LEKWA MAYOR NARROWLY ESCAPE DEATH AFTER GUNSHOTS MISSED HIM

Standerton – The SAPS can confirm an incident that reportedly occurred at Standerton (Lekwa) on the evening of Wednesday 17 May 2023. Councilor Delani Thabethe, the mayor of Lekwa local municipality in Mpumalanga, narrowly escaped an attempt on his life when two gunmen shot at him outside his home in Standerton on Wednesday night.

As Delani Thabethe left his home two unknown gunmen started shooting at him as they tried to ambush him. He was fortunate to escape unharmed back into his house as the gunmen fled on foot.

The municipality will now look into increasing security for Delani Thabethe after a report from the police.

A case of attempted murder is currently under investigation. The victim was reportedly unharmed during the incident and no one has been arrested so far.

A team of investigators has been assembled under the leadership of the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela.
