The keen eye of a farmer Mr Pieter Britz of Standerton ensured the successful arrest of 4 fish poachers. Pieter spotted the Hyundai H100 bakkie that was heavily laden near Standerton. As he approached, they acted suspiciously and drove off with three people in the front and two on the back. He tried to stop the bakkie but he sped on. Pieter contacted other farmers as well as the Police and continued to follow them as they travelled towards Charl Cilliers. The bakkie was stopped at Charl Cilliers by the SAPS and farmers. One suspect fled as the bakkie came to a stop and he could not be arrested. When the bakkie was inspected they found 18 bags on the back of the bakkie filled with fish, nets and a tractor tube. The suspects informed the Police that they caught the fish at Grootdraai dam. They used the nets to catch the fish. The tube was used as a floating device. They could not produce a permit for the fish. The total fish amounted to 810. Two main species were caught namely Yellowfish and Largemouth Bass (Black Bass). The law enforcement units of Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA confiscated the fish that has an estimated street value of R45500. Capt Mhlangu wishes to thank the farmers for their effort, “Without the support of the farmers around Charl Cilliers we could not have arrested these suspects,” said Capt Mhlangu, “We value the cooperation that we receive from the farming community. Thank you for being part of our team”
