Aqua Antics taught 8 adults to overcome their fear of water
The group started on Monday 17 January. The lessons were 30 minutes a week and the group had homework to do. This homework was done outside of the water. The group started with 10 adults but only 8 finished the course and received certificates.
“What a tremendously enthusiastic group of adults, they all spurred each other on. Many are parents of existing children we are teaching,” said Theresa Grey, “Our next adult beginner group starts Monday 11th April, it’s a 9-week course that encompasses all the core aquatic skills and they are able to do the first basic freestyle.”
The current group will move on to an intermediate class run by Coach Frank van Papendorp, bookings for these specific adult classes can be booked through Aqua Antics.

Fear of water, or ‘aquaphobia,’ is a common phenomenon. More than half of adults suffer from this phobia and are set off by things that strong swimmers wouldn’t even think about twice. Looking out into the water of an ocean or lake, the deep end of a pool, or simply a filled bathtub can bring on paralyzing fear – even if it clearly doesn’t pose a real threat to the person.

In South Africa, a lot of people do not have access to swimming lessons nor do they have regular access to pools of water that is big enough to swim in. When they enter pools or rivers, either voluntary or by falling, they run the risk of drowning. Having the confidence that Theresa and her team teaches can save lives.
