    Man escapes death after hit and run

    He sustained moderate injuries and was stabilised before transported to hospital.

    A man who makes his living by washing taxis at Evander taxi rank narrowly escaped death after he was run over by a taxi on the R546 a few kilometres from the extension 12 four way stop.
    According to the eyewitness who spoke to The Bulletin, but wishes to remain anonymous as she was a passenger on the taxi, they were shocked by the heartless taxi driver from Vukanini taxi association (Vukta) who was driving the taxi from Secunda to eMbalenhle on the afternoon of Thursday, 12 September when he ran over a man and did not even stop to check the condition of the pedestrian. Even after passengers asked him to stop and check on the pedestrian, he continued driving away.
    A call came through on a (Govan Mbeki traffic alert) WhatsApp group of a hit and run accident on the R546 (Shukushukuma). Emergency personnel and the police rushed to the scene and upon arrival they found a man lying on the side of the road. Fortunately, he was conscious. He sustained moderate injuries and was stabilised before transported to hospital. He told The Bulletin that he was coming from work in Evander. He disembarked from a taxi. He was trying to cross the road when a taxi that was driving at high speed in the yellow lane ran him over.
    Another R546 tragedy is that a man died when he was run over by a vehicle at around 02h15 on Saturday morning, 14 September. A call came through of a pedestrian and vehicle accident (PVA) and when the police arrived, they found a man lying on the side of the road. Emergency personnel declared the person dead on the scene. According to the driver of the vehicle he was driving when a man from nowhere crossed the road and it was too late for him to stop. No one could tell where the man was coming from at that time of the night. An inquest docket was opened. – Sandile Mkhwanazi
