Companies from Govan Mbeki Municipality, as well as individuals, have taken the plight of the homeless to heart.

Donations have been steadily delivered to the shelter in the Kinross Lapa. There were a few challenges when the shelter was opened but now it is getting into a working rhythm. Homeless are being picked up and brought to the shelter several times during the day.

We are now on Day 3 and the shelter is now housing about 80 people. This is almost at capacity. Other shelters are being identified but it will only be announced in due course.

Evander Petroleum and Gas, contributing all disinfectants, cleaning products and gas heaters. Light House Church for ingredients to make soup. Mental Health made a food donation. Negotiations successfully ended suicide threat

0

On Friday 27 March 2020 at about 08:00, Captain Sekgotodi (Mpumalanga DPCI Communication) received a complaint about a suicidal threat at Kabokweni – Themba Hospital as per  Kabokweni OB No. 2943 and 2945/03/2020.

On arrival at the Police Station, the Station Commander informed Captain Sekgotodi that they received a complaint about the suicide attempt and she posted members to monitor.

Captain Sekgotodi proceeded to the hospital and on arrival, she could see the victim standing outside the ward on the windowsill and threatening to commit suicide.

Captain Sekgotodi spoke to the members and the staff found on the scene for background information.

She positioned herself and proceeded with the negotiations following all the correct procedures and managed to build a relationship and trust between herself and the victim.

Captain Sekgotodi negotiated with the victim for 2 hours and safely handed him over to the Psychiatrist Doctor Mabaso.

Kinross Lapa now shelter for the homeless during the lockdown

GMM identified the Kinross Lapa as a shelter for the homeless during the 21-day lockdown.
The homeless are moved there for this period where they will receive shelter and food.
They will also be screened for health issues especially mental health issues.

GMM Executive Mayor Cllr YT Ngxonono and MMCs visited the Kinross Lapa today, 27 March 2020 to pledge solidarity and support with the homeless and vulnerable people.

GMM officials from the Department of Community Services were in full combat giving support to the Political Leadership.

The homeless people were sanitised and provided with food by the Department of Social Development. Food will be provided three times a day. Food stock levels may dwindle during this period.

The Hon Executive Mayor emphasised to the homeless that they should adhere to the strict instructions on hygiene and safety.

The Bulletin would like to appeal to everyone to lend a helping hand with this shelter. One must remember that while the homeless are on the streets they fend for themselves through scavenging or begging. This is now no longer possible as most people are indoors and all restaurants are closed.

They are also confined to the Lapa and are dependent on the donations.

The Bulletin can be contacted on 0825547589 to make arrangements to collect or accept deliveries of the donations. If not available a Whatsapp can also be sent to this number.

First COVID-19 death confirmed

“This morning we wake South Africans up with sad news that we now have our first death resulting from COVID-19,” Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement.

The death was in a hospital in the Westen Cape, just as our country joined other African nations in imposing strict curfews and shutdowns to halt the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

This morning, just hours after the country embarked on the nationwide military-patrolled lockdown, there were 927 reported confirmed cases, a more than 30 percent jump from yesterday. The minister promised to release more details later “when we announce the latest confirmed COVID-19 cases, which have increased from yesterday’s number and have tipped the 1,000 mark”.

What is South Africa doing to fight the virus?

On Thursday, 26 March, President Cyril Ramaphosa visited soldiers before they were deployed from a base in Soweto, Johannesburg.

“I send you out to go and defend our people against coronavirus,” he said, wearing a camouflage uniform.

“This is unprecedented, not only in our democracy but also in the history of our country, that we will have a lockdown for 21 days to go out and wage war against an invisible enemy, coronavirus.”

Only essential items are allowed to be sold. Alcohol and cigarette sales are banned. The Police Minister, Mr Bheki Cele urged Soth Africans to please comply to the rules set out by the government and to stay sober, stay home and be safe. Dog walking and jogging are also banned.

Goods that you will be allowed to buy during the lockdown

As we enter the Nationwide Lockdown, uncertainty creeps in. A lot of questions have been asked and a lot of the questions asked have gone unanswered.

The Department of Cooperative and Government Affairs has published new regulations which outline the ‘essential goods’ which will be allowed during South Africa’s 21-day coronavirus lockdown.

The regulations state that all retail shops and shopping malls must be closed, except where these essential goods are sold. The regulations also state that stores will be prohibited from selling any other goods.

Alcohol and cigarettes have been banned during the lockdown and police minister, Mr Bheki Cele has warned that South Africans face strict punishments for breaking these rules including a fine, or imprisonment of up to six months. Alcohol also is not allowed to be transported during the lockdown.

The police and SANDF are ready to act – to ensure that non-movement will be implemented and that banned goods are not sold. “For 21-days, please stay sober,” he said.

Here is what you can buy during the lockdown:

Food

  • Any food product – including non-alcoholic beverages. It is important to note that the sale of alcoholic beverages has been completely banned and that South Africans have also been prohibited from transporting alcohol;
  • Animal (pet food);
  • Chemicals, packaging and ancillary products used in the production of any food.

Cleaning and hygiene products

  • Toilet paper, sanitary pads, sanitary tampons, condoms;
  • Hand sanitiser, disinfectants, soap, alcohol for industrial use, household cleaning products, personal protective equipment;
  • Chemicals, packaging and ancillary products used in the production of any of the above.

Medical

  • Medical and hospital supplies, equipment and personal protective equipment;
  • Chemicals, packaging and ancillary products used in the production of any of the above.

Fuel

  • This includes gas and coal.
Gas pump with a drop of gasoline fuel.

Basic goods

  • This includes airtime and electricity. While this category is relatively vague, it will likely be guided by the essential services which are currently outlined by the gazette.
