It is back to school, back to a harsh reality for the Gr 7 and 12 students on Monday, 8 June.
“The media briefing by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga scheduled for today, 31 May at 18h00 has been rescheduled due to the Minister being engaged in further consultations on the readiness for the reopening of schools,” the department said in a media statement.
On Monday, 8 June the schools are reopening for Gr 7 and 12 learners. There are many mixed feelings regarding the reopening of schools. Many feel that the schools should not reopen but as the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga said: “Life must go on.”
The schools have been taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of their students and teachers.
One parent from Hoërskool Secunda took extra precautions and donated a brand new sanitation booth to the school.
This brand new sanitation booth was built by Mr Louis Nel. Mr Nel built and designed the sanitation booth that was sponsored to the school.
On Friday morning Mr Nel delivered the sanitation booth to the school and all measures were put in place. The students will be entering from the gate in Coen Brits street. There is tape on the pavement to ensure that the students follow social distancing and then walk through the sanitation booth.

The sanitation booth is decorated with funky germs to make the students feel comfortable and not feel intimidated by the booth.
Mr Lucas Meiring told The Bulletin that the school prepared intensely for the return of the Gr 12 students. He said that 188 of 189 matriculants would return to school.
“I did intense research regarding different sanitisers in order not to damage the students’ clothes, bags and ensured that their skin would not be affected. I found a sanitiser that we could mix with water. It is a water based sanitiser and non-alcoholic. The school only has the best intentions to ensure the safety of the students.”
He continued: “The sanitiser has an antibacterial and antivirus in the product.”
The school also has all the necessary documents to ensure parents that the sanitiser is MSDS approved and the company is ISO 9001
He also informed The Bulletin that all the classes were washed with Dettol, Jik and Hany Andy. On top of that Afriforum also sprayed all the classes with an antibacterial and antivirus.
“We would like to thank Mr Louis Nel for building the sanitation booth and Mavrick Trading for sponsoring the unit,” Mr Meiring said.
