The Graceland Ryder cup competition was initiated by Lucky Kgatle in 2016. He donated a trophy for the winning team. The Albatrosses were the first team to win the trophy. The Eagles, however, bounced back in 2017 and took away the trophy.
Cold, windy and overcast weather saw about 44 players teeing off in the third annual Graceland Ryder Cup competition. Two teams, the Albatrosses and Eagles, competed over two days for the coveted trophy.
The course was in good nick with the rough fairly short to help speed up play. (Not having to search too long for wayward balls). The greens were hollow-tined and sanded and played slower than usual.
The Eagles, captained by Riaan Burger and playing in red shirts, tried to retain the trophy against the Albatrosses playing in blue shirts and captained by Marthinus Venter.
On Saturday the teams played four ball better ball and at the end of the day the, the Eagles team of Riaan Burger enjoyed a comfortable lead of 15 points to 7 over the Albatrosses of Marthinus Venter. In the evening a prize giving was held where novelty prizes for nearest to the pin on the short holes and the longest drives were handed out, as well as the first twelve placings for the day. Charlene Olivier entertained the players during the prize giving and donated some of her CDs. In contrast to Saturday’s unpleasant weather, sunny open skies and a mild breeze, greeted the players when they teed off in the foursomes round of the competition where players played alternative shots. The foursomes round ended in an 11 all draw. After a halfway house, sponsored by Graceland, the singles matches were played according to handicaps.
The Eagles won the singles matches by 25 points to 9. The overall score came to 51 points to 37 in favour of the Eagles. The Eagles have beaten the Albatrosses 2 years to 1. Riaan Burger took possession of the trophy for the Eagles. Riaan thanked all players of both teams for the spirit in which the competition was played. Visiting players from Walker Park golf club were also thanked for their participation.
