A new housing scam is going around.
Some residents lost their money when they paid a supposed deposit into an account of a woman claiming to be an agent renting out houses.
According to Anne-Lize Fick, owner of Seeff Secunda, the woman used photos of houses in Secunda and advertised the houses on OLX.
“She told the clients who responded to her advertisement on OLX she does not live in Secunda and they must pay a deposit first so that she can know they are serious about renting,” said Anne-Lize.
Some of these clients paid as much as R5 000 deposit.
“The people then showed up at the houses after paying the deposits and realised it was a scam when the woman did not show up for the appointment.”
When Seeff staff investigated, they found the advertisements on OLX were deleted.
Anne-Lize urged residents who were scammed, to report it to the police.
She said the woman advertised a 4-bedroom house with swimming pool for R5 000 per month.
“If something sounds to good to be true, it is to good to be true,” said Anne-Lize.
