Coach Katlego and Coach Lebo started off as soccer players themselves. After going to trials in eMbalenhle for another team, the idea hit them: there are so many boys in Secunda and neighbouring towns that they knew of, who would love to play soccer, but it was dangerous to play in the streets. Young City Boys’ FC was born right there and then!
The coaches decided to start with U/13 and U/15 teams and see how it went. If they succeeded, they would progress to U/17 and U/19 next year.
The two coaches approached Mr Kgomo, a lawyer from Evander and a neighbour in their street in Ext. 22, who agreed to support the coaches as a sponsor to assist with transport, buying kits and training equipment. The team still has to be registered at a cost of approximately R600.00. The coaches and their teams are frequently hosting fundraisers and sell sweets towards the needs of the team. Recently they bought a new kit for the team from the money raised.
The team is currently selling team t-shirts for the team and supporters. The shirts cost R300.00. The team will make a R25.00 profit off each shirt sold and this money will go directly towards the team. Their aim is to use the money to buy more training equipment.
The Young City Boys FC played a match on Saturday, 15 September, and beat their opponents 4 – 0.
Young City Boys FC is about more than just soccer. The boys learn discipline and the coaches encourage them to dream big and to believe in those dreams. This is a family. – Ané Prinsloo
