A newborn baby boy is now safe, and being kept snug and warm in Evander Hospital’s maternity ward after being dumped in a field on Monday.
A pedestrian passing by the field in Extension 9, eMbalenhle, heard the infant’s cries and upon investigating where the muffled sobs were coming from, discovered the baby wrapped in a dirty duvet cover.
His umbilical cord was still attached.
She immediately took him to a clinic and contacted the police.
It is still unclear how long the infant was exposed to the eliments.
According to Capt Lizzie Koekemoer of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit, the baby had blood on his stomach and washing pegs attached to his umbilical cord.
The police are looking for the baby’s mother.
