Open letter to the Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality

In an open letter released on social media today, DA activist, Terry-Lee Kleynhans has called out the Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Thandi Ngxonono.

The Bulletin spoke to Terry-Lee about the letter to find out what the motivation behind the letter was.

“The motivation behind the letter was when I found myself speaking to numerous people on a daily basis about them losing their appliances because the electricity is being switched on and off constantly,” said Terry-Lee.

She continued: “The second reason is because a concerned mother phoned me crying. The mother said that while her child was doing an online test on their desktop computer, the power was cut and her child could not submit the test.”

This is not the first time The Bulletin has heard about appliances burning out and children falling behind in their schoolwork because of the electricity cuts.

“These are obstacles that residents from Bethal, Emzinoni and Embalenhle are facing on a daily basis. Even though Govan Mbeki Municipality has felt that they have given input and that they have produced some sort of solution, they clearly have not.” Terry-Lee continued: Another concern is that their power goes on and off more that 10 times a day. This is putting a lot of strain on the system and also on appliances.”

This is the open letter addressed to the executive mayor:

In an Open letter to EXECUTIVE MAYOR THANDI NGXONONO of Govan Mbeki Municipality

In the midst of a Global Pandemic, residents of Govan Mbeki have found themselves in numerous levels of uncertainty. Not only are they taking upon them a change in lifestyle or concerns due to lack of income they are now facing continues electricity interruptions.

Residents of Bethal, Emzinoni and Embalenhle have been bombarded with load shedding over the past 8 weeks. Which started as 4 hours a day has escalated to 12 hours a day without power. This after our President clearly stated no person will face load shedding during the lockdown. Do we find ourselves in a society and political structure where an Executive Mayor of a Municipality outranks the President of the country? This is troubling, even more so I find it concerning that due to your lack of leadership and commitment to settling GMMs debt you are embarking on only short-term solutions such as disconnecting illegal connections. Should this not have fallen part of your term strategies from day one as Mayor?

Your lack of commitment to your title has left parents seeking for more time to do their children’s online education, grasping for a moment to get their own work done and leaving them with no form of sure deadlines due to inconsistent load shedding. You have managed to single handily target thousands of households and forced them to take alternative and unorthodox measures to ensure they stay afloat.

If it were the residents that were at the mainstream of your priorities you would have been interacting with the community on available platforms, instead you are busy with gerrymandering for the upcoming 2021 Local Elections. Yet the only time we see you in the media is when you are accepting donations or launching some new project that never gets completed with funds that are non-existent.

The time to take action was 8 weeks ago when a pandemic started and communities were left in the dark with what the future holds and now, they find this to be a literal notion too. Step out of your luxurious car and answer the people of Govan Mbeki Municipality, follow through and take measures to rectify what you and your managers have allowed over the past 2 years. If not, do the noble thing and step down so we can appoint a Mayor with more backbone than a jellyfish. The residents deserve this.

Regards

Terry-Lee Kleynhans

Let us hope that the residents call for help will be heard now.

Scripture is from 2 Kings 4: 1-7

Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.

Mpumalanga Police have launched a manhunt following the discovery of a foetus in a dumping site at Siyabuswa near Kwamhlanga on Wednesday, 13 May.

The report indicates that two employees from Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality, who are responsible for waste management, were busy with their routine duties at the dumping site when they noticed a plastic bag which was strangely wrapped. They opened the bag and found a foetus inside and swiftly reported the matter to the police.

The Provincial Commissioner has strongly condemned the incident and has urged members of the public to provide police with information that can help in arresting the perpetrator of this crime.  “This is yet another sad story where an innocent life was cut short possibly by the biological mother before it could even begin. These kinds of incidents are heart-breaking. Mothers who are going through any challenges are encouraged to seek help at relevant institutions so as to prevent such incidents,” said General Zuma.

Police urge anyone with information that can assist in arresting the suspect who committed this heinous act to call 10111 or 0860010111. Alternatively, they can provide any crime related information by downloading MYSAPSAPP to anonymously send valuable information to police. Their information will be treated with strictest of confidence.

Police arrest a man for selling liquor and cigarettes during lockdown

0

Police in Mpumalanga are calling on the community to adhere to the lockdown regulations and desist from conducting businesses that are not permitted during this period.

Several people have been arrested for conducting such businesses which are outside the scope of lockdown regulations and the police will surely continue to enforce the law during this period.

A 27-year-old man was not spared as he was arrested on Tuesday, 12 May, at Mmametlhake for selling liquor and cigarettes worth about R60 000.

According to the report, police received information about a suspect who was trading on non-essential goods at his business premises during the period of lockdown.

They did not waste time but swiftly followed up on the information and upon arrival at the said premises, found the man trading and arrested him immediately. The man was given a R6000 fine.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma has applauded members of the public for providing law enforcement officers with information which led to the arrest of the suspect. He has also applauded the police for their hard work in ensuring that they enforce the law as expected. The General has also reiterated the call by authorities for people to stop taking chances and abide by the law at all times. Law Enforcement Agencies will continue to work tirelessly to eliminate and prevent all criminal activities.

Mpumalanga command centre closed after staffer tests positive for Covid-19

During the last two weeks the COVID-19 positive cases have increased immensely. The virus has been well contained until this week when the Mpumalanga Provincial Command Centre closed down.

One of the staff members tested positive and the whole team was ordered into self-isolation.

Buks Viljoen, a News24 Correspondent wrote the following article:

The Mpumalanga provincial command centre closed as a matter of urgency on Tuesday after one of its staff members, who had attended a meeting, tested positive for the coronavirus.

The staffer went for Covid-19 screening and tested positive.

The entire command team, which attended the meeting in the Disaster Management Centre, was ordered to go into self-isolation and had to undergo Covid-19 testing, said Sibongile Mpolweni, the spokesperson for Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane.

The premier as well as Sindi Xulu, the province’s director-general, both tested negative for the virus.

“All other staff, including Lieutenant-General Mondli Zuma the provincial police commissioner of Mpumalanga, is currently in isolation,” said Mpolweni.

Mtshweni-Tsipane said all officials, who were in contact with the infected staff member, have been traced and tested, adding the results would be available on Friday.

“We are determined to make sure that all our officials are safe, hence the decision to temporarily close the command centre,” she added.

Teams from the Department of Health were brought in to deep-clean and fumigate the building, Mpolweni said.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi confirmed they were still waiting on Zuma’s results, saying he himself was also currently self-isolating while waiting for his own test results.

The following press statement was also released:

The Provincial Command Centre has since been shut following one of the officials testing positive for COVID19.

All officials who attended the meetings at the Provincial Disaster Management Centre in Mbombela were tested immediately and have been ordered to self-isolate as from Tuesday (May 13th, 2020) as they await their results.

The Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane and the Director General, Ms Sindi Xulu also undertook the tests and their results were negative.

“We are determined to make sure that all our officials are safe, hence the decision to close the command centre temporarily for an intensive fumigation,” said the Premier.

She added that tracing of all people that came into contact with the affected official has been done and testing is underway.

The Premier has encouraged members of the public not to resist undergoing the test as a crucial pillar to save their lives and their loved ones.

“When I took the test, I was nervous myself. It was short, convenient and less painful. The doctor made sure I was relaxed and took the samples, so people must not be scared to test when they present the symptoms or have been in contact with someone who is infected,” said the Premier.

The co-chairpersons of the Command Center, Mpumalanga SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lt-General Mondli Zuma commended the officials for setting a good example by participating in the testing process. “We have observed with concern the reluctance of some of our communities to be tested during our meetings, for fear of stigmatization.  Some end up absconding quarantine procedures.  To self-isolate or to be quarantined is not a punishment but to help those who tested positive and to curb the rising number of infections,” said Lt General Zuma.

Provincial Government will continue to educate the public about the benefits of screening and testing for coronavirus.
