Rumours started to spread of a positive COVID-19 case at one of Sasol’s mines earlier this week.
People were up in arms and worried that their family members and friends might have been in contact with the person that was tested positive.
Many people phoned The Bulletin to ensure that this was not fake news.
The Bulletin confirmed that this is not a rumour and received the following press statement from Sasol.
Secunda, Mpumalanga – On Sunday, 17 May 2020, a Sasol Mining employee was diagnosed positive for the Coronavirus. Out of the 28 employees that have been traced and tested, as first and second contacts, another four employees have tested positive, eight employees have tested negative and 16 test results remain outstanding. This brings the total number of positive cases at Sasol Mining to five.
Sasol Mining has controls in place, aligned to the Department of Health regulations, to ensure it safeguards the health and wellbeing of its employees. These measures seek to minimise the further spread of COVID-19 and include protocols to manage positive cases.
On Monday 18 May, the MEC for Health in Mpumalanga, Ms Sasekani Manzini, visited Shondoni Colliery to review compliance to the gazetted level 4 regulations and verify the state of readiness for various levels, especially alert system level 3.
