Al-Imdaad Foundation plans to help 60,000 people in 40 countries with Ramadan donations
The Al-Imdaad Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing aid and assistance to local and global communities in need, hopes to increase the number of donations it receives over Ramadan this year. The Foundation raises most of the money it needs to fund its charitable work over Ramadan, and this year, it would like to reach more people in need.
Ramadan is known as the month of compassion and generosity. As people fast during Ramadan they experience a little hunger, thirst, and weakness themselves, softening their hearts to the plight of those who experience this every day. All Muslims are encouraged to be generous and giving based on the central Islamic principle of Zakat, and this is especially true during Ramadan.
As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, Zakat is an obligatory charitable contribution that all Muslims who meet certain wealth criteria must make. It is paid on 2.5% of your Zakat-eligible wealth, and it is a deeply spiritual form of giving that helps provide aid to those in need.
Zakat donations made over Ramadan help sustain the Al-Imdaad Foundation throughout the year. As Ramadan approaches, the Foundation is gearing up for its annual Ramadan food hamper and feeding programmes. These hamper programmes provide a month’s supply of essential foods to families in need across 40 countries so that they can fast without difficulties. In 2023, the Al-Imdaad Foundation aims to assist up to 60,000 fasting people through the programme. The Foundation will also provide new clothes to orphans and struggling children in Syria, Gaza, Jordan, Kenya, DR Congo, and South Africa through its Eid clothes programmes.
Last year, some of the projects funded by Ramadan donations (which include Zakat donations and other donations) included:
an Afghanistan crisis appeal to provide food and emergency assistance to struggling Afghan families;
a Gaza Hospital which provides greatly needed medical services in the Gaza Strip;
support for Syria projects;
many local South African projects, such as Slice-4-Life, Winter Warmth, and Make breakfast Possible.
The Al-Imdaad Foundation also runs countless other assistance programmes throughout the year. Some of the NGO’s most recent projects include Pakistan Flood Relief Housing, the Pakistan Medical Centre, and the Rohingya Medical Health Post. The Foundation continues to expand its Jordan Refugee Village, as well as a variety of sustainable agriculture and garden projects in South Africa. The organisation will also continue to support Turkey and Syria by aiding with earthquake relief.
With so many important projects on the go, the Al-Imdaad Foundation always needs donations, and Ramadan is the perfect time to give.
“Ramadan is the month of generosity, and it is when the Prophet Muhammad,[AO1] peace be upon him, would be at his most generous. This makes it the ideal time for us to strive to give out of love.”

WOMEN IN MINING BENEFICIARY BELIEVE THAT “YOU NEED TO WORK SMART TO GAIN MUCH”
Inqubeko yomama (pty)Ltd, loosely translated as the achievement of women, was founded in 2019 by eMalahleni businesswomen Prima Mokgokoloshi. This enterprise employs six employees and renders industrial and domestic cleaning services to the mining sector and other clients.
Prima Mokgokoloshi
Prima is one of twenty beneficiaries of Seriti’s Women in Mining programme, a holistic development programme aiming at empowering woman entrepreneurs in the eMalahleni/Middelburg area, which was launched in May 2022 by Seriti. This programme is being run by Collective Value Creation (CVC) until the end of 2023 and emphasises Seriti’s focus on women’s empowerment.
Like most entrepreneurs, Prima dreamed of owning her own business and noticed an opportunity in her neighbourhood to render a cleaning service. She was however faced with serious challenges such as adequate cleaning equipment and obtaining sustainable cleaning projects. To an extent, she still struggles to overcome these challenges and hence, this mother of six regards the Women in Mining programme as heaven sent where she hopes to gain more expertise, improve her business skills and grow as a businesswoman and individual. In particular, she would like to acquire more knowledge of the bidding and pricing process.
Prima, who likes to read wide on social media and enjoys jogging, says the programme has taught her so far that a business’ image, advertising and networking play an important part on how you present your business offering to clients. “As a woman, I was only relying on my own knowledge and experience in the field where I was mostly disadvantaged due to lack of knowledge on business management. This programme enables me to gain more exposure in the field and network with other experienced female entrepreneurs.”
CVC’s Project Manager on the programme, Orla Ollewagen, said that “As women have unique needs and face diverse challenges, particularly as an entrepreneur, a common thread arose from workshopping these needs prior to designing the programme. Some core shared concerns include feelings of loneliness as a female leader; the daily struggle of juggling numerous roles, and not being taken seriously as a woman in business. I have a passion for women’s development and am excited to see these ladies develop individually and collectively as they support one another to grow their own businesses as well as those of others.”
Prima has praise for her family’s support and especially her husband who stands in for her when she has to attend courses and meetings. He is also the company’s project manager. Asking her what advice she would give to other prospective female entrepreneurs, she replies, “You first need to love what you do and commit to your business. Ensure that you become proactive, and daily search for opportunities. It is not an easy journey but first gain knowledge and do thorough research on the type of business.”
Apart from growing her business, she would like to explore the field of property investment.
In closure, Prima has the following message to the sponsor of the programme. “It is an honour to be selected and be part of this programme. The sponsors have truly invested in the socio-economic growth of women. I have never thought that I would be considered for an opportunity of this magnitude and be groomed by a team of such great calibre. They are professional, kind, and understand our different backgrounds and ethics. I thank the sponsors for their investment, and I will ensure that their commitment will not be in vain.”
EDUCATION IS KEY TO HELPING ANIMALS AND THEIR OWNERS AND FOR CHANGING ANIMAL WELFARE IN THE WORLD!
Sadly, most people don’t spend nearly enough time educating themselves on how to improve their pets’ lives or how to help other animals or animal welfare organizations. Below you can find a summary of many of the animal topics in this ANIMALS 101 series from almost 24 months. This article is part five of the summary series and focuses on how you can help make a difference. Here is part one, part two, part three and part four.
Let’s touch on a few of them!
WILD ANIMALS BELONG IN THE WILD AND NOT IN YOUR HOME AS PETS
SHEBA (tiger), like many other animals, paid the price with her life as well as those she killed because humans demand to keep exotic and wild animals in captivity or as pets, whether to exploit them for money or boost their egos, because they are ignorant, selfish, or stupid. Read part one & part two on the keeping of wild/exotic pets and why we don’t support it nor should you!
ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE
Animal welfare is like the Mafia, if you are in, you never get out! If you can’t get into the trenches (hats off to them), many people donate money to the cause or help in other ways, which is necessary too. Remember, it can look great on social media, but what questions should you be asking as a supporter? What goes on behind the scenes? Just because the organization is registered does not mean their intentions are pure. Due to mismanagement, negligence and fraud by some organizations, the rest have to work extra hard to prove they can be trusted.
It is important to choose to support reputable organizations and help hold them accountable. The Paw Company is a registered NPC and part of what we do is to train animal welfare organizations (free) on the business side of things and to hold those who work with animals accountable including veterinarians and other businesses that work with animals. Sadly, most of the public does not even know or understand half of what is going on in animal welfare and this article serves to help you make more informed decisions and for organizations to re-evaluate their effectiveness. Read more on how to keep veterinarians accoutable too.

PITBULLS – THE BAN THE BREED & THE BEHAVIOUR
After reports of a Pitbull attack killing a child of the owner and another killed by the neighbour’s dog, a massive uproar began and the call for a Pitbull ban went viral. Chaos is unfolding around us while many people are still unaware of the massive crisis surrounding these Pitbull breeds (and others) and sadly thousands of innocent animals, have and continue to pay with their lives.
The fact is that any breed can be taught to be aggressive and any dog can bite, but the difference is that a Pitbull can do more damage than a Chihuahua. Pitbulls sadly have gotten a bad reputation over the years. Pitbulls and other power breeds became “trendy” and gave owners a sort of “street credit”.
A ban on Pitbulls is not the solution but rather legislation and accountability for pet owners! Read more about the Pitbull crisis in SA.
THE MUZZLE STIGMA
Big dogs, small dogs, and all breeds and sizes may need muzzles sometimes. It is not only a breed-specific tool. Here are just a few of the many reasons all dogs should learn to be comfortable in a muzzle.
With their shorter lifespans, pet loss is inevitable and saying goodbye is something every pet lover faces eventually. Saying goodbye is the hardest part of our relationships with our pets. Regardless of the type of pet, furry, finned, or scaled, no matter the species, we love them with all of our hearts and feel their loss as strongly as we’d feel the loss of a human family member or friend.
It doesn’t matter whether your pet died because of age, injury, or illness, the death of a beloved pet is excruciating and grief is the response to that loss. It is a strong and sometimes overwhelming emotion. Grief is the price we pay for love. They go together……that is the pact.
Read more about pet loss and the grief that accompanies it here or reach out to The Paw Company for more resources. We know this grief all too well! Remember that grief is personal and grief from the loss of a pet is as valid as losing a friend or family member.
DECEMBER HOLIDAYS ARE TOUGH FOR ANIMAL WELFARE
The December holiday is always a tough time for animal welfare organizations and their staff. There is always an extra influx of surrendered and lost animals, injured and scared ones after fireworks events, convenience euthanasia, extra expenses with fewer donations and then the additional problem of animals as gifts, etc. Animal welfare never gets a holiday as it is a 24/7 kind of job that is physically and emotionally exhausting. Read more on what we refer to as silly season here.
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO HELP ANIMAL WELFARE WITHOUT HAVING TO DONATE.
Animal welfare always needs your help for those without a voice! Your help does not have to be financial. There are ways to prevent animal welfare organizations from being overwhelmed or to stop animal cruelty by not taking part in cruel practices (even unknowingly). Read more on how you can help.
Animal cruelty comes in many forms and you might, unknowingly, be contributing to it by supporting certain practices, industries, and buying certain beauty products or certain clothing items. With so many animal-friendly options available, and more on the market every day, it’s never been easier to have a cruelty-free wardrobe. FOUR PAWSshares how you can show more compassion in fashion in 5 simple steps.
IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS YOU CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE!
Look for more sustainable plant-based fibres like organic or recycled cotton and hemp – these fabrics are gentle on the planet and can be found in so many fashion items.
Go for products made from waste! Discarded fishing nets, plastic bottles, recycled polyester, and even used coffee grinds are being made into versatile, durable, and luxurious fabrics turning one of the world’s greatest problems – consumer waste – into one of its best solutions!
Love pre-loved! Wearing it Kind doesn’t have to break the bank. Try the 80:20 rule – 80% pre-loved and 20% new and kind.
Be a protector of oceans, rivers, and lakes every time you wash! Use a washing bag in your machine to capture nasty microfibres and put a stop to harmful microplastic pollution.
Speak up! Already have a favourite brand you wish was doing more? Let them know! Your voice may be just the motivation they need to make their products better for animals, people, and the planet.
Your pets are your responsibility. If you can no longer care for them, please surrender them to the SPCA or a reputable animal welfare organization. If you can’t afford to properly care for them or have the time to meet their needs, then don’t get them. Make the time to learn more about your pets and their needs.
April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals awareness month, so next week we will look at how you can recognize and help prevent cruelty.

EASTER is around the corner and with Easter comes family gatherings, chocolate, Easter egg hunts and gifts. Please don’t use this occasion to give your children chicks and rabbits just because they asked for them and think that they look “cute.” Pet ownership is a huge commitment and responsibility and it’s not something that should be done on impulse. In addition, Easter, like every holiday, involves potential hazards for your pets, that every pet parent should be aware of, so make sure your pets avoid Easter goodies and decorations to avoid unexpected heartaches. YOUR PETS CAN BE HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER IN 2023! HERE ARE OUR PAWSOME PET NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS……IF YOU MISSED IT!
A new year brings new goals, renewed hope and 365 days of opportunity for you and your pet to bond, develop healthier habits and discover new ways to live a full life. An important first step is to avoid becoming overwhelmed thinking you need to make big changes overnight. The important thing is to make a plan and move steadily forward.
Included in your pet new years resolutions should be regular HEALTH CHECKS.Our pets might get sick or injured and need veterinary care, but we can also add many tools to our toolbox, like health checks at home, to help prevent conditions from occurring in the first place or manage them better to allow our pets to live long and happy lives. Being informed and understanding what illnesses and conditions our pets might face is key to longevity. It is important to do regular health checks on your pets by inspecting their body from head to toe every week and making notes.
Between vet visits, you can keep a close eye on your pet’s health by conducting an at-home physical exam (demo video). Physical “inspection” touch with some positive re-enforcement on a regular basis can also help make vet visits more comfortable.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS NATURAL DOG BEHAVIOUR?
Dogs are social animals and have a wide range of natural behaviours. These behaviours are instinctive and are used to communicate with other dogs and humans. Common natural behaviours in dogs include barking, digging, chasing and chewing. Dogs also display behaviours such as jumping, licking, marking and play-bowing. These behaviours are all natural and help dogs to interact with their environment and with other animals. It is a way to communicate with those who are willing to listen!
What may look like naughty behaviour to you is often just your pet behaving as their species do. There can also be breed-specific traits which are not their fault, like Terriers that dig and will likely always dig!Do you want to better understand your dog and improve your relationship? Then learn about their behaviour. When you know what is natural behaviour you can easily know which “naughty” behaviour to address. One of the five freedoms of animal welfare includes the freedom to express natural behaviours! Read more about some natural behaviours here.
Aggressive behaviour is probably the most common behavioural problem in dogs seen by behaviour professionals and the most dangerous one seen in companion dogs. Many behaviours that people perceive as aggressive are actually normal forms of communication. Behaviour is a common reasons why people surrender animals, especially dogs to shelters and aggression is one of them. The lack of understanding of basic and normal animal behaviour remains part of the problem! Read more about dog bite prevention.
DID YOU PICK THE RIGHT ANIMAL FOR YOUR FAMILY WHEN YOU LOOK AT ENERGY LEVELS?
Dogs, just like people have unique personalities and energy levels (mentally & physically) and it can affect the way your dog responds to you. Dogs that have a lot more energy than their humans often don’t get enough exercise. This is why it’s very important to know your energy level, understand how to determine the dog/pet’s energy level and then choose the right fit for your family taken into account your lifestyle routines too.
Dogtime shares how high-energy dogs are those who are always ready and waiting for action. Originally bred to perform a canine job of some sort, such as a retrieving game for hunters or herding livestock, they have the stamina to put in a full workday. Low-energy dogs on the other hand are the canine equivalent of a human couch potato, content to doze the day away.
Energy levels matter because if you can’t meet that animals’ needs, then it will cause frustration for you and in return the animal pays a price too. Read more about energy levels here.
CAN YOU READ YOUR DOG’S BODY LANGUAGE FROM HEAD TO TAIL?
Most animals use body language as well as sound and smell to communicate with one another. Body language is the movements of animals’ including facial expressions, eye behaviour, posture, and the movement of their body parts and is inherent in all creatures including humans. When we understand body language, we can better understand our pets and meet their needs which will deepen our relationship. Dog bites and fights can also be prevented by better understanding and predicting behaviour.
Many people think that it is easy to ‘read’ their dog, but there are so many subtle signs that are missed. Decoding your pet or another pet’s body language is not as straightforward as looking at a tail wag or the ears. For one, many of these gestures happen at once and context is important too. On top of that, a breeds’ physical appearance can make it even more difficult. Read more about body language here.
Your pets are your responsibility. You need to know how to meet their needs and give them the best possible life. If you can no longer care for them, please surrender them to the SPCA or a reputable animal welfare organization. If you can’t afford to properly care for them or have the time to meet their needs, then don’t get them.
Next week we will share another summary of our recent posts focussed on animal welfare issues.
GMM is wasting water while large areas struggle with water supply
Residents are still struggling with water supply whilst the Rand Water account is now reaching catastrophic proportions.
Bethal residents have been complaining about the water supply. So has the residents of Thistle Grove, eMbalenhle, Emzinoni and Leandra. Even Secunda has experienced water problems.
But if one investigates the issue a bit further it is clear that Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) does not have the water supply under control.
The reservoirs next to Adullam Mission are a prime example. Water is gushing out of an overflow pipe (or similar) forming a small stream that filled a small dam. This has been reported to have been happening for up to two months.
GMM has repeatedly tried to shift the blame. Farmers are blamed for allegedly stealing water with illegal connections. Huge leaks are blamed. Even Rand Water was not spared. And finally, the load-shedding also bared the brunt of the accusations.
All the above might contribute to the water problem. But, there is always a but, it does not take away from the fact that one has to have your own house in order. GMM cannot blame people while they are wasting huge amounts of water themselves.
The problem became so bad in Thistle Grove that the residents took to the streets and stopped traffic driving through Kinross. Tyres and other rubble were burned to show their frustration. They even faced the wrath of the Police as police fired rubber bullets at them as they were retreating.
Bethal had to rely on donations from other communities just to have drinking water. The reservoirs are constantly being filled but are rarely enough to supply a large area of the town and Emzinoni.
Eendract and Leslie (Leandra) also regularly report that they are struggling with water.
eMablenhle residents had to endure long times without water also.
The media had been very active in reporting about the water problems in GMM but to no avail. Water trucks were intermittent at best with residents complaining that the water was not clean or that the truck drove so fast that it was unable to get it to stop.
Even Sasol opened water collection points when the lack of water became unbearable in Ext 22 Secunda.
The World Health Organisation describe the basic water needs as “These uses ordinarily include drinking, personal sanitation, washing of clothes, food preparation and personal and household hygiene. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between 50 and 100 litres of water per person per day are needed to ensure that most basic needs are met and few health concerns arise.“
Chapter 2 of the Constitution of South Africa provides that: “Everyone has the right to have access to sufficient food and water.” To give effect to this right Parliament has enacted the Water Services Act 108 of 1997.
The Water Services Act of 1997 states: “Right of access to basic water supply and basic sanitation
3. ( 1 ) Everyone has a right of access to basic water supply and basic sanitation.
(2) Every water services institution must take reasonable measures to realise these rights.
(3) Every water services authority must, in its water services development plan. provide for measures to realise these rights.
(4) The rights mentioned in this section are subject to the limitations contained in this Act.”
Chapter two of the SA Constitution reads:
Section 27. Health care, food, water and social security
1. Everyone has the right to have access to
a. health care services, including reproductive health care;
b. sufficient food and water; and
c. social security, including, if they are unable to support themselves and their dependants, appropriate social assistance.
2. The state must take reasonable legislative and other measures, within its available resources, to achieve the progressive realisation of each of these rights.
3. No one may be refused emergency medical treatment.
GMM must look after its water reservoirs and sources to be able to provide for the basic needs of its residents.
The lack of proper maintenance and infrastructure repairs/upgrading is slowly but surely starting to bite harder and deeper into the ability to provide good drinking water to the residents of GMM.
Let us hope that GMM will start to care for its infrastructure!
PUBLIC ASSISTANCE IS REQUESTED FOR THE ARREST OF POLICE (SAPS) ASSASSINS
MPUMALANGA – It is alleged that in the early hours of Monday, 3 April 2023 a member from Crime Intelligence Middleburg (SAPS) received a tip-off from an informer regarding the theft of diesel at a mine near the N4. The member contacted his colleague from Middleburg Detective Services and they drove together in a state vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux double cab using the Stoffburg road as directed by the source.

John Steenhuisen was re-elected by a packed congress as DA leader.
A resounding vote of confidence was given to John Steenhuisen at the DA”s Congress to lead the DA into next year’s election and beyond.
Dr Mpho Phalatse, Ex JHB Mayor, contested the leadership. The support for Steenhuisen however, was overwhelming. Steenhuisen secured 83% of the vote.
This weekend all roads led to Midrand as the DA held it Federal Congress, the largest and the most diverse in the history of the party.
Nearly 2 000 delegates from all parts of the country descended on the Gallagher Convention Centre to elect the party’s new Federal Leadership. The DA is a truly inclusive party with 45% of its delegates and activists being non-public representatives coming from their branches.
The Congress is important for South Africa because the leaders elected may very well be the leaders who will reshape the national government as the ANC’s support again drops below 50% in 2024.
The size of the event speaks to the tremendous growth of the DA over the years. The party has exponentially grown, since 2015 when it had just over 1200 delegates.
Mpumalanga delegates
It is a truly international event that will be attended by more than 400 members of the media, including representatives from countries such as England and France.
The nearly 2000 delegates to Congress are made up of branches activists, councillors, Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) from across the country. Each province will be sending a sizable delegation depending on their proportional support and branch formation in new territories for the DA.
The party now governs millions of South Africans in several metros and local municipalities across the country.
The electronic election systems opened early this morning (Sunday) and delegates cast their votes. A total of 98% of the delegates made their mark.
Ivan Meyer was re-elected as federal chairperson.
The new three deputy chairpersons are Anton Bredell (third deputy), Solly Malatsi (second deputy) and JP Smith who was elected first deputy chairperson.
Dion George was also re-elected, unopposed, as federal finance chairperson.
Helen Zille, the party’s federal council chairperson, was re-elected unopposed.
The three newly elected deputy chairpersons of the federal council are Thomas Walters, Dr Annelie Lotriet and Ashor Sarupen.
The congress hall erupted in cheers as the results for the leader’s position were read. Delegates chanted Steenhuisen’s name even before the results were read.
In his acceptance speech, John declared the EFF as enemy no1, “Today, I publicly declare Julius Malema’s EFF to be political enemy number one of the Democratic Alliance.”
“Given the fact that the ANC now officially co-governs with the EFF in parts of Gauteng, we need to start taking the threat of these parties ganging up to destroy our country in 2024 very, very seriously.” Said John, “I want to be unequivocal about the DA’s view on this: the day that an ANC-EFF government takes over, it will be Doomsday for South Africa!”
“But fortunately, there is one – and only one – insurance policy against the ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition. And that is to vote for the Democratic Alliance,” said Steenhuisen, “Because the DA is the only party that is big enough, and strong enough, to stop Julius Malema.”
John continued to outline the DA’s plans for South Africa “Because, for the ANC, politics has become more important than the people. But I’m proud to say that the DA is different. Because in the DA, we are patriots who love South Africa above all else, and because we realise that the mission to save our country from the ANC and its Doomsday Coalition with the EFF, is urgent.”
Here is John Steenhuisen’s complete acceptance speech.
Democrats, friends and fellow South Africans,
I am humbled to stand before you today to answer the call you have made loud and clear during this historic Congress.
And my answer is a resounding yes!
Yes! I will work with each and every one of you to lead the DA into national government in 2024!
I want to thank every DA delegate, public representative, activist, member and supporter who has placed such overwhelming trust in me to serve as Federal Leader for a second term.
I pledge to devote every fibre of my being to our shared destiny of boldly taking the DA into the future.
In this quest, I will be joined by the rest of the DA’s national leadership team that you have elected this weekend.
To our federal chairman, deputy chairs, federal council chairwoman and to her deputies: congratulations.
I look forward to working closely with all of you, as well as with our provincial, regional and local leadership teams, to take our party to even greater heights.
To every candidate who stood for election this weekend, I want to say: thank you for making our internal democracy stronger.
I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the people who often make the greatest sacrifices in the DA’s quest to save South Africa.
I am sure that every person in this room can attest that the DA would never have grown to become the party we know today without the unwavering support of each of our families.
To my family – my wife Terry and my three beautiful daughters – thank you for supporting and uplifting me along every step of this journey.
It is from your unending love that I find the courage to persevere even when times get tough.
Democrats,
Throughout this campaign, I have told you that 2024 is going to be the DA’s Moonshot Election.
While the term “Moonshot” originally meant “long shot,” it’s increasingly being used to describe a monumental effort and a lofty goal – in other words, a giant leap forward.
A leap like ensuring that the DA leads national government in 2024.
And, like the original mission to take humans to the moon, we take this shot to defeat the ANC and keep the EFF out not because it is easy, but because it is hard.
Since 2019, we have worked on the first phase of that project. This phase was all about stabilising and fixing the DA so that we could get back to winning ways, on our way to taking the Moonshot.
It was about rebuilding internal cohesion, discipline, systems and policy.
As we look back to 2019 today, I can confidently say that this phase was a success.
The DA that emerges from this Congress is more united and more confident about the party’s future than at any time I can remember.
We have, indeed, built a strong DA.
Yet as one phase of the journey to our 2024 Moonshot ends, so another begins.
Today.
This is the phase where we reposition our strong DA to build a better future for South Africa.
In this new phase, the DA and our country will face some of the greatest opportunities – but also some of the greatest risks – in our democratic history.
Final address to selected delegates at a private function
The realistic prospect of the ANC being dragged below 50% in next year’s national election presents a moment to radically reshape South Africa and our politics.
But it will be up to us to determine whether this will be for the better.
Or, whether the next era in our country’s history will be even worse than ANC domination.
While it feels to many of us like South Africa has hit rock bottom, there is one unfortunate truth in politics. And that is that things can always get worse.
There is one risk that, above all else, threatens the future of both my family, and yours.
That risk is the increasingly realistic prospect of an alliance between the ANC and the EFF taking power next year.
Given the fact that the ANC now officially co-governs with the EFF in parts of Gauteng, we need to start taking the threat of these parties ganging up to destroy our country in 2024 very, very seriously.
I want to be unequivocal about the DA’s view on this: the day that an ANC-EFF government takes over, it will be Doomsday for South Africa.
EFF Doomsday will make the collapse of Zimbabwe look like a dress-rehearsal, and will leave all South Africans destitute – black, coloured, white and Indian.
That is why, during the remaining months before next year’s election, the DA will make it our number one priority – and do absolutely everything in our power – to prevent an ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition from taking power.
Over the past thirty years, the ANC has proven itself to be the opponent of progress in our country.
But make no mistake: the EFF is its enemy.
The EFF Doomsday Coalition will expropriate property without compensation and abolish private property rights.
The EFF Doomsday Coalition will nationalise and destroy foreign investment, businesses, banks and mines.
The EFF Doomsday Coalition will plunge this country into ethnic and racial conflict the likes of which it has never witnessed before.
The cold, hard truth is that the Doomsday Coalition between the ANC and EFF has already taken over Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, with the help of its little proxies.
Next year, it will be knocking on the doors of the Union Buildings, next door from here, in Pretoria.
This is a fact that should send shivers down the spines of every patriot and freedom loving person in this country.
But fortunately, there is one – and only one – insurance policy against the ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition. And that is to vote for the Democratic Alliance.
Because the DA is the only party that is big enough, and strong enough, to stop Julius Malema.
The DA is the only party with the size, the resources and the track record to oppose and defeat the Doomsday Coalition.
For proof, look no further than the action we took against the chaos that the EFF planned to unleash during its so-called National Shutdown.
The DA took decisive legal steps and mobilised our thousands of branches all across this country to stop the EFF dead in their tracks.
Today, I publicly declare Julius Malema’s EFF to be political enemy number one of the Democratic Alliance.
And I commit the DA to fight back against the EFF at every turn, with the ultimate aim of defeating the Doomsday Coalition that could seal South Africa’s fate next year.
This is no longer about politics.
It is about the survival of democracy, and the survival of South Africa.
Throughout the period of this leadership campaign, I have reflected deeply upon the risk of the EFF coming to power, and the demands that this places upon the DA.
I approached this question in my capacity as Leader of the Democratic Alliance, carefully considering what we need to do to maximise our party’s support in next year’s election.
But I also approached it in another way. In a way that is demanded of me by our country’s Constitution.
In clause 57, our Constitution recognises – and I quote – “the leader of the largest opposition party in [Parliament] as the Leader of the Opposition.”
It is a clause that may not be known by many people, but it is one that has profound implications for the Moonshot we are about to take to defeat the prospect of an ANC-EFF coalition.
As the person duly elected to lead not only the DA but to also serve as the constitutionally-recognised Leader of the Opposition, I had to consider the way forward not only for our party, but also for the broader opposition cause.
And I have come to the conclusion, fellow Democrats and fellow citizens, that the DA has now arrived at our clause 57 moment.
This is the moment when we fully embrace clause 57 of our Constitution to acknowledge that the DA is no longer just another political party.
For the truth is that South Africans no longer expect the DA to be an opposition party, let alone just one party among many.
South Africans now expect us to step up and become the leader of the alternative government.
What they want, above all else, is for the DA to unite all the forces in this country that stand opposed to the ANC and the EFF.
What they want, is for the DA to lead.
And lead is what we shall do.
I ask you to simply look to the ANC for an example of what happens when a leader lacks the courage to put South Africa ahead of narrow political interests.
Cyril Ramaphosa constantly puts the ANC ahead of South Africa. He even openly admits that he would – and I quote – “rather be seen as a weak President, than to divide the ANC.”
It is because of this mindset that our nation is rotten with cadre deployment, infected with corruption, and dying from maladministration.
And it is because of this mindset that the ANC has embraced the EFF as a coalition partner in Gauteng.
Because, for the ANC, politics has become more important than the people.
But I’m proud to say that the DA is different.
We recognise that if we are to achieve our Moonshot to remove the ANC from power and keep the EFF out, we will need to think and act in bold new ways.
We recognise that one simply cannot achieve something that has never been done before by acting the same way you’ve always acted before.
Above all, we recognise that now is the time for the DA to become the leader of the alternative that will change our country for the better, as clause 57 demands.
In the interests of doing what Cyril Ramaphosa cannot, of rising above petty partisan politics, of putting South Africa first and of keeping the ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition out, I can today make the following announcement.
In my capacity as leader, not only of the DA but of the opposition alternative in this country, our party will immediately initiate a process to form a pre-election Moonshot Pact with likeminded political parties, civil society organisations and civic movements to defeat the ANC, to keep the EFF out, and to inaugurate a new national opposition coalition government.
This invitation is broad and generously open to the leaders of all civil society bodies and opposition parties that are, as a matter of principle, opposed to the ANC and the EFF.
But it excludes all parties and organisations who’ve tethered themselves to the ANC.
The purpose of this Pact will be to forge coordination and unity of purpose between all organisations that want to defeat the ANC and keep the EFF out. To achieve the Moonshot, we need a whole-of-society approach that builds a new ecosystem of change.
The Pact’s purpose will also be to sit around the table to agree on rules of engagement that will enable different organisations to retain their own identities while bringing an end to the petty squabbles and division that only benefits the ANC.
Furthermore, when I say we must work together to decisively defeat the ANC, I do so deliberately.
It will not be enough to save South Africa if we drag the ANC to just below 50%, as that will still leave them with too many avenues to stay in power, including through a Doomsday Coalition with the EFF.
But let me be clear: it will also not be enough to form an impotent, unstable minority coalition.
Our experience in places like Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni teaches us that minority coalitions that cannot reach 51% are inherently unstable.
The DA has no interest in destabilising South Africa through an unworkable minority coalition.
What this means is that the Moonshot Pact must work together to reach the mark of 51%, so that we can defeat the ANC and its proxies, and keep the EFF out.
It is in pursuit of this goal that the DA takes the bold and unprecedented step to lead a united opposition Moonshot Pact.
As the name suggests, we are well aware that this an ambitious goal. But it is nonetheless a goal worth pursuing.
Because in the DA, we are patriots who love South Africa above all else, and because we realise that the mission to save our country from the ANC and its Doomsday Coalition with the EFF, is urgent.
South Africa simply does not have another five years to watch opposition parties squabble amongst themselves about whose bucket of water is colder, while the house is on fire.
Now, I realise that this is a significant moment.
I therefore want to briefly address, in turn, the leaders of other opposition parties, the members of Congress gathered here today, and most importantly, the people of South Africa.
To the leaders of likeminded opposition parties, I say: it’s a time for a reset.
So, keep an eye on your inboxes.
You will soon receive a letter from my office asking whether you are prepared to join the process of forming the Moonshot Pact.
That, surely, is a question worth answering, a challenge worth facing, and an alternative worth creating.
Each party that signs up to the Pact should be guided by one central question only: what are we doing to grow the non-EFF opposition vote from the 32% that pertained in 2019, to the 51% we need in 2024?
Finally. I want to speak to the voters. I know that many of you remain skeptical of coalitions.
This is completely understandable, given the way in which fragmentation and side-switching by certain parties has undermined the stability of some of these governments.
It is precisely because we have learned some very hard lessons, that the DA is taking the lead to form a pre-election Moonshot Pact.
By getting different parties to make a public and transparent commitment to the Pact, and the values it will be built on, well in advance of next year’s election, we hope to provide greater certainty to opposition voters than was the case before the 2021 election.
It is also because we have learned from past experience that the DA recently introduced a raft of legislative changes, including a constitutional amendment, to stabilise coalition governments and make them work better.
But I do want to point out that there are inspiring examples of successful cooperation between parties that I hope will guide our Moonshot Pact.
The first comes from KwaZulu-Natal, where a pact between the DA and the IFP has seen us collectively take more wards off the ANC than ever before.
In some cases where it made sense, the DA abstained from particular by-elections and encouraged our voters to tactically support the IFP’s candidate. In other cases where the opposite made sense, the IFP has done the same for us.
The result of this mature cooperation is that the DA and IFP together are systematically becoming bigger than the sum of our parts in KwaZulu-Natal.
Another positive example comes from the Cederberg Municipality in the Western Cape, where the DA, the Freedom Front Plus and the local Cederberg Eerste community party have tactically cooperated to win enough by-elections to remove the ANC and its proxies from power in the entire municipality.
I want to sincerely thank everyone involved in these success stories for showing us what can be done when we work together towards the goal we all share: defeating the ANC and keeping the EFF out.
Finally, our sweet victory on Tuesday that saw Cilliers Brink take up his rightful position as mayor of Tshwane after the ANC and EFF tried every dirty trick in the book, has created an opportunity to show what we can do when we stand united.
I am convinced that, within the next year, this multiparty coalition will begin to turn around Tshwane so that voters will have a powerful case study showing that DA-led coalitions can work.
Democrats, patriots, and fellow South Africans,
This, then, is the DA’s vision for 2024.
To defeat the ANC and keep the EFF out.
It is a vision of a reinvigorated DA that closes the gap with the ANC as we grow our support to unprecedented levels.
It is also a vision of a DA that works closely and constructively with our partners in the Moonshot Pact to ensure that we collectively reach the 51% mark we need to form a government.
With the DA at its core, this is a government that will:
End load-shedding;
Bring unemployment below 20%;
Halve violent crime;
Defeat cadre deployment to build a capable state and improve education and healthcare; as well as
Devolve more powers over electricity generation, public transport and policing to capable provincial and local governments.
This vision is the first prize, both for the DA and for our struggling country.
But putting South Africa first also means that we must be honest about the profound risks we face if the Doomsday Coalition comes to power.
And there is only one way to help the Moonshot Pact reach for the stars, while simultaneously guarding against the Doomsday Coalition destroying South Africa.
That way is to vote for the DA.
In 2024, a vote for the DA is not only a vote for a strong and stable party to anchor the Moonshot Pact.
It is simultaneously a vote to stop the EFF Doomsday from engulfing us all.
At this election, a vote for the DA will embody our shared hopes for the future, while also guarding against our greatest fears.
Fellow South Africans,
Our country has entered an era of profound uncertainty. There simply are no guarantees.
But this also means that the future is all to play for.
It will ultimately be up to the people of South Africa to decide whether our country goes down in flames under the ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition, or whether the DA and our partners in the Moonshot Pact gives our country a shot at redemption.
To the 14 million registered voters who did not turn up to vote in 2021, and to the millions more who are not registered at all, I say to you: your country’s future is now in your hands.
If you say you are not interested in politics, I say to you that politics will be very interested in you, and all you hold dear, if the EFF comes to power.
So let’s not wait until it is too late.
Let’s use our hard-earned democracy to save our beloved country while we still can.
If you are not registered to vote, please visit the IEC website today. It takes only a few minutes to register and make sure you can play your part next year to keep the EFF out and give hope a chance.
If you are already registered, I call on you to check that your details are correct and to make sure that you and your family turn up to vote DA on Election Day.
In 2024, the people of South Africa need to vote DA like their lives depend on it.
Democrats, we have built a stronger DA. This Congress has shown us that.
Now, let’s kickstart this Blue Machine to provide a better future for my family, for your family, and for every South African family.
We don’t have a moment to lose.
It is time to get out there, to hit the ground running, and to save our beautiful country!
South Africa is a wonderful place, and she’s worth the fighting for!
