Serial rapist, Sipho Nkosi (29), was given 12 life sentences in Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 14 April.
He was described in court as a sexual predator who reigned as a serial rapist in Delmas and eMbalenhle from 2011 until 2014.
He was eventually arrested in 2013, but raped two more women while out on bail. Although his DNA was positively linked with several rape victims, he was finally caught out when he fell asleep on top of one of his victims in 2013.
He threatened this woman and her boyfriend in Delmas, dragged her into the bushes and raped her in front of her boyfriend.
He also ordered the boyfriend to have sex with the victim.
The boyfriend contacted the police after Nkosi fell asleep on top of the woman.
He was found guilty on 13 counts of rape, three counts of kidnapping, one count of assault, one count of theft and one count of robbery.
All his sentences will run concurrently.
His lawyer argued that Nkosi is still young, has a child to support and needs a second chance.
He also said Nkosi had been shot and the bullet was still lodged in his leg.
He apparently needs an operation to remove it.
Tracey Horak-Keen, prosecutor, however, said Nkosi is a sexual predator and his victims suffered great trauma because he had raped them.
A woman he had raped on 14 September 2011 was pregnant at the time and had a miscarriage because of the rape.
Most of Nkosi’ s victims also suffered from physical gynecological injuries after he had raped them.
He did not care how old his victims were. Two were only 14 and 16 years old respectively at the time.
Men also did not scare Nkosi as one of his victim’s boyfriend was walking with her when Nkosi threatened the boyfriend with a knife and raped the victim.
He continued with his crimes even when he had been caught, committing two rapes while out on bail.
Horak-Keen said the State doubts that Nkosi can be successfully rehabilitated.
“Nkosi had no regard for the law and showed no remorse.”
He raped one of his victims three times and five days later he raped another woman.
The prosecutor finally said society needs to be protected against such horrendous crimes.
