In the small town of Kriel, Laerskool Krielpark is making big noise. Why you may ask? This primary school is one of the few primary schools that offer extracurricular activities that are out of this world!
The school started four years ago by introducing angling as a school sport. This took off and children and parents jumped at the chance to enjoy the sport together. Even though the children compete on their own, the school encourages the parents of these young anglers to make a day of it next to the water.
A team comprises six children and Laerskool Krielpark entered more than one team. They are also very proud of five of their anglers who will be competing in Nationals in December.
After seeing the success and interest in angling, the school decided that it would be a good idea to introduce another, not so popular, sport to the children: Archery. This might sound a little Robin Hood-like and unsafe, but rest assured these children are trained properly and safety is of paramount importance! The children can start archery in Gr. 4.
The school purchased 12 bows, arrows and targets and made sure there are some bows for the few lefthanded children as well. The school performed tremendously well the first year they competed and from then on there was no stopping them. The competitions are held indoors, but the archers of Laerskool Krielpark brave the hot and sunny days and the windy days only the Highveld produces. Their coaches are certified and will accompany the children to Nationals this month.
This school has no stop to them. Their next mission is to introduce Dance as a sport. Dance as a school sport is regulated by the Olympics Committee of South Africa.
“Laerskool Krielpark believes in developing children holistically. We believe in including everyone,” said headmaster, Mr Max Nel.
This school is definitely reaching for the stars and creating some in the process! – Ané Prinsloo
