Robbery at Palms

0

Just after 7H00 this morning a robbery occurred at Palms shopping complex in Secunda.

The owner of the business unlocked his business when a group of five men approached the shop with masks, covering their faces and gloves.

They ordered the owner to open the safe of the shop. While the owner was opening the safe, the employees’ feet were tied with shoelaces.

The group of men took the cash from the safe and one of the employees’ cell phone was also stolen.

No one was hurt during the robbery.

The group of men were allegedly escaping on the road to Evander.

No further information is available at the moment.

COVID-19: false news spreading on “Positive” case

Monday morning news started spreading about a new COVID-19 positive case in Govan Mbeki Municipality. This news proved to be false.

One source that “leaked” the information was a worker in the medical field that posted the information on Whatsapp groups. This should be treated as False or Fake news.

Fake news is punishable.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health posted new statistics on their platforms confirming the new case just to withdraw it the next morning without any explanation.

The news (fake) spread like wildfire and everybody started sending messages confirming the new case. As usual, The Bulletin reacted on the official confirmation from the Dept of Health but even that proved to be false also.

The rumour started to spread implicating Mediclinic Highveld in the process. People even pinpointed the ward that the new “patient” was in.

The Bulletin spoke to Mediclinic about the “new patient” to confirm the COVID-19 results.

Dr Stefan Smuts, Chief Clinical Officer of Mediclinic Southern Africa said in a statement to The Bulletin: “As of 1 March 2020, Mediclinic Highveld has performed 201 COVID-19 tests and can confirm that to date no patients have received a positive result. As a result, we do not have any COVID-19 related admissions.”

In strict accordance with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and National Department of Health protocols, Mediclinic Highveld has implemented the necessary measures to manage any patients testing positive with the virus and to prevent any potential transmission in our facilities.

Should any suspected COVID-19 patients require medical support from Mediclinic Highveld, these patients would be accommodated in an isolation unit, where our nursing staff are trained and equipped to manage the patient according to the level of care the illness requires.

“We continue to urge the public to take the necessary precautions by practising good hand hygiene, social distancing as well as adhering to lockdown requirements. We also encourage anyone experiencing signs and symptoms of the disease, such as shortness of breath, fever, sore throat, coughing or who believe that that they may have been exposed to the virus to contact their healthcare provider.” Concluded Dr Stefan Smuts.

The Bulletin would like to caution the new “reporters” that frequent the social media sites to refrain from spreading false news. Not only is this punishable but it also spreads unnecessary fear, panic and confusion. There are a lot of people that are trying to be first with the “news” but do not take the time to verify the facts first. Even we as journalists get it wrong sometimes. Read our post of yesterday, we reacted on official statements that were wrong and therefore reported that there was a person that tested positive for COVID-19.

Thank you to those that contacted The Bulletin to verify the facts first before sending their messages. That is how it should be done.

Stop spreading false news!

Chirwa requests special attention for the older persons at the SASSA pay points

0

The following is a press release from the office of the Municipal Manager, Gert Sibande District Municipality:

Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) Cllr Muzi Chirwa has requested all hands on deck in supporting the South African Security Agency (SASSA) to ensure safe precautions in the fight against the Corona Virus. This in the light of social grants payments for the older persons and people with disabilities which started yesterday. Chirwa made this request during the sitting of the virtual meeting of the District Command Council (DCC) on 4 May 2020.

The GSDM and other stakeholders agreed to ensure that all SASSA paypoints observe social distancing and that awareness is intensified in encouraging the beneficiaries to exercise safety measures. The DCC resolved that municipalities should provide chairs at the SASSA pay points to observe social distancing.

The DCC resolved to visit all SASSA pay points to monitor progress and to increase awareness about COVID-19 to the elderly. Cllr Chirwa visited the Badplaas post office on 5 May and described social distancing as the only armament in curbing the spread of Covid-19 pandemic. He encouraged social grant beneficiaries at the facility and shoppers in the surrounding supermarkets to always keep a distance of at least 1.5m and also to appropriately cover their faces (mouth and nose).

Local councillors and GSDM Environmental Health Practitioners joined Cllr Chirwa during the visit, which he undertook in his capacity as the Chairperson of District Covid-19 Command Council. They also provided hand sanitisers to the social grant beneficiaries and urged them to frequently wash their hands with water and soap.

The GSDM continues to support the local municipalities with deep cleansing and sanitisation of public facilities. Today a batch of sanitisers will be distributed to the local municipalities to fight against the spread of COVID-19.

The GSDM urges the public to be safe, respect the COVID-19 regulations, practise hygiene and observe social distancing.

COVID-19 Stats – The DA submits a PAIA form to force Mpumalanga Health MEC to release correct daily stats of COVID-19

There is growing discomfort with the figures and reporting of the Mpumalanga Health Department regarding the COVID-19 crises between concerned residents and journalists alike.

Political parties have been expressing their concerns for a long time but there is no improvement from the Mpumalanga Health Department.

Calls for clearer indications on the COVID-19 figures has been falling on deaf ears and are ignored.

The Department of Health placed information on their platforms informing everyone that there are two cases (of which one recovered) in Govan Mbeki Municipality, only to remove all the information this morning and to replace it with info that points to one infection only.

Response on Twitter to the COVID-19 figures of the Dept of Health (Mpumalanga)

Democratic Allaince (DA) Provincial Leader Jane Sithole has submitted a PAIA form (Promotion of Access to Information Act) to force the Mpumalanga department of health to release correct daily statistics of Covid-19.

Democratic Allaince (DA) Provincial Leader, Jane Sithole

For the last few weeks, Mpumalanga health MEC Sasekani Manzini and her department have been publishing false, inaccurate or incomplete data of Covid-19 cases to the media and on their Facebook page. This caused confusion and panic amongst the people of Mpumalanga. Some went as far as lambasting the department on social media pages.

Mpumalanga Health MEC, Sasekani Manzini

On April 2, Manzini reported that Mpumalanga had 14 positive cases of Covid-19, while later that day national reported that the province had only 12 confirmed positive cases. After seeing her mistake, Manzini immediately removed her misleading infographic that she had put up on the department’s Facebook page. On the same infographic, column seven, the MEC had indicated that Mpumalanga had zero positive cases of Covid-19.

This is incompetence at its best and distribution of fake news.

On 6 April, Manzini published that Mpumalanga had 21 positive cases of Covid-19. Four days later on April 10 Manzini reverted back and published that the province had 20 positive cases of Covid-19.

Just recently on April 30, Manzini published that Mpumalanga had 36 confirmed positive cases of Covid-19. But on May 1 she published that the positive cases were actually 35. Why is the MEC confusing the public? Why is she creating unnecessary panic among residents?

Response on Twitter to the COVID-19 figures of the Dept of Health (Mpumalanga)

Based on the above disinformation, this week the DA submitted the PAIA form “requesting that very detailed Covid-19 statistics to be released daily by the Mpumalanga Department of Health.”

Response on Twitter to the COVID-19 figures of the Dept of Health (Mpumalanga)

The DA has tried on several occasions to engage MEC Manzini, but her arrogance stands in the way of working with us all in the fight against this pandemic. She has made this about herself and she must be stopped before she endangers more lives with her ego and ignorance.

Mpumalanga is the only province where Covid-19 stats are fluctuating. While the numbers of positive cases of Covid-19 keep fluctuating back and forth, the people of Mpumalanga are worried about these inconsistencies and they are looking for answers. The DA has also written to Premier Refilwe Mtsheni-Tsipane early last month complaining about the inaccuracies; but she has not yet responded.

Response on Twitter to the COVID-19 figures of the Dept of Health (Mpumalanga)

The DA is also concerned that Mpumalanga is also the only province where the Covid-19 Provincial Central Command does not include opposition parties represented in the legislature.

They have failed to learn from the national health minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, who has gone out of his way to work with all stakeholders and opposition parties in the fight against this pandemic.

Mpumalanga has also not convened a virtual health portfolio committee meeting to report to members about Covid-19. We are also the only province that doesn’t publish the number of people that have been tested on a regular basis.

“What are they hiding?” Jane asked

The DA will always put the people of Mpumalanga first and will not stop holding irresponsible executives to account. We will continue to do this without any fear or favour.

By May 5, Mpumalanga had reported 53 positive cases of Covid-19 with 22 recoveries. Yet, once again, the figures on the official table of positive statistics did not correspond with the figures on the map. Another confusion.

So is die Lewe: Brief aan my kinders

My liewe kinders

Vreemde tye.

Jy is so ver in afstand, daar op jou eie. The times they are a’changing, soos Bob Dylan gesing het, inderdaad.

So stomp is ‘n lewe afgesluit.

In daardie laaste oomblikke; wie weet hoe alleen hulle dalk was?

Niemand is by hulle toegelaat nie. Wou hulle dalk nog iets gesê het? Was hulle bang, angstig, sonder hulle geliefdes?

‘n Finale saluut by die voetenent.  Daar is deeglik gegroet.  ‘n Lewenskringloop voltooi.

Familie en vriende ingehaak agter my.

Gelukkig was ek gespaar.

By karre, motorfietse, in die wildtuin. Foto’s van ‘n klein oopbekseuntjie, later ‘n skuifelende, kreunende ou man.

Dan sit julle musiek by.

As julle dit kyk, lag, vertel stories oor my, onthou diè kere toe julle baie kwaad was vir my oor iets wat ek verkeerd gedoen het.

Oë,   bly mooi dinge sien van my

Ore,  bly gawe dinge hoor van my

Neus  bly lekker dinge ruik van my

Mond  bly soet dinge proe van my

Hande  bly sterk dinge voel van my

Verstand  bly goeie dinge glo van my

Geheue   bly mooi dinge onthou van my

Sodat jy  Hart  kan lief bly vir my.

Ek is nie weg nie.  Ek is net daar.

Pa.

NO New COVID-19 Positive in GMM while Inaccurate Covid-19 data may lead to a premature lifting of lockdown in Mpumalanga

Department of Health’s U-Turn on COVID-19 figures.

The Department of Health, in line with the statement from DA Provincial Leader Jane Sithole, changed their figures once again!
After confirming that someone tested positive for COVID-19 they changed their infographic to read 1 case again.
Does the MEC for Health have control over her department? Do they have any control measures in place?
These are questions that need to be answered by the department!
The Bulletin will try and contact the department to get more clarity on the reporting structures

Govan Mbeki Municipality has a new case of Covid-19!

Rumours started to spread yesterday about a new positive result for COVID-19. The Bulletin received unofficial confirmation about the positive results but could not release it until it was released officially.

Rumours started to spread as the information was leaked on social media by personnel working in the medical field. The details are not yet known regarding the new patient but should become available as the day progress.

COVID-19 stats as at 20H00 on May 4, 2020
New figures for COVID-19 as released at 20H00 on May 4, 2020

Mpumalanga figures did not grow as the rest of the country leading to speculation that the figures are incorrect and misleading.

Jane Sithole, Mpumalanga Democratic Alliance leader and Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) said in a statement “Mpumalanga is the only province where the number of infections either increases or reverts to a lesser number every day. For the last four weeks, official positive cases have been fluctuating between 20 and 23. This causes confusion and panic amongst the residents.”

Jane Sithole, Mpumalanga Democratic Alliance leader and Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL)

“The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mpumalanga is concerned that government could lift lockdown too soon in the province because of fluctuating and inaccurate daily Covid-19 data.” Continued Jane in her statement, “Health MEC Sasekani Manzini and her department have on several occasions published incorrect Covid-19 stats, and the residents of Mpumalanga do not know which infection numbers to believe.”

In a scathing attack on the MEC for Health, Sasekani Manzini and her department, Sithole pointed out the irregularities and poor reporting of the department. “The MEC is also causing confusion and panic with the reported number of infections being erratic.”

Mpumalanga MEC for Health, Sasekani Manzini

So far, the provincial Department of Health has managed to screen around 487 000 people, only 11% of the Mpumalanga population and tested less than 5 000 (0.09%). By May 1, the province reported 36 positive cases with 0 deaths.

The DA is concerned that false, inaccurate or incomplete data could mean that lockdowns could be lifted too soon, which could have a catastrophic consequence for the people of Mpumalanga. It will also eliminate any gains made that the initial lockdown has had and the sacrifices that have been made will amount to nothing.

It is evident that more testing needs to be done especially now that a dental assistant in the Mapulaneng hospital in Bushbuckridge has tested positive for Covid-19.

Accurate daily stats are essential for the people of Mpumalanga to enable us to flatten the curve as it provides relevant information needed for health professionals to make informed decisions regarding the management and fighting of the virus.

The DA-run Western Cape is the only province where we have a real and accurate picture because of the high levels of testing that have taken place in the province for some time now. That’s probably the reason why many positive cases are from that province as they hide nothing.

Statistics by the DA

The Mpumalanga Department of health should be providing daily, accurate information per district regarding:

  • Positive cases
  • Recoveries
  • Deaths
  • Screening
  • Testing

Mpumalanga province does not even have a Covid-19 Provincial Central Command which includes all political parties.

The DA will write to Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane and the MEC to request accurate and daily updates as well as to request for all political parties to be included in the Provincial Central Command.

If there is no response within 7 days, the DA will escalate it to Parliament.

“It appears that the Mpumalanga Government has something to hide and they are now playing Russian Roulette with our lives” ended the statement from Jane Sithole, Mpumalanga Democratic Alliance leader and Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL).

COVID-19 cases in SA as at 20H00 on May 4, 2020

The Bulletin is awaiting statements regarding the new case in Govan Mbeki Municipality and would bring that as soon as it is available.

The new stats in Mpumalanga shows that the area of Pixley Ka Seme Municipality (Volksrust) that has 14 infections and Nkomazi Municipality (Malelane) with 19 positive cases has the highest infections rate in the Province.

The district with the most infections is Ehlanzeni District. This includes the City of Mbombela, Busbuckridge Municipality, Thaba Cheu Municipality (Lydenburg) and Nkomazi Municipality.

Three trucks collide on N12 Road leading to Ammonia spillage on road

0

The following is a press release

The N12 Road near Emalahleni became the scene of collision that involved three trucks and a sedan earlier this morning just after midnight.

The collision led to Ammonia spillage with a smell so strong that residents near Tasbett Park were severely affected.

The scene had to be taken over by the Disaster Management and it took some time before the traffic law enforcement officers could reach the scene due the strong smell from the spilt chemical.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the side swipe crash occurred when one of the trucks was attempting to overtake another truck.

The third truck involved collided into one of the trucks. Another sedan was also involved.

One of the trucks was transporting energy drinks. The ammonia was further leaked into the drain and this subsequently affected households and many residents woke up to the unbearable smell.

Although the smell has subsided, it still lingers on. The emergency personnel are still working at the scene.

No injuries were reported but the occupants of the sedan are currently receiving treatment for the effects of the Ammonia inhalation.

The MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms Gabisile Shabalala visited the scene earlier today.

Shabalala has called on truck drivers to always ensure that they use the road safely.

“Truck drivers and all those involved in trucking business must play their part towards road safety by among others ensuring drivers rest sufficiently along the way,” she said.

She encouraged to obey the rules and also plan their journeys well in advance as part of dealing with fatigue.

Meanwhile the Executive Mayor for Emalahleni Local Municipality Cllr Lina Malatji upon receiving the news arranged transport for residents who stranded when the incident occurred.
