GMM to face low water pressure?

“It is evident of an ANC led municipality, who can’t deliver adequate service. They can’t properly handle or account for their finances properly. They must swallow their pride and ask the DA to help them because where we govern, proper financial plans and billing systems are always on track,” Marietjie said

GMM residents may face low water pressure if the municipality fails to pay Rand Water R25mil by 28 February.
This according to a media statement issued by Marietjie Fourie, DA councillor.
The municipality must pay Rand Water another R105mil in arrears by the end of the year. According to the statement GMM owes R131.2mil in total.
GMM met with Rand Water on 6 February where they made a proposal to settle all debt by August next year. The rejected proposal can now see a 20% drop in water pressure.
The municipality is planning to present a new repayment plan to council on 27 February. Unfortunately, it seems like they are always planning on making a plan.
According to the media statement the municipality failed, since 2011, to generate revenue to settle the debt in a 30-day period as prescribed by the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). The question is why? Is it a lack of maintenance? Is someone getting free water? Are residents and businesses not paying their debt to the municipality or are we getting robbed by incompetent governing officials?
According to Marietjie’s statement, Mayor Flora Maboa-Boltman fails to implement any working Revenue Enhancement Strategies. “It is evident of an ANC led municipality, who can’t deliver adequate service. They can’t properly handle or account for their finances properly. They must swallow their pride and ask the DA to help them because where we govern, proper financial plans and billing systems are always on track,” Marietjie said. “She must stop blaming the culture of non-payment by residents and businesses as the cause of the municipality’s financial challenges,” she added.
The press release wasn’t welcomed by all in political circles and Aranda Nel-Buitendag, VF Plus councillor, said that the DA is causing unnecessary panic. “Why has the DA not raised their concerns in 2011 when they became aware of the problem,” Aranda asked. “The mayor is trying her level best”, she added.
It is no secret that some Trichardt residents complain every Monday about no water and that we have had terrible maintenance which sees thousands of litres of water going down the drain monthly. What the future holds and if what Marietjie said is the truth, only time will learn. Gwendie Venter
