Friday, 2 November, Sasol Rugby Club kicked off their yearend function with a bang. The night started off with the Annual General Meeting and after that the proverbial ball was passed on for the election of a new committee. With the nominations in and the voting done, the new committee was elected as quickly as a drop goal with all members in agreement of the new committee.
Next the finances were tackled along with the chairman’s report. The last year was no ruck and maul for the club due to good sponsorship and fundraising. In fact, the club was able to kick money back into the community by helping some charities. A member of the club said that they loved to support the local community because when you give back, you not only help others but develop the surrounding communities.
All this was the year-end function’s warm-up before the real match fun started with this year’s prize giving. All the players were excited to hear the whistle blow to signal the kick-off to this part of the event. The best forwards, defenders and players of their respective teams were announced and they were all supported by their teammates, off the field and on, as their names were called. Smile after smile, the gentlemen came forward to receive their trophies and get their picture taken.
2018 was a very successful year for the Sasol Rugby Club. The 2018 team of year was awarded to the Sasol Rugby Club’s 1st team and the Player’s Player of the year award was awarded to H J Neethling. Well done to each player and team and good luck to all for the 2019 season. – Ané Prinsloo
