Sasol handed diving equipment to Delta 1 Rescue Diving at a function at Sasol Club.
Rethabile Ndjibu, Manager: Corporate Communication, Events and Branding at Sasol, said that growing up in a township, she knew that a lot of children don’t really know how to swim but they think that they do. “Children would then go and swim in an unauthorised area,” said Rethabile, “and we would then be told at the end of the day that someone is missing only to find the body later on.”
She said that the first time that she saw a diver was at such an incident. “I realised how important such a job is.”
Rethabile also thanked Delta 1 for the opportunity to work together.
Jaco van der Merwe, marketing manager for Delta 1, thanked Sasol for the donation and gave an overview of statistics in the province. Delta 1 had 316 call-outs over the past 3 years and there were 225 drowning incidents in the same period. 268 bodies were recovered over the last three years.
Delta 1 is a non-profit organisation that are funded in large part by themselves.

“We supply hope in a very dark situation,” said Jaco, “and people don’t understand the effort that the team, Andries, Jaco and Blackie, put in to help the people.”
The donation will empower Delta 1 to increase their service to the community.
