Misty Waters 2022 a festival of music

Misty Waters 2022 was held the past weekend at Lake Umuzi.

Time is perhaps the greatest mystery of all and is deeply wrapped up in our conscious experience of things. Why start this article with a thought on time? Because this past weekend again proved just how fragile and imperative our time on this planet is. Yet another Misty Waters Music Festival that took more than a year and a half to plan and organise has passed in a mere few days. Luckily, the conscious experience of this weekend will remain as a memory for all that attended it. And for those who were unable to attend Misty Waters or perhaps weren’t as conscious throughout it all, continue reading for a recap.

On Friday, April 29th, Misty Waters, now in its sixth year, started and festival attendees jumped on the blues train with the iconic duo MaxX & Love who kicked off the mystical weekend. These fellows sure know how to make the crowd feel Love’d, whilst putting on a perfectly in sync show. Next up was the Stupid on a Sunday band, Bad Peter and the Mystic Boer himself, Valiant Swart – the night was well on its way in becoming a Friday night to write home to.

With treffers like Sonvanger and Liefde in die Suburbs, Valiant was sure to raise the nostalgic levels at Misty Waters to an all-time high. As the mist slowly started rolling over Lake Umuzi, the fresh aromas from the food stalls started to emerge and festival goers quickly lined their stomachs with delicious Panini’s from the Panini Bistro and pizza’s from local favourite Eish restaurant before the headlining acts commenced.

Jako Meyer, lead singer from Moses Metro Man, made sure the Sasol towers trembled as he belted some of their classics, and back for some more nostalgia was 90’s rock band, Taxi Violence, returning to the Misty Waters stage for their second time. The evening ended with alternative, rock band Lost//Youth and a whole psychedelic, post punk blues experience by Double Sun.

On Saturday morning, day two of Misty Waters Music Festival, the air was filled with some regret from the previous night’s decisions, yet optimism, as festies started getting psyched for the shows of the day to start. The first band to perform was Kirkland, followed by a unique set from Court Gibson. Court incorporates the native Australian instrument, the didgeridoo, into her set along with a drum kit. As she plays all of the instruments by herself, as well as being the only vocals of the band, it truly creates for a bizarrely, interesting show.

After Court’s show, the Afrikaans rock group called Poeselig performed, and before you colour yourself offended, Poeselig is an existing Afrikaans word to describe someone chubby. Following the ironically, not-so-chubby Poeselig was the Bloemfontein band Painted Flowers and after them Lourens VD Berg.

As the day of talent ensued and the temperatures started to drop, the famous mist of Misty Waters started creeping in over the lake and instead of whiskey on the rocks, everyone opted for some Old Brown Sherry to keep them warm. Luckily not a lot was needed as Misty Waters’ veteran band, Wolfgang Marrow, graced the stage and knew exactly how to get the crowd jumping and jiving. With classics like Shamed, Extreme Sports and Lord Black Lungs, they once again proved why they keep returning to the Misty Waters stage – the organisers and crowd simply can’t get enough!

Another fan favourite and Misty Waters returning band, Tidal Waves, made a wave on the second day with their show, and the easy and relaxing atmosphere they bring to the stage couldn’t have come at a better time for what was to follow. A big crowd attractor was the melodic rock band from Cape Town, aKING, and during their final song, Catch Alight, the renowned Misty Waters sign lighting occurred. The timing couldn’t have been better!

Misty

While the crowd watched the last of the ashes from the once gleaming Misty Waters sign dissipate into the lake, the next band started to perform and like that everyone was in front of the stage once more to witness some true musical talent.  Defy Theory, Ruff Majik, and Joy Club Cassidy Cassidy ended the second day of Misty Waters in a harmonious cacophony – each bringing something rare to the stage.

On Sunday, May 1st, the last day of Misty Waters 2022, the absolute exhaustion could be felt and actually seen around the festival grounds. This is after two nights of pure rock and roll, late nights and early mornings. However, this state of inertia from the general camping festival attendees were certainly not reciprocated by the attendees who camped at Kamp Oase. The Kamp Oase campers looked fresh and ready to tackle day three head on. This is probably what you get for paying a little extra and camping in luxury at a festival

Misty

As the morning progressed it was now time for the bittereinder’s to wake up, shape up and rally for the final time. Naturally, a quick wake-and-bake session at vendors Eco Coffee and Tight Buds assisted with that. And just like that Kabaal Klankbaan launched everyone into a less sluggish state and another day of South African musical talent had begun. Following Kabaal Klankbaan was the stunning Aya Nixon, who lifted the crowd with a few head banging covers and angelic Afrikaans originals. The lively Apollo Motel with their folky sounds were up next, followed by The Fake Leather Blues Band and rock and blues band Southern Gypsey Queen.

The crowd was fortunate enough to be able to witness another Misty Waters veteran band, The Black Cat Bones, considering it was a touch and go situation for a moment with front man, Kobus de Kock, breaking three ribs in the week of Misty Waters. But as always they demonstrated what real rock and roll is about and decided to simply strap him up tightly and give us the greatest show on earth.

Misty

Prowling around the stage like true predators were returning band Hellcats and first time Misty Waters’ performers, Shadowclub. As always the two man band, Hellcats, proved you really actually don’t need more than that when your two members each have the talent of 50 rock gods in one finger. And Shadowclub transported the crowd into empyrean with front man Jacques Moolman’s other-worldly stage presence.

The last headlining act for the evening was Bittereinder, who gooi’d (as band member Peach van Pletzen would proudly say as part of his Mengels) most of their classics like Hartseer Gangster, Die dinkdansmasjien, and Hoogste Bome. And history was made on stage with Bittereinder as the head organiser of Misty Waters, Dian Rosslee, joined the band for Slechte Mense, to be the only South African to rap the Tim Beumers’ entire Dutch verse – on beat. Well done, Dian!

This was a tough act to follow, but psychedelic cowpunk band, We Kill Cowboys didn’t let that scare them. They held nothing back on stage with their anti-establishment attitude and style, and guaranteed the crowd knew who were they were. Early Monday morning was greeted by the two spunky ladies of #SOZLOL – the only girls that knows how to keep the party going into the wee hours of the morning. Festival attendees were dancing the morning away on golden oldies like Dancing Queen and U Can’t Touch This. Rumour has it you can still see some festies dancing to this day…

This article is already long enough, it’s actually surprising you made it this far. I’ll wrap it up by saying that Misty Waters 2022 really stood out as one of the best Misty Waters so far, and this is only a testament of what is to come. Each year this festival improves and brings something new to the table. It’s clear as day that the organisers put a lot of sweat, blood and some Dutch rap verses into it to ensure not only attendees, but musicians, vendors, and staff receive the most magical experience of their lives.

If you were not fortunate enough to attend this year’s Misty Waters Music Festival, be sure to clear your schedule for April 28 – May 1, 2023. You now know about this festival a year in advance.

ANC undermines oversight committees – DA claims

ANC Continues to dodge investigations of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee

The opposition parties voted for the acceptance of a motion of no confidence in the Speaker of Govan Mbeki Municipality. This motion was carried and the ANC used everything in its power not to adhere to the acceptance of the motion. A week later the EFF and ATM councillors backtracked on their motion and the motion that was already voted on and accepted was withdrawn.

It is now also alleged that there are deliberate efforts to undermine the functionality of Section 79 committees. These committees play an important role in the oversight of this municipality.

Cllr Ciska Jordaan, MAPC chairperson released the following statement to the Bulletin regarding the position of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in this regard.

anc transparency concerned municipalpublic invited to comment on annual statements mayor
Cllr Ciska Jordaan.

Following the removal of the Speaker via a motion of no confidence which served in the council on the 31st March 2022, the Democratic Alliance has been holding to our position and refusing to acknowledge the former speaker as the chairperson of the council and therefore does not attend any meetings which are called illegally, without the election of a speaker following the adopted motion.

However, on the 28th of April 2022, the ANC Executive Mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, made a public statement indicating his intention to submit a motion for the removal of the Chairperson of MPAC for not attending this illegal meeting.

Water restrictions as Rand Water demand more
Executive Mayor, Cllr Zuma

A blatant and open submission to the public of his refusal to cooperate with, and his non-attendance to the last two meetings of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (21 and 29 April 2022) only strengthens the suspicion of the DA that the ANC and its captured administration have been working against the efforts of the committee to investigate and do oversight over the municipality’s finances since its inception.

To date, it has been 5 months since the council resolved to appoint the committee with a secretary along with the election of its chairperson. Following several queries by the chairperson, this process is yet to be completed, adding to the frustrations of the Chairperson. In addition, responses from the administration following requests for information and evidence pertaining to irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure would arrive weeks after the requests have been made.

At a meeting which was earmarked to be held on the 29th of April 2022, the non-attendance of 5 ANC councillors along with the Executive Mayor, his MMCs and several directors of the municipality painted a picture of the apparent intention of the ANC to capture the biased administration of this municipality and to boycott the efforts of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee to ensure that money meant for the people, is spent on the people.

This leads one to believe that the ANC Executive Mayor and his cronies continue to dodge the investigations and the ability of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee to recover the people’s money and therefore chooses to use the political atmosphere of the council as a scapegoat.

The ANC evidently underestimates the determination and resilience of the official opposition. We do not waver at threats of removal from positions, like the greedy ANC. Where the DA is elected to serve, we remain committed to being transparent and setting a standard of excellence in serving the people of Govan Mbeki.

With this in mind, the Chairperson has written to party whips to request their assistance in encouraging members of various political parties to ensure attendance and will report the difficulties experienced in ensuring the functionality of MPAC to the provincial treasury and the Auditor General.

Along with enjoyable food and drinks, Misty Waters offers its attendees more accommodation options than other festivals. In walking distance from the festival grounds there are three luxury hotel and lodging options. Gone are the days where you have to rough it up to attend a rock festival. You can now have your cake and eat it too! The hotel options are The Merchant Hotel, Umuzi Lodge with self-catering chalets, and InnGreen Hotel that is ideal for the budget conscious and millennial traveller. These luxury options tend to fill up quickly, which is why we encourage our guests to book them early for the next Misty Waters festival happening in 2023.

Misty Waters first started in 2017 with household names performing such as Francois van Coke, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Just Jinjer, and Wonderboom, amongst others. With many successful years since then this festival has become a renowned name in the music festival industry in South Africa. This credit has been earned considering Misty Waters was the only music festival that took place in 2021 in the whole of South Africa during the unusual and curious time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

And the best part is, it’s happening right here in your town – Secunda.

ANIMALS 101 – MOVING WITH YOUR PET IN MIND

ANIMALS 101 – THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A NEW HOME AS A PET OWNER

Whether you’re a renter, looking to buy or a homeowner looking for more (or less) square footage, house hunting is no easy task, especially if you have a pet to consider. Once you find what you think might be the perfect house, you’ll need to make sure it will also be a good fit for your furry family members.

Our No.1 rule when choosing a new home for you and your family is to ensure that your pet can come along. Although there are very few exceptions, it is always sad to see people move without their pets.  Ukrainians take their pets out of a war zone, but those who move to another town, dump their pet on an already overwhelmed animal welfare system.

TIPS WHEN HOUSE HUNTING

Dr. Karen Becker & Pets Best have a few tips to help your family determine if the next place you move to will be a good fit for you and your pet.

WILL YOUR PET BE MOSTLY INDOORS OR OUT?

Will your pet be running around in the house or the yard? If the answer is indoors, choose a home with wide spaces and hallways so your pet has plenty of room to move and play. Also consider a home that has an area inside that you can “fence off”, or has a separate room where your pet can relax when guests come over.

If your pet will be an indoor/outdoor pet, keep the flooring in mind too. Although wood floors are popular, they scratch easily. From a practical standpoint, if you’re planning to redo your flooring, choose one that is resilient, stain-proof and easy to clean and disinfect if necessary. Tile, sealed concrete and sealed stone are better options than carpeting. If you prefer carpets, remember that muddy paws are part of the pet package. Try choosing a colour that won’t show a lot of wear and tear.

If your pet is mostly outdoors, make sure there’s room in the yard for a cozy dog house and plenty of shade for warm summertime weather.

DO OTHER PETS LIVE CLOSE BY?

Sometimes it’s great to have other pets live nearby so your fur family can interact and meet new friends. Nevertheless, some pets struggle with their fellow furry neighbours. Knowing your pet’s personality will help you determine if he or she needs more space.

ARE THERE PET FRIENDLY COMMUNITY FEATURES CLOSE BY?

Choosing a neighbourhood with convenient access to a veterinarian and/or outdoor spaces like walking areas and parks for pets is very important. Some things to look for in good walking paths include spacious areas with little threat from traffic, pleasant scenery and different route options.

IS THERE ENOUGH SPACE TO RUN AND PLAY?

Is the backyard big enough for you and your pet? Remember the energy levels and needs are more important than the size of the breed. Is the yard properly fenced and pet-friendly, or will you need to do some immediate work? Remember that an upgrade in housing for you doesn’t always equate to an upgraded yard for your pet. If you are moving to an apartment, make sure the square footage of your dwelling is appropriate for the type of breed you own. Apart from regular walks, they also need activities like nose work for stimulation. You can create pet-friendly spaces in your yard, such as a play area, water feature, perhaps a marking post and if you’re thinking big, a sensory garden. For people with horses, goats and other outdoor animals as pets, a house with at least an acre of land is desirable.

KEEP YOUR PET’S AGE IN MIND

Other features that may appeal to pet guardians are homes with a master bedroom on the first floor, particularly if their pets are elderly and can’t easily climb stairs and especially if they are showing signs of arthritis. Puppies can also struggle with stairs as they continue to improve their coordination.

LEGAL ASPECTS

It seems pretty simple, but many real estate agents don’t ask if potential home buyers are pet owners. Tell them, so they can focus on homes that can be more pet friendly. Some homeowners’ associations and landlords or local governments have limits on the number, size and type of pets allowed, so do your research ahead of time.

SOME OTHER PET-FRIENDLY FEATURES

  • Dog door
  • Pet washing station
  • Safe animal outdoor water feature
  • Built-ins for food dishes and animal beds
  • Cat litter closet

TIPS DURING MOVING

Moving can be stressful for people, so just imagine how anxious it can make your pets in a new environment. These challenges don’t come with a formula solution, but here are some tips that should make the experience a bit calmer for your beloved pets.

  • Prepare and overnight kit.
  • Contact your vet for records & medication if you move out of the area.
  • Keep your pets away from the action.
  • Take your pet in your vehicle.
  • Don’t let your pet out until you’ve arrived and the yard is secure.
  • Update their info at the vet, microchips, insurance, or anywhere else needed.
  • Take special precautions when moving with birds, guinea pigs and fish.
  • Treat your new lawn before you arrive, if you use chemicals treatments (which all pose a danger to your pets).

Please consider your pets as a priority when you move and if you are going to dump them on an already overwhelmed welfare system, then donate to that organization and do not get pets again!

Next week we will look specifically at a cat-related topic for the cat-guardians.

WHEN YOU KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER!
