So is die Lewe: Jou laaste woorde

0

Titel is “Jou laaste woorde”

Voorbeelde hiervan is die komediant Grouco Marx: “This is not a way to live.” Die digter Emily Dickenson: “I must go in. The mist is coming up.” Nostradamus, die toekomsvoorspeller: “At sunrise tomorrow you won’t find me alive.” Marie Antoinette: “Pardon me sir, I meant not to do it.” Bob Marley: ”Money can’t buy life.” En dan die droë humor van Sir Winston Churchill: “I’m bored with it all.”

Vader, in U hande gee ek my gees oor.

Soos Groucho Marx gesê het: “This is no way to live.”

lewe
Groucho Marx – American comedian

Wanneer iemand oombliklik weggaan, soos na Elvis Presley se laaste konsert gesê is nadat hy hortend en swetend, uitgeput, die lied Can’t help falling in love with you vir oulaas voor sy dood gesing het: “Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.” Soos die ou spreekwoord lui: “When an old person dies, a library burns to the ground.”

Elvis, Can’t help falling in love with you

Baie mense worstel hiermee. Daar is deesdae ‘n televisiereeks oor ‘n sg.

Ek is bang.”

‘n Blikstem met ‘n gerekenariseerde damesintonasie het my emosieloos geantwoord: “The number you have dialled, does not exist.” Punt. Geen “sorry” of “unfortunately” nie. Dis uitgewis.

It does not exist.

Fashion Friday and those cool summer nights

0

Deciding what to wear on those cool summer nights can be a frustrating experience especially in the Highveld. And that’s why we are talking about cool winter fashion in the summer in this week’s Fashion Friday.

Lize and I recently experienced that feeling of frustration of what to wear.

Because we are all so used to living through four seasons a day in the Highveld, we always either have an extra jersey or jacket in our cars or on our person.

There are easy ways to mitigate this problem and that is why we decided to write this article.

Light stockings with shorts

Light stockings with a pair of shorts can be one of the easiest and fashionable ways to keep warm during the cool nights.

The fun part about a pair of stockings is that they come in different colours, with shapes, fun designs and go with anything if styled right.

Don’t be scared to pair them with some Vellies (like I did), sneakers or high heels as long as you are comfortable, that is all that matters.

Fashion Friday and those cool Summer nights

Vests

Vests are fun and easy to pair with anything.

A nice thermal vest can be pulled off as a normal jersey or you can through a T-Shirt or button-down over your vest to create a fun and funky look.

Vests are comfy and they keep you warm, whereas a jersey or a jacket might be just too hot.

Light skirts

Light skirts are fun to wear.

Pairing a light skirt with a chunky sweater and some boots gives you that edge.

And as the rule goes: If you show cleavage show less leg and vice versa.

Chunky sweaters

A lot of chunky sweaters aren’t always excruciatingly warm and uncomfortable.

For those cool summer nights these can be perfect to pair with a light skirt or shorts.

Some of the chunky sweaters you find are nice and breathable that will ensure that you do not freeze to death but also not overheat.

Fashion Friday and those cool Summer nights

Shoes

If you are not a fan of high heels there are many more options you can choose from in your cupboard.

From a short boot to Vellies to sneakers, your options are limitless.

Fashion Friday and those cool Summer nights

You might ask if you must go buy some of these items and the answer is no!

Take some time to go through your cupboard and you’ll find some hidden gems that you might have forgotten about.

You can even check your mum’s closet or organise a day with your friends and swap out some clothes! That way you all save money and maybe you can get your hands on that one item that you’ve eyed for a while…

Sasol’s 2030 Roadmap for Climate Change

0

In a virtual media roundtable, Sasol engaged and gave feedback on the release of their recent Sasol Limited Climate Change Report.

The report states the following: “Sasol’s 2030 roadmap is based on an ambition for a significantly transformed energy profile in South Africa by 2050. Delivering on our 2030 target through our roadmap is a key milestone for greater reductions into the future and to building the long-term resilience of our operations. Our three-pillar emission reduction framework forms the basis for us to transition.”

Sasol’s three-pillar emission reduction framework is based on: Reduce Emissions, Transform Operations and Shift the Portfolio.

Sasol’s 2030 Roadmap for Climate Change
Source: https://www.sasol.com/sites/default/files/financial_reports/SASOL%20CCR_2020_25%20August%2008h30_MN%20Lowres.pdf

Some key points in the Climate Change Report are:

  • In the report Sasol states that they are “keen to play a leadership role in South Africa’s energy transition.”
  • A “Roadmap for achieving our 2030 target” is set out. In 2019, the target was set to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by at least 10% for South African operations off their 2017 target of 63,9Mt CO2e. This target does not align with the Paris Agreement but is “based on the probability of success of potential reduction opportunities, associated risks, economic viability and balance sheet capability to finance these activities”. Sasol also said that it is “in the process of defining a 2050 reduction ambition and roadmap”. This will be communicated at the Capital Markets Day in 2021. (The Paris Agreement is explained later in this article.)
  • This is Sasol’s plan to reduce emissions: energy and process efficiency, the introduction of renewable energy, asset disposals and the replacement of coal with natural gas as a feedstock for the liquid fuel business.
  • Sasol is relying on the notion that by 2030 natural gas resources and infrastructure will be available.
  • Sasol’s scope 3 emissions were assessed and in 2019 they estimated emissions at 42,3Mt CO2e or 39% of total GHG emissions.

Although there was a reduction of emissions during the national lockdown, Sasol said that it can be reversed once operations return to full capacity after the lockdown.

During an interview with Sarushen Pillay, Vice President: Environmental Sustainability and Shamini Harrington, Vice President: Climate Change, I asked them key questions that align with the report released.

  1. In the Sasol of the future, what are the strategic shifts planned in terms of environmental issues specifically for the South African operating entities regarding Sasol’s reduction of carbon footprint.

Shamini answered:

Sasol’s 2030 Roadmap for Climate Change
Shamini Harrington, Vice President: Climate Change

“For future Sasol we reset our strategy, there were a number of areas to look at. Of course, now the financial situation, looking at the low oil price post Covid but also at the heart of this was Climate Change and the impact of Climate Change in the future in terms of risks related to regulatory high carbon pricing.

What we did was reanalyse our previous structure and we looked at how robust this strategy is in a Paris aligned temperature goal.

What we found was that our coal value chain, specifically, was not resilient and we found that the earnings impact was quite large, greater than 50 % on the Paris Agreement aligned goal.

We looked at how we could update our strategy in order to incorporate a reduction target, which is the 2030 target, at least 10% reduction of our 2017 baseline.

Over and above working towards the 2030 target, we have also put in place a 2050 production target as well as a 2050 Roadmap.

That is framed against our three-pillar reduction framework.

By doing that the key opportunities for future Sasol is renewable energy deployment, growing that sector and utilising the power as well as looking at gas at an alternative feedstock for ourselves and also the benefit of gas in the South African economy.

Also, the big opportunity around green hydrogen and positioning for this big opportunity globally and marketing ourselves as a producer of green hydrogen.”

Sarushen jumped in at this point and explained more about green hydrogen:

Sasol’s 2030 Roadmap for Climate Change
Sarushen Pillay, Vice President: Environmental Sustainability

“The opportunity for green hydrogen starts with our journey on renewables. We see significant potential to take with South Africa’s renewable resources.

Wind and solar resources lay a foundation for a transition for us to become a producer in green hydrogen.

The 600MW of renewable energy that we recently procured, was the first step. Part of that, we will be looking for two imbedded generation projects; 1 in Secunda and 1 in Sasolburg. We see that as a springboard to become a producer in green hydrogen.

The key to unlocking green hydrogen is for renewable energy costs to decrease and secondly for the actual cost of the electroliers to decrease.

2. In terms of allocated carbon credits, is Sasol aiming to buy out more carbon credits from other companies or does Sasol intend to reduce their current credits in the long term?

(A carbon credit is a permit that allows the company that holds it to emit a certain quantity of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. One credit permits the emission of a mass equal to one ton of carbon dioxide.)

READ ALSO: DA retains ward with landslide victory

Shamini:

“What we are trying to do is to apply a carbon offset strategy. The carbon offset strategy we have in place is to reduce through carbon credits and procuring through other players in the market.

We are also looking at codeveloping projects to generate credits with experienced project developers. In the long term we are looking in developing our own projects.

We apply a carbon management hierarchy and that is focussing on reducing emissions on our scope, our scope 1 and scope 2 emissions.

Now, in the South African economy we have what is called the Carbon Tax Act. This allows for carbon offsetting to a certain percentage. We are utilising, for the next for years, the mechanism provided by government in order to offset our carbon emissions related to the Carbon Tax Act.

We do see it changing after time but we do see it changing over time to address our residual emissions after mitigation.

3. What technologies are being looked at to reduce Sasol’s carbon footprint?

Sarushen:

“There are a number of technology areas that we considering but we really see the potential for new technology breakthroughs post the 2030 timeframe.

I’ll list a few areas where we see quite significant promise.

The first is the combination of renewable energy plus energy storage. We want to try maximise the usage of renewable energy, as we see those cost dropping.

We also see energy storage costs significantly dropping and at the scale at which renewable energy is being stored, we are seeing plants that up to a 100 MW scale globally and see Sasol to jump on that and take advantage. That will maximise our intake of renewable energy.

The second area is CO2e utilisation. At Secunda and Sasolburg we produce concentrated streams of CO2. We capture these streams and recurrently release them but we have some of the largest CO2 capture plants globally.

We are looking at converting this CO2 into fuels and other chemical products, like fertilisers and this is really the area where we se potential.

There is also quite an interest globally to combine CO2 and green hydrogen and convert it into jet fuel. The technology that is used to do that is called Ficher-Tropsch technology and Sasol is the world leader in this technology.

The last technology area we are looking at and see big promises is green hydrogen. The production of hydrogen in Secunda is responsible for half of our emissions and if we can get green hydrogen that would go a long way in reducing our emissions in Secunda.

4. Please explain the Paris Agreement, should someone not be familiar with the agreement.

Shamini:

“The Paris Agreement is a global agreement that aims to limit temperature increases to well below 2 Degrees Celsius and pushing to efforts for 1.5 Degrees efforts.

It is a global agreement that which is enshrined within the United Nations (UN) framework convention on Climate Change. And what that is, is the authority in terms of managing Climate Change at a global level.

The Paris Agreement brings all of the parties to the UN together (192 parties) and asked them to sign up and conform to the requirements of keeping temperature to well below 2 Degrees Celsius.

To support that there are different scientific bodies, the key body is the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change.

What they detail at a global level is what the emission reduction target should be for 2030, 2050 and moving toward 2100.

An interesting thing about the Paris Agreement is because it is enshrined in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is that it actually looks at how different parties should play a role.

Not every country has the same development status and circumstances. Their expectation in the Paris Agreement is that developed countries must lead the way and they must take on more aggressive targets while developing countries must also take action but there is recognition that they might be on a different trajectory.

In the South African context that means that we are a developing country. Even though we are a developing country, we do have large emissions and there is a need for us to act. We cannot ignore the important issues of social upliftment, poverty and alleviation, unemployment, economic growth and sustainable growth.

So, by carving out our targets and the approaches we take, these nuances and these key challenges must be factored in, in terms of timing and reduction targets put in place because climate change is everything to do about economics and development issues and less about environmental.”

Murderer sentenced to life imprisonment

POLICE MANAGEMENT ELATED OVER HEFTY SENTENCE HANDED DOWN TO MURDERER

NELSPRUIT – The police management in Mpumalanga are elated over a hefty sentence handed down by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court sitting in Middelburg to a 29-year-old man who killed his ex-girlfriend as well as two little girls.

This unpalatable incident occurred at Grootvlei near Embalenhle in 2013 at which the murderer, Buti Simon Mduduzi Dlamini became violent after receiving news that the abusive relationship he had subjected his 19-year-old then-girlfriend, Xolisile Josephine Mokoena, has come to an end. He (Dlamini) did not accept the fact that their relationship was over but rather orchestrated an evil plan to pay revenge by wiping off her entire family. At the time, Xolisile was staying with her uncle at his house, together with her niece and her cousin.

The Court heard that on 05 October 2013, Dlamini bought petrol which he stored in a portable container and waited for Xolisile’s family to go to sleep. On that sad day, a neighbour who was a minor came to sleep over as she would occasionally do whenever her mom was working the night shift. He (Dlamini) then broke into the house at night, sprinkled petrol over his ex-girlfriend as well as over the two young girls (the niece and the neighbour) before setting them alight.

He then torched the whole house and fled the scene. The uncle, as well as the cousin, were woken up by smoke and flames that engulfed the house. They tried to rescue the three girls but Mbali Maria Mokoena, aged 14 and Mamokete Carolina Mofokeng, aged 11 could not make it, meanwhile, Xolisile was rescued, taken to Heidelberg hospital, later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital where she, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries.

The police were notified of the incident and a case was opened with three counts of murder, two attempted murder as well as arson. While conducting their investigation, police finally made a breakthrough when they sniffed Dlamini out of his hiding place and arrested him in September last year in the Free State Province. On 05 November 2020, Dlamini was convicted by the Court hence his sentencing yesterday.

He was sentenced as follows:

Count 01 – murder, life imprisonment.

Count 02 – murder, life imprisonment.

Count 03 – murder, also life imprisonment.

Count 04 – attempted murder, eight (08) years imprisonment.

Count 05 – attempted murder, eight (08) years imprisonment.

Count 06 – arson, five (05) years imprisonment.

The accused was also found to be unfit to possess a firearm. When handing down the sentence to the convicted murderer, Judge Thando Mankge indicated that Count 04, 05 and 06 will run concurrently with the three life sentences.

The leadership of the police in the province has welcomed the sentence, indicating that it will bring closure to the families of victims. They (management) also praised the hard work displayed by the team of Detectives, the Prosecution as well as the Judiciary for working as a collaborative on this matter.

The steady flow continued at Laerskool Kruinpark. Cold weather and rain could also have influenced the voter patterns.

“We would like to congratulate Terry-Lee on her election as a councillor to Govan Mbeki Municipality,” said Mariaan Chamberlain, Constituency Chairperson for GMM, “The DA put a lot of effort into this by-election to ensure that the residents of ward 30 get the best possible candidate for their ward.”

“We now have an extra voice in councill!” she concluded.

The by-elections were held under strict new COVID-19 protocols aimed at ensuring the safety of voters, election staff, party agents, observers and other stakeholders. These included implementing strict social distancing practices outside and inside voting stations along with the use of hand sanitisers as voters entered and exited the voting station.

The day was not without incident as the EFF tried to intimidate the DA into moving their party branding to make space for the EFF. This did not work as the DA stood their ground. The EFF had to be content with the space that was left.

What to drink when quitting or taking a break from drinking

0

Taking a break from drinking or doing a “Dry Month Challenge” can be a good thing for your mental and physical health but sometimes you still might crave that beer on a Saturday at a braai or the Mojito when you go out with the girls.

Threading? It’s no massive threat!

In this month’s lucky packet surprise video Ané and I tried threading, both for the first time, to experience this not-so-foreign-anymore beauty regimen.

Threading is an ancient method of hair removal that originated in Iran, India, China and Central Asia.

It involves a professional using a thin cotton or polyester thread, which is doubled up and then twisted, to remove unwanted hair. The thread is rolled over areas with unwanted hair to pluck it out at the follicle level (Goodman, 2019).

Threading allows for a much more defined and natural look since it’s so targeted.

When it comes down to it, however, the way you decide to sculpt your brows is really about personal preference.

Neither of us had ever had threading done and this passing Saturday the opportunity arose to have our eyebrows threaded.

We’re here to bust those myths and corroborate the truths about threading.

The one thing everyone is most worried about; Does it hurt?

Honestly, it depends on who you ask. Some people have told me in the past that threading hurts A LOT! Whilst others maintain that it’s definitely less painful than waxing. Discomfort from waxing is usually due to the tugging and pulling of the skin.

Threading on the other hand just tugs out the hair and doesn’t touch the skin.

As you can see in the video of both Ané and I being threaded, it’s actually quite painless.

WATCH HERE: Threading saam L & A

Naturally, there’s the odd hair that resists the thread, but it’s not any worse than plucking or waxing.

Along with the threading both of us had our eyebrows and eyelashes tinted.

Being dark haired, my tinting was much less visible afterwards than Ané’s.

Being dark haired, my tinting was much less visible afterwards than Ané’s.

Ané is rather fair and blonde, but with the correct colour applied, she looked beautiful and natural afterwards. Due to her having blue eyes, the girl performing the tint decided on a blue black for Ané’s eyelashes and it made her blue eyes pop even more!

Threading? It’s no threat!
One can clearly see the difference in Ané’s before and after shots.

By choosing the correct colour of tint for your shade, even people with fair, blonde hair and features can give tint a try!

Francesca Coetzer, or as her friends call her Franky, is an accredited permanent make-up artist who is busy obtaining diploma’s in threading, tinting, waxing and anything else that you can think of that removes hair from your body. She was in Secunda on Saturday to test her skills on some willing volunteers.

Bethal DBV – Jakkie Louw tree op by Stoepstories

SPCA Bethal, Standard Bank, Rekening nommer 031033253, Tak kode 052544.

Daar is ook ‘n “Adopt a kennel” program.

Reduction of water supply to three municipalities due to non-payment

The financial management inaptitude of Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) is rearing its ugly head again.

GMM did not honour its obligations and agreements with Rand Water once again. Rand Water placed a statement on their website regarding the reductions.

GMM has recently been placed under administration in terms of section 139(1)(b) of the Constitution. An administrator is yet to be appointed.

Here is the statement that Rand Water posted on their Facebook page:

Rand Water has formally informed three of its municipal customers of its intention to reduce water pressure due to the non-payment for services rendered.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality in Gauteng and two municipalities in Mpumalanga namely the Victor Khanye and the Govan Mbeki Local Municipalities will face these this credit control measures.

Visit Rand Water HERE

The water pressure to the Emfuleni Local Municipality will be reduced by 20-percent. The Municipality includes areas such as Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Evaton and Sebokeng. The arrear amount due to Rand Water by the Emfuleni Local Municipality is R 994 million. The total outstanding amount due by the Emfuleni Local Municipality is R 1.1 billion.

The water pressure to the Victor Khanye Municipality will be reduced by 20-percent. The Municipality includes areas such Delmas, Botleng, Eloff and Sundra. The arrear amount due to Rand Water by the Victor Khanye Local Municipality is R 185 million. The total amount due by the Victor Khanye Local Municipality is R 194 million.

The water pressure to the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality will be reduced by 20-percent. The Municipality includes areas such as Bethal, Embalenhle, Leandra and Kinross. The arrear amount due to Rand Water by the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality is R 314 million. The total amount due by the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality is R 351 million.

In all three of these matters, the municipalities have failed to honour the agreements made to settle the outstanding amounts due to Rand Water. Rand Water will now implement these credit control measures (reductions in the water supply) to compel the Municipalities to meet their obligations to the settle amounts due to for water services rendered.

Rand Water has informed the Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation in writing of its intention to implement the credit control measures, as well as the MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and Co-operative Governance in Gauteng and the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga. The Department of the National Treasury has also been informed.

Rand Water will implement the credit control measures on Monday, 9 November 2020.

Residents should expect water pressure drops as the reservoir levels start to drop due to the water supply reductions.
