Sasol started transporting a one of a kind, 91 000kg Acid Gas Scrubber Column yesterday from Johannesburg to Secunda.
This column will be part of Sasol’s annual maintenance shutdown in September and the column is expected to reach Secunda by Friday, 5 August.
The column is more than 60m long.
The AK column (as it is also called) was manufactured by Kelvion Thermal Solutions, a producer of pressure vessels and heat exchangers, based in Germiston.
The AK column will replace Sasol’s existing column which has reached the end of its lifespan.
“The new replacement column will be used to safely remove specific gases from the ammonia-rich stream at Sasol Synfuels’ Phenosolvan plant in Secunda,” said Alex Anderson, Head of Group Media Relations at Sasol.
“Sasol Group Technology is overseeing the project.”
He requested motorists to be cautious when travelling on the R554 towards Alberton, the R103 towards Heidelberg, the R550 to Nigel, the R51 to Balfour, the R548 to Devon, the R29 to Leandra and Kinross and the R580 to Secunda between today and Friday.
