Locals perform in regional rally

Although national racer Luke Botha and co-driver Barry White took the laurels at the Ralleysport Club Secunda regionals on Saturday, 11 June it was the locals who won the hearts of their spectators.
AC Potgieter and co-driver Tommy du Toit did exceptionally well by winning the S4 class in their VW Polo and landing an overall second place (1:12:18).
They finished a mere three minutes after Botha’s S5 Class Ford Fiesta (1:08:41).
Potgieter and Du Toit are in the overall lead of the Northern Regional Championships.
Four other local teams who left their mark on Saturday’s regional rally was Pieter van der Walt and Johan Smit, Natie Booysen and Rudolf Pretorius, Louis Venter and Janine Lourens and Kosie van der Merwe and Coen van Zyl.
Van der Walt and Smit in their VW Golf came second in the S1 class, finishing 51 seconds after the inners Eddie Simpson and Louis Menge.
The locals finished 11th overall.
Booysen and Pretorius in their Ford Escort took a first place in the S2 Class and a 9th place overall.
Venter and Lourens in their Toyota Tazz came in third in the S4 Class which placed them 5th overall.
Van der Merwe and Van Zyl who shone at the National Secunda Rally on 20 and 21 May, crossed the finished line on Saturday in the 12th place overall.
They participated in the S5 Class with their Subaru Impreza, taking third place in the class.
They finished just more than 17 minutes after overall winners Botha and White.
The ElectroThread team, Chris Coertse and Robbie Coetzee in their Toyota Etios, delivered the most spectacular final spree to the finish line.
Their vehicle hit what appeared to be a rock and overturned just past the end timer of the final stage held at Lake Umuzi.
They did however, still managed to finish the race in an overall fourth place and a third place in the S4 Class.
