Thursday 25 July, a day that will forever haunt Ms Jane Gwebu. She has been attending the court diligently while waiting for justice to be served. This was not to be.
Thandiwe Ngxonono, Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, was acquitted on two charges when she appeared before the magistrate at the Secunda Magistrates court.
The court case attracted a lot of attention and was well attended by supporters of both Thandi and Jane.
Jane laid two charges against the Mayor in June last year. The incident also happened in June according to Jane. The first charge alleges that the mayor threatened Jane (victim) with violence and death while the second charge alleges that the mayor has physically assaulted the victim. The mayor used all the tricks in the book to delay the court proceedings.
The foundation for the acquittal was that although there were claims of physical assault on Jane by Thandi there were no witnesses to corroborate these claims.
A jubilant Mayor left the court through the back entrance that she had been using during her appearances.
