On Friday 10 August, Bethal SAPS conducted an awareness campaign at Palm Oord old aged home and Silwerjare old aged home on crimes against older persons.
The campaign was aimed at creating a partnership that ensures that adequate support is provided to address abuse as a result of crime and minimizing secondary victimization of an older person who is a victim of crime. During the visits at both old aged homes Constable Mogadime, Communications and Social crime prevention officer addressed different types of crimes and types of elder abuse which includes: Physical abuse, emotional(Verbal and psychological abuse), financial abuse, sexual abuse and violation of human rights to the elderly. He mentioned that elder abuse is a worldwide phenomenon and has many forms such as physical abuse, psychological abuse, financial abuse and neglect.
” The elderly are important pillars of the society and continue to play useful roles in the society by sharing their wisdom and experience with younger generations and they, therefore, need to lead useful and satisfying lives, Stay in their homes for as long as they are able to, receive care and support when they need it and be cared for in a place that protects them and allows them to lead dignified lives when they are no longer able to live at home,” added Constable Thomas Mogadime.
