Registrations to vote will be open this weekend, 18 and 19 September.
Never before had our municipal elections been so controversial and under so much pressure as this year’s municipal elections.
Not only do the demarcation board shift the ward boundaries for every election, but Covid also had its hand to play in the approaching elections.
Political parties are contesting some issues in court and some political parties did not submit all their lists in time.
It is very important to have your address correctly registered at the IEC as you will only be allowed to vote in the ward that you are residing in.
This weekend, 18 and 19 September will be the last chance to correct your registration details or to register if you did not do so before.
The IEC’s national spokesperson, Kate Bapela, said that registration would run from 8 pm to 5 pm on both days and that those registering must present a South African bar-coded identity document, a smart ID card or a temporary ID certificate.
“If you are an existing voter whose personal information has changed, it is compulsory to update or amend your details before voting day. This can either be done online or at the voting/registration stations in your area.”
“On Monday, 01 November 2021 South Africa will hold local government elections in towns and cities across the country. You can only vote on Election Day if you are correctly Registered to Vote, at your correct voting station.” Said Mariaan Chamberlain, DA Councillor in Govan Mbeki Municipality and also Constituency Chairperson for GMM.
She also referred the voters to https://check.da.org.za/ to check their details.
You will need the following to register:
- A valid, green, bar-coded ID book; temporary ID; or smart ID card;
- to be a South African citizen;
- to be over the age of 16 to register, however, you can only vote when you are 18 years or older;
- to live in the ward where the by-election is held.
If you need to check your registration status you can do one of the following:
- Going to check.da.org.za and following the prompts.
- Going to the IEC’s website and following the prompts.
- SMSing your ID number to 32810 (cost: R1).

Please contact your councillor or the IEC should you require a special vote.
- You may be eligible for a special vote at your voting station if you are unable to vote on Election Day.
- You may be eligible for a home visit to cast your special vote if you are physically infirm, disabled or pregnant and as a result unable to visit your voting station on election day.
- Special voting takes place on a date set in the election timetable, which is usually the day before the by-election day.
- Special vote applications must be submitted during a set period as specified in the election timetable (usually about two weeks before the by-election date).
- You can apply at the local IEC office where the by-election is taking place, or online at this address, or by SMSing your ID number to 32249 ( R1 per SMS).
- You will be notified of the progress of your application. Only voters whose applications are approved (successful) may cast a special vote.
How to register online:
- Go to registertovote.elections.org.za;
- Provide your name and surname, cellphone number, and create a password
- Enter your address details
- Upload a photo or file of your valid SA ID book. Make sure the barcode is clearly visible
- Insert the one-time pin (OTP) sent to the mobile phone number you entered at step 2
- Within 24 hours of completing steps 1 to 5, you will receive a notification that you are registered to vote.
Once you have registered to vote in a particular area you cannot vote outside of that area.
