Hawks arrest policeman

A policeman was arrested by the Hawks of Secunda and members of the Asset Forfeiture Unit in Middelburg on Wednesday, 8 June.
Const Ndondo Amos Phakati, who was stationed in Elukwatini Crime Investigation Services, appeared in the Badplaas Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 9 June, for his alleged involvement in dealing with rhino horn.
This came after five suspects were arrested near Secunda on 5 April for this crime. The culprits were caught when a member of the Hawks acted as a buyer and met with the suspects on the R541.
The two men and three women who were caught, are Dunisani Magagula (41), Moses Piet Mabuza (36), Sibongile Semelane (34), Joyce Ntombi Nkosi (26) and Sonto Catherine Nkosi (42).
They all appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court on 6 April and were granted bail of R2 000 each.
After investigations, the Hawks found that Const Phakati made arrangements with the buyers after the deal was set, collected the suspects and then informed them about a meeting place in Badplaas.
He then used the state vehicle to transport the rhino horn worth R60 000, as well as the suspects.
He received bail of R1 000 and he and the five suspects will appear in court again on Thursday, 28 July for the senior public prosecutor’s decision.
