Secunda Grip and Rip Rugby Club thrashed Bethal Rugby in a runaway win.

Bethal Rugby had no answers to the superior skills of Secunda Grip and Rip Rugby Club on Saturday when they were thrashed on Sasol’s home grounds.

The home team scored 17 tries to end the game with a massive score of 94-0

The boys from Bethal fought hard in the second quarter of the game to keep Sasol to a halftime score of 32-0. It was unfortunately not enough, and Sasol racked up 62 points in the second half alone bringing the final score to 94-0.

Credit must be given to both teams as no serious foul play was detected and Bethal tried to stay positive throughout the match. A most difficult task indeed.

The Sasol team however showed why they are the provincial champions and why they have been so for the past few years. Their dominance in the game overwhelmed the visitors.

There were a few areas of concern though as it is so often in runaway games. In an uncustomary lull in concentration, Sasol gave away a few penalties. This lull was short-lived, and the score continued to roll.

The Bethal boys could not contain the Sasol backline attacks. Sasol continued to create overlaps and breaks in nearly every run of the ball. A few silly mistakes when passing most probably cost them a few more tries.

The forwards dominated the scrums and created pressure on the Bethal scrums. I do think that the scrums were not as smooth as it could have been, but it could also have been because the Bethal scrum could not contain Sasol.

Sasol secured several of Bethal’s lineouts that continued to put pressure on the Bethal defences. Bethal struggled to stop the runners from scrums and mauls and that in turn allowed Sasol to create overlaps in the backline.

Andries Schutte, who plays prop for Secunda Grip and Rip Rugby Club, was announced Man of the Match. Another player to mention must be Steyn van den Heever, He scored a Hat trick (3 tries) and has been consistent in all his previous games.

Bethal should not be deterred by the massive score. It is their first year in this league and it takes time to adapt to the different levels of competitiveness.
