The Highveld Ridge SPCA staff members are in shock from the death of their colleague and some of their pets in the fire that destroyed some of the buildings on the SPCA’s premises near Evander early this morning.
According to a source close to the investigation, Bonga Sibiya is the employee who died in the blaze at about 01:00 this morning. It appears that the fire originated from a one plate stove that had not been switched off. Thick smoke woke up Sibusiso, a colleague who shared the living quarters with Bonga. The building was by then already engulfed in flames. Sibusiso apparently found Bonga on the floor and tried to pull him out of the burning building, but was almost torched by the flames. He was eventually forced to flee for his life. He sustained burns to his leg. According to the police, he is severely traumatised.
According to a distraught Jenneth Geel, Senior inspector at the SPCA, three of the personnel’s pets succumbed in the fire, and the entire living quarters, the medical room, stock for the animals, their kitchen and her private vehicle were destroyed.
Jonel Janse van Rensburg, a SPCA committee member, said Sibusiso has nothing left – no clothes, food or furniture. A pile of blankets for the animals, dog jackets, food bowls and pet food was also destroyed.
“Please, DO NOT go to the premises. The place is closed for obvious reasons.”
She asked that any donations be dropped off at Secunda Toyota until 13:00 today. Alternatively, you may deliver donations at the Walker Park Golf Club in Evander. The SPCA’s is hosting a golf day today as they were hoping to raise money for new kennels.
