Kiara Krishnapersadh: A creative spirit ready to spread her wings beyond Oosterland

For Hoërskool Oosterland matriculant Kiara Krishnapersadh, the end of her school career marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, one in which her ambitions, creativity and individuality will continue to shape her journey.

As a member of the Class of 2026, Kiara is preparing to exchange familiar school corridors for new opportunities. Although she hopes to pursue a career in law, she has no intention of leaving behind the artistic passion that has always been part of her identity.

Describing her matric year in three words, Kiara chose “adventurous, captivating and phenomenally classy”. It was a year filled with milestones, final school events and memories, but also one that challenged her to step beyond her comfort zone.

Leaving behind the daily routine of school and the friends she has grown accustomed to will undoubtedly be bittersweet.

“There is excitement because there is a whole new world waiting for us,” she says, although she admits that she will miss the familiar faces, shared laughter and everyday moments that made school life special.

One occasion that will remain particularly memorable is her matric farewell. With a creative eye and a perfectionist’s approach, Kiara wanted every element of her appearance to come together to create something meaningful.

Her choice of a striking red dress, complemented by dramatic white wings, was far from an ordinary farewell outfit. The colours carried personal significance, with red representing confidence, strength and individuality, while the white wings symbolised freedom, possibilities and new beginnings.

Her vintage-inspired curls, elegant make-up and carefully selected accessories completed the look.

For Kiara, the outfit was an opportunity to express herself artistically rather than simply make a fashion statement.

The preparations did not go entirely according to plan, however. A mix-up involving the timing and venue caused some last-minute panic, something particularly challenging for someone who likes having every detail organised. Looking back, she can laugh about the experience.

The moment she finally saw the completed look in the mirror was an emotional one.

Although she describes herself as an introvert who is not naturally comfortable being the centre of attention, the experience allowed her to see herself differently.

“I felt beautiful, but it was more than that. I felt confident,” she recalls.

Her family also played an important role in making the occasion memorable. Her father helped her get ready, while her mother and sister stood alongside her throughout the preparations.

Although she was the one wearing the dress, Kiara says reaching that special moment was very much a family experience.

As she looks beyond matric, her sights are set on Cape Town, where she hopes to pursue an LLB degree and eventually specialise in criminal law.

The prospect of leaving home and starting afresh brings both excitement and a little uncertainty, but she is looking forward to the independence, personal growth and challenges that lie ahead.

While law may become her profession, creativity will remain an important part of her life.

“Law might become my career, but art will always be one of my languages,” she says.

As Kiara and her fellow matriculants prepare to close their Oosterland chapter, she has a message for those embarking on the next stage of their lives: their journeys do not have to resemble anyone else’s to be meaningful.

For Kiara, the red dress and white wings perfectly reflected this moment in her life – proud of the person she has become, grateful for the memories behind her and ready to embrace the freedom and opportunities that await.
