In recent weeks, eMbalenhle community members took it upon themselves to deal with gang members terrorising the community around eMbalenhle.
This resulted in houses that were burnt down and 6 people arrested. Amongst the 6 arrested people was an alleged gang leader.
For the past few weeks there has been peace in the area until Tuesday, 2 June.
In extension 22 (gate 6) and extension 14, heavily armed gangs were spotted walking through the streets allegedly terrorising the community with Pangas, knives and other dangerous weapons.
Community members were terrified and many of them blamed the Level 3 lockdown regulations. Level 3 lockdown regulations allows the buying and consumption of alcohol across the country.

“We didn’t have this problem for some time now since lockdown. Few days after alcohol is allowed, gang members are moving on the streets,” said a community member.
A few other incidents also occurred such as cell phone theft and other gang related incidents were also reported by community members who took their frustrations to social media. They said that the situation is getting out of hand again in eMbalenhle as gang members have returned.
As eMbalenhle is already in crisis with ridiculous power cuts and the winter that is here, the community has walk to work in the dark and walk home when it is dark out, they are fearing for their lives.
