The 3rd annual Miss Teen eKasi finals took place at the Johannes Stegmann Theatre in Secunda on Saturday 7 July. This year, the event was introduced as eKasi Pageants, which meant that it was now accommodating different age groups, not just teenagers. Thus, this year introduced two new categories of pageantry: Queen Ambassador and Junior Ambassador.
“Miss Teen eKasi started three years ago when I saw a need to accommodate all the models who were rejected by modelling agencies,” said Thando Kobese, the founder. “Normally, most modelling agencies will be very specific about how they select their models; they don’t want tattoos, body piercings, gold teeth, and they’re specific with the body weight and height.” Because of the requirements, a majority of models who come from townships are not accommodated due to their backgrounds. Miss Teen eKasi was born from the need to include these contenders.
Miss Teen Ekasi ambassador focuses on confidence, public speaking, and community involvement. “We do not select our ambassadors according to their background or area where they come from. The image and beauty do not matter as long as one can enhance and embrace their township,” Kobese explained.
This season gave participants three tasks. They had to approach a sponsor to contribute to the pageant, sell VIP tickets to their family members and sell general tickets to their friends. “The idea was to teach the contestants on how to deal with disappointment and rejection, as well as motivating family members to be involved in their children’s development,” Kobese said.
This year, Sinenhlanhla Skhosana won the title of Miss Teen, Siphosendumiso Masango was crowned the first princess and Reabetswe Komape was the second princess. Lungile Gulube was crowned Miss Plus Teen and Mbalenhle Mthombeni and Betty Ndlovu were the first and second Plus Teens respectively.
In the male categories, Banele Mashaba won The Hunk title, and Karabo Khoza and Fezile Ndlovu took the titles of first and second prince respectively.
The Queen Ambassador title went to Nomfundo Mthethwa, while the Junior Ambassador title was snatched by Natasha Mashaba.
Nobuhle Mthethwa was Miss Congeniality and Thando Radebe was Miss Photogenic.
