Sasol hosted its annual Sports Weekend, beginning Friday 20 April and running through to Sunday 23 April. Featuring school students and senior clubs alike, the weekend brought together a diverse group of teams and individuals to compete in more than 25 sporting events. The illustrious affair was spread out at seven different venues, including Ukhozi Lodge, Secunda Stadium and the various Sasol Community Recreation Centres.
Through its Community and Recreation Centres, Sasol has created a platform for aspirant sports people around Mpumalanga to showcase their talent. The annual sports weekend is an initiative aimed at encouraging its employees and community members to actively participate in sports. The platform is also an opportunity for the talent scouts to identify talent that can be discovered and developed within GMM communities.
The official opening ceremony was held at the Sasol eMbalenhle Community Recreation Centre on Saturday 22 April. Buzzing with excited youth who were entertained by local artists, the opening ceremony was held on a perfectly cooperative sunny day, as was the rest of the weekend.
“Sasol is proud to be associated with this initiative and will continue to be involved with community and sport development in the regions of its operations,” said Ockert Stoop, Senior Manager Real Estate Services, Sasol Secunda Operations. “We support the development of talent in sports as part of our contribution to the national talent pool.”
The different sporting codes were played over three days and the closing and awards
ceremony took place on Sunday 22 April 2018. These include: aerobics, netball, athletics, rope skipping, badminton, rugby, soccer, ballroom dance, basketball and softball. Other codes that were held were bodybuilding, snooker, boxing, karate, chess, table tennis, cricket, tennis, tug of war, funakoshi karate, volleyball, handball, wrestling, JKA karate and judo. Sasol encourages active participation of employees and community members in sports and recreation, since sport has proven to be a catalyst of unifying people in all walks of life and instilling a culture of healthy lifestyles across all age groups. The 2018 Sports Weekend successfully perpetuated this agenda and will continue to do so over the years.
