of the 72-Hour Activation Plan which includes experts from various environments in the police will surely yield positive results and ensure that the suspects are put behind bars,” said General Zuma.

Police appeal to anyone who may have information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact Detective Warrant Officer Mduduzi Aubrey Motubatsi at 0723203194, or call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111. Secunda Reformed Church morning service 7 March 2021

Welcome to the Sunday morning service of the Secunda Reformed Church

“How Can God Be Just And Merciful” by Anton Knoetze

Secunda Reformed Church morning service 7 March 2021

John 8:1-11 – King James Version

Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.

And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.

Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
